  1. That's what I saw. I see it's pretty limited. It only has 300 cities in it's database. I'll stick with my Legend. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  2. A Streetpilot III for the cars and a Vista for my pocket. I really want that 24MB in the Vista so that I can store three maps at once. The Streetpilot would be great to have in the car because my wife gets lost easily. She calls me at work when she's lost so that I can walk her through with Yahoo maps. 3. You can't add memory to any etrex units. They don't have a slot for it. A few months ago, they did upgrade the firmware to up the waypoint storage to 1000 from 500. Sure, 500 seems like a lot that is until you start using EasyGPS and Pocket Queries, then it's barely minimum. The upgrade is free from Garmin's web site. 4. I have a Garmin e-trex Legend and I've noticed that when i cache with a friend who has a Magellan Meridian, he has a much better lock under tree cover. We've put the units side-by side and he has a lot more sats locked. However, his does some freaky things sometimes like quickly jump 30-60 miles from our location. That might me more about software algorithms than antennae though. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  5. I just saw an advertisement on TV for a thing called an Auto Map. It seems to be a GPS with aotorouting. It doesn't have a graphic display, rather it has a simple single-line text display and a keypad. The deal is that you punch in where you are going and it'll route you to the destination with text and voice cues. It also has a database of points of interest similar to my Garmin unit so just tell it you want McDonalds and it'll route you there. The amazing thing was that it cost only $40 and that includes a 'free' car vacuum. I wonder how they made it so cheaply, what did they sacrifice? If this thing is reasonably rugged and reliable, it just might be worth giving out to chronically lost people like my wife. Has anyone seen the ads or seen one of the units? 6. In the San Francisco Bay Area, we're doing something similar. There's a project called the Bay Trail that will create trails that will encircle the bay. When it's done, it will be over 400 miles long and will go through 47 cities and 7 counties. About half is done now. Folks will eventually be able to bike or hike completely around the bay and across every toll bridge. Check it out on www.baytrail.com Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  7. Why bother? I can see doing that when NiCads were around. They weren't worth a darn, but with NIMH costs running about $10 per four the make more sense. They get about 80% of the power of new premium alkaline batteries. They won't blow up if you over charge them, they charge in readily available chargers, they don't get memory and they are supposed to be good for 500 cycles. I have some that I've recharged 40-50 times in a one-hour charger which is probably hard on them, but they work just fine. I use these things in lots of devices. All of my small flashlites, by kids' Gameboys, my PDA extender, my tent lights, my motorola radios. I haven't bought a 24 pack of AAs from Costco in nearly a year. 9. The answers are: Yes * They do. They track every web site visited and have made it clear when you can play and where you cannot go while using the office's systems. * Just three minutes left until lunch is over. quote:Originally posted by TEAM 360:I wonder how many people posted to this thread while they are at work? Does your boss know that you are surfing geocaching.com while on the clock? Maybe the supervisor there should install a program to track the websites visited, in order to increase efficiency. 10. It's so nice that we have the Geocaching censors on the job. We certainly wouldn't want children or other succeptable folks accidently viewing such materials. Who knows what they might do, go to church or pray! Well Done Tarindel! July 19 by Tarindel (13 found) Catan, myself, and two guests found this one easily. Think we came up the back way, as we started near the lagoon and came over the top of the hill. I can imagine this area is very pretty in the springtime -- in summer most everything is dead. Definately check out the top of the hill while you are here. TNLN, except for some religious propaganda I removed. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  11. I bought a bottle of it AFTER my last attack from a poison oak vine. I haven't used it yet possibly because I've been aggressive with the poison oak wash after suspected exposure. However, I'll let the group know if I ave to use it. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  12. How did your meeting go? quote:Originally posted by Bilder:First meeting with the parks dept is Wednesday afternoon. 13. I've used Garmin marine units for a long time so it was an easy choice for me. The interface was already familiar when I first picked-up my Legend. The same goes for other Garmin units, I quickly picked-up how to use a friend's Streetpilot III when I used his boat recently. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.

