  1. Are the maps even loaded in Basecamp? Normally 3rd party maps come as img files that are simply copied into the Garmin folder.

Most GPSFileDepot maps are not downloaded as IMG maps but rather installed into MapSource/BaseCamp before they can be sent to an external device.

  2. I am trying to use Garmin BaseCamp to install maps from GPSFileDepot but, when I RIGHT click on internal storage it does not give me the option to INSTALL MAPS. If I go to MAPS the INSTALL MAPS is greyed out and I can't select it.

Any ideas on what I need to do or what I'm doing wrong?

Do you have a link to MapInstall in the Garmin directory of your Program Files list?

Or are you using a Mac?

  3. Since we're splitting hairs here, 3 Meters is a lot closer to 10 feet than 7 feet.

    True.

The reason I used this example:

The best I have ever achieved with the Oregon x50 is 3m, or 7ft - which is pretty good.

Is because when my Oregon x50 is reporting EPE of 7ft, and you change the display to metric, 2m is less than 7ft, so the unit displays 3m instead (rounds up).

  4. The only plus I see is Wherigo. Unless, of course, size matters. Some say it doesn't........

I have a Dakota 20 and have thought about the Wherigo function, but can't see spending the extra for it. I do have an app on my phone for it, but haven't taken the trouble to figure out how it works. Being somewhat challenged when it comes to stuff like that, I don't let it worry me.

I was tempted last Black Friday by a really good deal on the Oregon, but refrained as the Jeep needs a new top.

My OPINION is that the Oregon series is constructed of much higher quality components and materials than the Dakota. I have both, and particularly the USB 'flap' and sloppy mechanical power button on the Dakota seem severely poorly executed. Examining both together in person will reveal what I am referring to.

  5. OK, now I am confused:

Today, from GPSFileDepot, I downloaded the Florida Topo map and the Pennsylvania Topo map. I placed the .img filed in the Garmin folder on my micro SD card; these maps read fine. I also downloaded: My Trails High Quality Trail & POI Maps Map, Maryland/DC Topo, West Virginia Topo, and Virginia Topo; these files show on the SD card but do not show on my Montana (Setup--> Map --> Select Map).

I only put the Florida Topo which was 29 tiles and the Pennsylvania Topo which was something like 136, I forgot the exact number, on the micro SD card.

Your quotes do not agree with each other.

You never said you sent the other maps to your uSD card, but you do say they show up on the uSD card, but not in the Map Select Menu.

    Can you please clarify?

  6. Garmin MapInstall. The link you provided is the reference have been using. Right now I am reading through the Montana Wiki as I thought it would be helpful to orient me with the unit. So far so good other than the map issue referenced here. I just can't figure it out.

Can you please run JaVaWa Device Manager and see if any errors are reported?

How many maps are loaded onto your GPS and uSD card, and what is the total number of map tiles when added together? JaVaWa Device Manager will give you all this information. If somehow you have more than 4000 map tiles total between your Montana and uSD card, they will not be available for selection.

  7. Perfect example of misleading and incorrect advise:

Different maps should not be active together, only one map and ALWAYS worldbasemap provided by Garmin on the Montana.

I commonly run multiple maps at the same time on all my Garmin GPS units, without issue, as they are designed to do just that.

I purchased a Garmin Montana 600. Only the Florida and Pennsylvania Topo show up with option to Enable/Disable. What am I missing??? I even deleted the files and started from scratch.

How did you 'place' the *.img files? Did you use BaseCamp, MapSource, or MapInstall?

All the information you need to install maps on your Montana can be found here.

  8. Not using PQ's yet. Still trying to figure how to make them. Tried once, but found "0" caches. Yes, I just recently changed account settings to GPX 1.0.1

Have GSAK, still trying to figure out how to use it. tongue_animated.gif

GSAK has a steeper learning curve than any GPS, but is worth your patience!

    As suggested:

GPX 1.0.1 isn't supported on any GPSr I know of (not Garmin anyway) and can cause issues if loaded.

You can set to get PQ's as 1.0.1 and then use GSAK to send v1.0 to the GPS, with the attributes converted into text on the first log using this macro :)

  9. If you can see the location of your cache in Google Maps, it's fine. Coordinates are coordinates are coordinates.

Do you have a reading disability or something?

Or are you just so special that rules do not apply to you?

If you can not use a GPS to record coordinates for a hide, DO NOT PUBLISH the hide.

    PERIOD.

People like yourself do more damage than good to the geocaching community.

If the coordinates end up working, then it's fine. Also, I am taller than Chuck Norris so rules MAY not apply to me. I'm not sure about that, though.

Your blatant disregard for the Geocaching.com rules/regulations put in place as well as the arrogance you convey astounds me.

Geocaching certainly does not need people like you getting involved and diluting the quality of the 'sport'.

I do not think your statements here are gaining you many friends....

  11. Well to be fair then he can only bring his GPS. No batteries. My iPhone battery is part of the unit so it can come along.

Seems to me, we are defining a very specific set of parameters designed to make the smartphone option fail.

    Never argue with idiots.

They always bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
