  1. When you post the entire contents of the cache description, Google will find it in like, I don't know, 30 microseconds. Cache appears to not just been archived, but retracted? Yeah, reviewers do that sort of thing. I wish they would stop it and just archive the darn thing and lock the page if they want. Now everybody that found the cache has their stats over on project-gc screwed because that cache does not show up and is not counted. Even on Groundspeak the numbers are messed up. I had one like that once. A traditional that was placed to close to an old multi and the final was not listed. Okay, they did that back in the day, so just archive the darn traditional and be done with. No, the listing was redacted. I went crazy for a couple days trying to figure it out. After complaining on the forum about it and having a back and forth with Moun10bike he finally put in archive status. I don't understand what is wrong with just an archive. The reviewer can say some thing like emailed the CO with the problem.
  2. Not only do you have the problem of the land manager associating the hole in the ground with geocachers burying the caches, right after the land manager sees the hole is from a boulder being moved they are going to associate geocaching as causing wanton destruction of the environment by moving boulders around. Not being familiar with the saturation guidelines they no doubt will figure the boulder has been moved to make another hole to bury a cache. Overall a bad idea. Even a pile of sticks is some what nebulous, you are after all disrupting the environment by gathering up the sticks to place over the cache.
  3. I think they already have. Edit: This is why they are called guidelines.
  4. So what is the difference between a user of the free app (which as far as I know cannot be used to hide caches) and a cacher like this one http://www.geocaching.com/profile/?guid=5107cd77-ca9e-462e-ac02-39aee081b7df The result is the same - the cacher cannot be contacted In the case you cited the last logged find was August 13,2013. The last website visit was October 17,2013. The player status is inactive, basically he left the game. Yes, he has active caches out there, but that is about the same as some one joining, playing for a while with a gmail email and then leaving the game to never look at the email account again. Neither one is logging finds. Neither one cares if their caches are in need of maintenance or has a NA log. Adoption is about the only reason to contact them. The intro app user without a valid email is actively finding caches and posting logs. If there is something about the log you wish they would change you can't contact them. Your only option is to delete the log. Or perhaps they did something to the cache, like putting it some where else and you would like to retrieve it. You can't find out.
  5. I believe something sort of like this is already occurring. When people started reporting that they weren't getting the newsletter, it was traced back to Comcast blacklisting some Groundspeak servers for constantly sending emails to addresses that no longer existed, with Groundspeak not heeding the bounce-back emails that resulted. It was around this time that some user accounts that were previously validated started to become unvalidated. It appears that Groundspeak finally started to process bounce-back emails and now unvalidates email addresses if bounce-back emails indicate they no longer exist. Close, but it looks like the server switch is what did it. They did do a lot of trimming of dead wood, but reputation is everything.
  6. There is a difference between the given email address is invalid and the email address simply does not exist. In the cases you cited an email sent to the address would bounce and you know it is not valid. The issue most folks have is the users with an account finding caches that simply don't have any email listed, i.e., an unvalidated user.
  7. That was probably Roy's in Amboy which is about halfway through the route. We stayed at the motel in Ludlow but the pointy roof was probably Roy's. I just looked it up...it was the Ludlow Cafe., I think it has a cache in front of it on some miming equip. I always thought mime's didn't use equipment, just their hands and body... These are California Mime's, there a bit different.
  8. I'm not sure the search function is better when what we have now is "starts with". I remember that not to long ago I could enter "under the bridge" or some other phrase and get a number of choices, most of which were not the start of the name. Given the choice between an accounts page rewrite and a real search function I don't see too many votes being cast for the accounts page. When getting a real search function on the site, instead of relying on Google, is less of a priority than the account page is a mystery I can not figure out. If they want to do some thing to fix the "mess" on the account page they could fix it so that it shows when my membership expires and if I have a auto renew is it for 3 months or a year. I had recent experience with that and I would rather that was fixed than fixing the account page and losing a real useful link. Yeah the functionality can be had in other ways, but why? My solution was to grab a greasy monkey.