  15. The cache in the San Francisco area came and went before I even got a stab at it. If I could make a suggestion, it would suggest that they either not post coords until the cache is found, using more and more specific clues, or post the coords right up front and make the caches very hard to find. The way that they did it just gave an advantage to those who could sit home and press refresh all day. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  16. The folks that moderate these boards have shown a tremendous amount of tolerance for off-topic posts and even flaming and abuse. I moderate several travel-related boards where I have FAR LESS tolerance for the crap like that which goes on here. If I was the moderator here, I'd be cutting a swath a mile wide with locked topics and deleted posts. I've banned people for less. As far as censorship and free speech goes, get out your copy of the constitution, READ IT. "Congress shall make no law..." read it again, geocaching.com isn't a government board, it's privately owned, you have no free speech rights here. And for censorship, too bad. geocaching.com has the right to lock and delete your posts as they feel fit to advance their business. If you don't like it, you are free to leave. Heck, why don't you start your own board and promise to allow anything to be posted. I've seen s few of those and It's fun to watch and wager when they finally put a set of rules in to curb the nonsense. I "censor" posts all of the time especally the one who promote other competing web sites or travel agents or posts that take issue with the way that I run my boards. The anonymity that gives posters the boldness to say things that they wouldn't say to my face also gives me the boldness to wipe them off of my site. On my board, it my board, and I don't have to take crap from anyone. While I may lose posters from time to time, the ones who behave and stay appreciate me keeping things travel-related and clean. I vote for more deleted posts, more locking and more geocaching-related posts. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  17. I just saw Memento and I was thinking about Geocaching*. If someone has that condition** then they can keep logging the same cache over and over again. Just tattoo the coords on their forearm. he can even legitimately log his own cache hidden in his front yard over and over again. Think of how much gas that would save. * Everything relates back to Geocaching--or the Simpsons--or both. ** The main charachter has a condition where he is unable to create new memories. He can't remember back farther than 10 or 15 minutes. The film scenes are shown in reverse order to give the viewer a similar feeling of being unable to know what events came before. Seinfeld did it, have the Simpson's done it yet? Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  18. That sounds like a great idea. We can post coordinates, agree to meet at a specific time and meet there. Lets call it an Event Cache unless someone is already using that name. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  19. Just to let you know. Good luck. Hint 3: We have two researchers scouting northern California to match the clues with modern-day geography. However, there is a swarm of politicians in the area who are all campaigning for the recall election and it is difficult to complete our research. We'll keep you posted when we hear that they're able to gather more info. Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  20. You bet. The LAST thing that they want is for more people to come to the parks, pay the fees on top of the taxes that they already pay and enjoy the parks! Their main interest is to preserve the parks so that future generations may be denied use of them also. For more information, read the Yosemite master plan. quote:Originally posted by yumitori:Living between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks as I do, I think there's certainly plenty of places within their boundaries where geocaches do not fit, such as in the middle of a geyser basin or among the subalpine vegetation. No responsible geocacher would choose such a hiding spot, you say? Perhaps, but five minutes reading the http://ubbx.Groundspeak.com/6/ubb.x?a=tpc&s=5726007311&f=4016058331&m=61660757 is enough to show that not everyone is responsible, nor can the approvers catch every asinine hide. Sad though it is, our national parks are strapped for money and personnel, and the last thing the rangers need is yet another demand on their limited resources. Since all those responsible geocachers would be asking permission (you would, wouldn't you?), someone will need to go out and confirm that your desired hiding place will be appropriate. You want geocaches in national parks? More power to you. But you better be lobbying for more federal support for the Park Service at the same time. Ron/yumitori --- Remember what the dormouse said... 21. FYI, That post by MARK42 with the big brush mower contains some sort of active link. It tried to put a cookie on my computer from countryhomeproducts.com Mickey Max Entropy More than just a name, a lifestyle.
  22. I just logged a DNF on a micro. I didn't have a clue (figuratively nor literally) or a description so I spent about a half hour looking in an area with lots of nooks and crannies. When I logged the DNF, I made it clear that I was searching blind so that the cache owner wouldn't feel the need to run out and check up on the cache. 23. Plus: I've lost 40 pounds I spend more time with my sons out of the house. I can see muscles in my legs that I didn't know existed. My blood sugar is down about 30 points. I've been to places that I never knew existed though I've lived around here for 40 years. The regional parks around here keep tacking parcel taxes on to my property tax bill without a vote. I used to be very angry about that. Now that I actually use these parks, I'm a little less angry. Minus: I found out that I'm allergic to poison oak. 24. There's not much that you could put into a how-to type geocaching book, it would be more like a pamphlet. I'd like to see a travelogue type book, about a guy who goes geocaching in different areas, or who goes out Geocaching with lots of different groups in different areas and relates their stories. Something in a P.J. O'Rouke style would be terrific. The most fun that you can have Geocaching without actually going out and geocaching is listening to people's stories.
