  1. Just wanted to share my latest project http://www.cachegear.com Branching out from the pocket pc faq Trippy and I worked on I've put up the framework for a new geocaching related site. The idea is to become the brighthand so to speak of geocaching. There's not a whole lot on the site at the moment but we're working on that. In the future I hope to cover recent product news as well as in depth reviews. I could also use a hand from anyone who's interested in helping review various geocaching products etc.. I could really use some help on the palm side of things since I'm a pocket pc guy Still very much a work in progress but stop by and let me know what you think. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  2. I don't know if you already know this or not but the mapopolis folks released a gpx import utlility for us cachers. It's called gpxtomaplet. It allows you to take gpx files and import them sorta like how pushpins work in streets. I have some info on this at www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/ This utlitly makes mapopolis hands down the most useful pda mapping solution for cachers! "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  3. I'm starting to think this one might be worth the trip south! "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  4. I am. Haven't had any problems with it to date running on 2003. I'm running a Toshiba E755 with wm2003. http://www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/ "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  5. It's the fact that the config is done through a txt file that I was listing in the con. It's certainly not the fact that you can customize it For some folks editing a text file to customize the app would be confusing. I personally also found it to be a strong point but my faq was written for a wider audience or varying technical abilities. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  6. Unless I'm mistaken cachedragon doesn't do waypoint management / xfers. I'm looking forward to an expert gps version for the pocket pc. In the meantime I'm using g7toce for waypoint management on my pocket pc. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  7. You may find this helpful. www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/ "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  8. It's on my to-do list now btw I tried to download the pocket pc version and got a file not found error. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  9. FYI I've updated my pocket pc geocaching faq. I've included info on the new mapopolis gpx utility as well as gpxsonar a new cache info app. http://www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/index.htm "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  10. Just wanted to let you guys know I've update my pocket caching faq. I've included info on GPXSonar and gpxtomaplet. BTW I'm still using GpXSonar as my cache page app. I think I'm hooked! http://www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/index.htm "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  11. Well the good news is Mapopolis wrote a special app for cachers to convert gpx files to maplet files. Check it out here http://www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/gpxtomaplet.zip quote:Originally posted by EarlyMorningHours:Geo, Thanks for the reply and the link to this thread. I *really* like just copying my gpx file over instead of the whole conversion process with GPX spinner. This program has already won me over. I am curious as to how much and how far you want GPXSonar to go. Do you plan on having the app converse with GPS units (like for the averaging function we had discussed)? My feature request would be to have exporting of caches to the format Mapopolis uses. As far as I can tell GPS Babel does not support Mapopolis. Just want to say congrats for a job well done and I hope you do continue development. One more thing.. I think this is the first PPC app I've used that utilizes the .NET CF. 12. I have to give it two thumbs up as well. I used to use gpx view and then had to switch to spinner as gpx view didn't support wm2003. I really missed the ease of just copying over my gpx file to the ppc. I have found GpxSonar to be much faster and much closer to watcher in functionality than any of the other ppc utilities. I'll be adding it to my ppc faq shortly. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  13. This is just way cool. Thanks a ton to everyone who made this happen. I hope to get out there someday to see it. I wish I could be there for the placement but I've sent a donation instead (better late than never) "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  14. I used it again today myself I am still impressed. It's so cool to have a software company actually listening to us! I think the 99 bux I spent on mapopolis has to go down as one of my best purchases ever "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  15. BTW I was just catching up on my pda news and found this article which is good news for axim users http://news.com.com/2100-1041_3-5071822.html BTW Mapopolis runs fine on WM2003 however gpxview does not. I switched to spinner once I upgraded. Just something to keep in mind "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  16. FYI I just ordered a bunch of cables from pc-mobile who are mentioned in our faq. I was actually really suprised how fast I got my cables. Took about a week and I had them in my hamd! quote:Originally posted by trippy1976:Yo... check it out http://www.mobileplanet.com/private/mapopolis/product.asp?pdept%5Fid=900102&cat%5Fid=101&cat%5Fname=Pocket+PC+Devices&dept%5Fid=2310&pf%5Fid=MP731384&listing=1 Just need a blue tooth PDA now. And BTW... Mapopolis truly rocks. I would suggest it for anyone. On another note, check out this article by Crashmore and this other schmoe on hooking up Pocket PCs. There is a section on Axims and cables for Axims: http://www.mdgps.net/modules.php?name=pocketcaching P.S. The cable linked to in that article is significantly cheaper than most others. I've been using it happily for a couple of months now. It