  9. That's easy. If you create a bookmark for the "search for nearest caches to my home coordinates," you can adjust the distance parameter easily by adding "&dist=N" at the end of the URL (without the quotes, of course, and substituting the desired number of miles for "N"). If you only care about new caches and events within 10 miles because you ride your bike everywhere, say "&dist=10". If you will drive two hours to attend an event or try for an FTF on a mountain climbing cache, say "&dist=125'. This is one of the basic problems with this site. Some thing that use to be simple and easy now requires a bunch of hacking around to get back a useful feature. To make the site really useful and get useful functionality one needs to learn about greasy monkeys, add block and use a third party software package extensively. I guess that should not be a real complaint, I do, after all, get to learn about things that on a well designed an run site I would not need to know about.
  10. The only thing I had filled out was the state. Apparently the link did not need my street or town. Now in the future when you take all this away, where are you going to get the state for the cache listing? Or will the cache listings no longer have the state? Or will we have a bunch of listings with the state blank?
  11. Unfortunately, you can only buy lifetime maps for the GPSr you installed CN on. If you buy a new GPSr, you have to start all over, buy CN and then the LT update. This is about the only thing I don't like about Garmin--you can buy a Nuvi unit for under $100 and get good street maps and LT maps, but buy one of their handhelds like Dakota/Oregon/Montana for a minimum of $200, and they give you only a crappy base map, and then charge close to $100 for CN and LT maps. I'll stick with OSM. I rather suspect it NavTeq and not Garmin that is driving this. The Garmin topo maps are not locked to a unit.
  12. The functionality is still available on the site: simply go to the advanced search page, select "By Country/State", and then select the country and state of interest to you. You can bookmark the results to have easy access to the same search. As has been mentioned, we are completely overhauling the user profile and this work will be done in a sprint or two. At that time, users will not have mailing address settings listed in their profile anymore, so the link as it existed on the page would become less and less relevant. So how much more do you plan on taking away? It is frustrating having things you used for years removed, seemingly with out any consideration of the user. And mostly as an unpleasant surprise. You guys have no concept of customer service. The multiclick exercise certainly is not a good solution to replace a single click solution.
  13. 1. I'll bet the ones that used the feature had their State/Country properly filled in. I'm sure most of the intro app or c-geo folks don't bother with this detail. 2. Certainly you can figure out the State/County from the home coordinates. A popular 3rd party software does not see this as a problem. 3. Does this work for everyone?
  14. But the real question is why do we need a backup option when there use to be a perfectly good link that did it all in one click?
  15. It's a sarcastic swipe. Several years ago the Google Earth Viewer was removed for "performance reasons". It was stated by Groundspeak that they felt it was not a problem because less than 200 ever used the feature. The yelling and screaming went on for pages and pages. A way to implement it that did not cause performance problems and we got it back.
  16. The new list is gone for me also. (Washington State) This is a real bummer because it was a nice place to find the nearest events. What is in the weekly newsletter for events is sorely lacking. The list of newest is better than the list of nearest because it limits what is shown. Please bring this functionality back! I really don't recall any discussion from users requesting this feature to be removed. So again we are getting something we did not ask for and didn't want in the first place. Edit to add: Yeah okay I can get the list via advanced search. But really, six clicks, a scroll or two to replace one click? Come on Groundspeak, get serious.
  17. It's called a bookmark. Create a bookmark list for needs maintenance and they when an email indicates the cache needs maintenance, click the bookmark item on the navigation on the upper right of the cache page listing. As you fix them, remove them from the list.
  18. Your list does not include the 2015 block party. Don't think there is any ferry involved with that one for you. For me it is a $35 ferry ride. That's Groundspeaks list, it only goes to the end of July. The block party is not a mega, it's a block party. But Going APE is a mega, and it will be held Aug. 16, 2015, an hour's drive from the Block Party. Yah, I know I was just trying to prove jholly wrong:) It isn't on the list yet though and the stats I posted were from the list. Well that is an exercise in futility.

  20. Since you waited so long before you made the announcement don't be surprised if you get a number of finds. 9:30pm the night before just about everyone has the GPS's loaded and nearly no one is looking at the forums.
  21. Wow, that is a big chunk. I bet some of the others along the dirt roads in the area are goners.
  22. Final draft bookmark is up and the final draft data file is on cachemachine.hollenback.org
  23. I removed the list so no one gets the wrong list. I'll have the final up tomorrow.
