  1. Well for hooking it up to the axim I don't believe the usb to serial cable is going to be much help to you. I have some info posted at http://www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/ if you're looking for help connecting up to the axim. quote:Originally posted by topcat:Where can I get the best price for a serial to usb adapter? I want to connect Vista to laptop and or Dell axium If you don't know where you've been.... you will never get to where your going "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  2. You have the option of downloading the whole state in a zip file. Thats how I've been downloading the files I need. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  3. I looked all over the place when trying to figure out how to do this stuff and couldn't find any one definitive source. It took me alot of time to kinda piece it all together and get it working. I'm just happy I've been able to save some times for some like minded folks. Glad to have been of assistance. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  4. Well I think the one you'll want is the navigator version which is 99 bucks. This gets you 1 year of access to download all the maps you need. The maps don't expire so you can download them and burn them to a cd for yourself if you wish which is what I'll be doing before my 1 year is up It seems kinda pricey for software until you use it. i use it everytime I go caching these days. It's nice not having to do the research on mapquest etc to look up driving directions. quote:Originally posted by bigdaveoh:Hey Crash.... Thanks... your right, Mapopolis really runs great ! The demo sold me...$$$, its only money..lol I'm not sure if I understand their progrom tho... It looks like I can buy the maps on CD, which would be outstanding when I travel and an internet connection is not available. So.... I hope thats the case... If you know the CD will provide the same maps as the download...let me know....again...its only money $$$ (wait til my boss....errr...wife...see's this...) Thanks all, Dave,Akron, Ohio "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  5. FYI Amazon has one of the best deals I've seen on a descent pocket pc. It's 199 bux with free shipping which is about as cheap as you'll find a brand new pocketpc. This one runs the new 2003 os as well. Might be worth looking at. I use a toshiba E755 and love it. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00009K7ET/jasondunn-20/002-9922786-1845612 "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  6. Actually if you use mapopolis on your pda running a mac won't hold you back at all. Unlinke the delorme and streets packages you don't need to load the maps via your desktop pc. With mapopolis you download the maps and copy them directly to your pda , no desktop processing needed. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 7. No in the doc only the PDA is powered by the cig adapter. I use rechargeable batteries in my gps and get about a full day of running on each charge so power hasn't really been a concern for me re the gps. If it is for you , you can check out a cable such as this one: http://shop.garmin.com/accessory.jsp?sku=010%2D10268%2D00 This will act a your interface cable and power adapter. Of course you will need either two cigaret lighter plus in your car or a splitter. Hope this helps. quote:Originally posted by JamesJM:This is good info, thanks. Now...with the set-up you describe are BOTH the PDA, (Axim), and GPS (Vista), powered by the cigararette lighter adapter? 8. In my expierence yes 2003 is faster. 2003 was written and enhanced for the xscale procesors unlike 2002. Now as for Delorme I found it to be so slow when intially trying it I quickly gave up. I would suggest checking out mapopolis. It's more expensive but well worth it. They have a demo available to test it out. You owe it to yourself to try it. It blows delorme out of the water. quote:Originally posted by bigdaveoh:Hey Crash and others... I am using the Dell Axim X5 (400mhz) with a CF slot GPS....Delorme Xmap,Navio and CacheDragon software. What I really want to know is...does PC2003 for PDA run faster??? If so...how is Delorem XmapHH....I can tell you it is "grow old" slow on my Dell with PC2002... Any advice greatly appreciated. 9. I prefer hooking up my handheld gps for two reasons. 1. I alread have a nice handheld unit and didn't want to spend the extra money on a cf one. 2. I don't generally walk around the woods with my ppc out. Unless I need a hint ete it is securely clipped to my belt where It's much safer As for PPC and the mac I believe the software was just released to allow you to synch the ppc with a mac. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 10. I have made some updates to my pocketpc caching faq. I have included a bit of info about wm2003 and a bug with gpsview as well as gpx spinner info and thanks to trippy1976 some awesome dell axim info. 11. I've worked with Cheryl over at Mapopolis in the past so she emailed me as well about these sugestions asking for more info. I sent her a sample gpx file from one of my pocket querries and offered to help out in any way I can. These folks just flat rock, I have a feeling they are going to work this feature in for us! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. 12. What you need is a usb host cable like the one here http://www.semsons.com/usbhoscabfor.html In addition you'll need a serial to usb converter. 14. For what it's worth I emailed the author of gpx view and he said he would look at the problem as soon as he got his PDA running 2003. It's still usable on 2003 but it's annoying as heck. I can't wait for a fix! ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 15. It was great to have you along JoeC! Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I wasn't sure I was going to pull it off for the picnic or before my 1yr anv date. It was particuarly special to have had so many of my geo buddies along with me. Thanks for not heckling as I scrambled around for that one! Dad (Lakemaster) hit his 500th yesterday with Davros and I in tow. The cool thing is he did it in the same park only about a qtr mile from where I hit mine. Congrats pop! I hope we have half as much fun on the next 500. ------------------------------------- Hope is the destination that we seek. Love is the road that leads to hope. Courage is the motor that drives us. 20. I happen to have a two person kayak we could use. I've been wanting to go after this one myself. Pherhaps we could meet up at the river and we could all do it. It'd probaly take us a couple trips to allow everyone to get across in the kayak but sounds like fun to me. quote:Originally posted by bigcall:Mogolloyd, See http://nova.mdgps.net/viewtopic.php?t=12, I think there are a few of us trying to get out there. I happened to take White's ferry across the river the other day and noted that it was tantalizingly close. They rent boats there too for about $5 an hour which may be a good way to go. I agree that right now may not be the best time to attempt it given the river conditions. I was thinking of contacting the last finders before setting out though, to get a feel for if the cache was capable of surviving the recent floods. Something hidden. Go and find it. 22. There is quit a lengthy archival note on the cache page. Did you email the approver to address their concerns? If you did , did you reply to the email or use the geoaching wesbite. If you replied to the archival note email they would not have recieved your reply. quote:Originally posted by edscott:Hey!! at least you were given a reason. I got no response at all. 23. I saw you had mentioned a possible different version without the gps stuff. Is this still in the works?
