I'm from the Dallas area and came up to Madison for a government computer contract. I used to do a lot of metal detecting using a Fisher CZ-70 Pro ad never heard of Geocaching until I saw it on the news (made by CommanderUSN) up here in Madison.
Metal detecting was becoming harder because it was being prohibited in more and more places and I was looking for something new. When I saw that news segment, I went out and bought a Garmin 60Csx, logged on to geocacher.com, joined and went out Geocaching.
The Ham license (K2EOK) I originally got back in the 60's as a novice (WN2EOK) in New Jersey, the general exam was taken at the New York FCC field office where you had to tap out the code. I just kept the call sign and changed the address....and eventually upgraded to an Extra class (20 wpm code).
I've been up here for 1/12 years now...no telling when the contract will end...and when I do go back, I have some local Geocachers here ready to adopt the caches...but until then, I'll maintain them. I just try to add to the fun.