takes a little longer to arrive from Hong Kong, but it's like $20-$40 cheaper than domestic cables. PPS. You can hook the older ones up too. They sell cables for both the Garmin "E" type (rectangular) and Garmin "R" type (round) connections. -------- trippy1976 - Team KKF2A _Assimilating golf balls - one geocache at a time._ http://www.mi-geocaching.org/ "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  17. I don't see it as inflamatory nor was it meant that way. I do however believe that LuneyTunes original posts were both inflamatory and meant that way. So in my opinion your civility quote is a bit off mark, As i stated "you treat us with some civility when coresponding with us you're alot more likley to get positive results" I don't see any civility in the early posts in this thread. All I see is more Jeremey and gc.com bashing and frankly it's getting old. I was simply stating that if they were that unhappy they should go off and do something about it. Complaining to the forums (as has been demonstrated in the past) does not lead to anything constructive or productive. h quote:Originally posted by Jomarac5: quote: crashmore wrote:Great suggestions now why don't you run off and implement them elsewhere rather than simply complaining here. Aren't you an admin, crashmore? Didn't you, in a post not so long ago say "...you will find that if you treat us with some civility when coresponding with us you're alot more likley to get positive results." Civility is a two way street and your reply here is not very civil. quote: crashmore wrote:If you're so passionate about the direction the sport should take then go do something about it, no one's holding you back. He is doing something about it -- he's expressing his complaint to people here. Perhaps, LooneyTunes' grievances are not well founded, or perhaps they are, but your inflamatory reply and lack of civility does nothing to remedy the situation. It's no wonder that the admins have such a difficult time of it when hostile replies like yours are given by people who represent this site. ***** "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  18. Great suggestions now why don't you run off and implement them elsewhere rather than simply complaining here. If you're so passionate about the direction the sport should take then go do something about it, no one's holding you back. If you just want to use an alternative site, again go for it no one is holding you back. quote:Originally posted by LooneyTunes:Once again, having to jump through hoops to get my latest cache approved. This time, I have to explain why my virtual cache shouldn't be a micro cache. Lat time it just took a week, for no apparent reason. Time before it was too close to the train tracks (they had been removed in the 1970s and were now a bike trail). I, for one, think geocaching.com acts more like microsoft than linux, if you know what I mean. If he is going to keep the data all to himself, make us agree that he owns everything we post (with *two* checkboxes now on every post :-), he should at least buzz off and let us post our caches. In my opinion, though, this data should be open and people should be able to copy, sort and distribute it however they want. Anyone who thinks this is technically unfeasible isn't paying attention. And then there would be no questions of liability, ownership, etc. Best of all, then we could get the data in *useful* formats, not just spread across html pages or in proprietary-formatted attachments to email messages (only 500 at a time, please!). 19. Ok since Cheryl has pretty much told us it's cool to redistribute this you can find the conversion utility here http://www.mdgps.net/pocketcaching/gpxtomaplet.zip I have also included a rough copy of a how to doc for the utility in adobe pdf format. Cheryl and the whole gang over at mapopolis have been ultra cool in delivering this util to the caching community. If any of you guys end up buying the software as a result be sure to let them know you're a geocacher in the process. At this point these folks really do deserve our support! 20. Well you'll be happy on 1 of the 2 points. First it is a gui. It is a very simple and fast gui but it is a gui. 2nd the program does run on the pc and not the pda. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  21. So far this conversion tool just flat rocks. I have a how-to doc for it written up and I sent it off to trippy for proof reading. Once the docs are done I think it'll be readily available. Should be VERY soon. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
  22. The argument that your cache should be approved based on another previously placed and approved cache isn't a valid one. I sorta of compare this to when a retail store mislabels a price. The store typically will sell you the item for that marked price but they fix the problem so others can't continue to take advantage of the mistake. As per the guidelines posted at http://www.geocaching.com/about/guidelines.aspx "Keep in mind that there is no precedent for placing caches. If a cache has been posted in the past and breaks any rules listed below, you are welcome to report it. However, we honor the posting of older caches that came in before the rule was issued." quote:To enforce certain guidelines on one cache and not another that is identical in nature is setting a double standard. If you want to have the same type of caches placed everytime, then you shouldn't have _guidelines_ that say caches "should not", but have _rules_ that say caches "shall not". You could add further clarity that say "caches shall only be placed in an approved rubbermaid or ammo container with official geocaching.com stickers, and can only contain approved geocaching items as listed on the geocaching.com website". I know that's extreme, but it's on the exact opposite end of the scale as your argument. -=Jerry A. 23. You might want to check this out http://pocketpcthoughts.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=639944/prsrt=1/ut=44938dd29d7a582a I seems that you can get a pocket pc for about 150 bux now. I have the Toshiba E755 and love it. "Law pain i reviar mistar aen"
