  1. It really doesn't matter that much but if it bothers you then you have every right to delete it. Some people have very loose criteria for a successful find, but like someone said earlier it's their loss. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  2. Hey Trippy, I just joined the Yahoo group. Good idea whose time has come. It sounds like a good place for some Michigan specific discussions or threads that we don't want to get buried. For the longest time I didn't think anything could get lost in the Midwest forum but it's finally coming alive. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  3. Getting a bit off topic here, but we need MORE of the challanging caches. As of last fall there were only a handfull of Michigan cachers with over 20 finds and now there are about 50. Tough caches are not the best first choice for newbies and thats who account for most finds. They find 3 or 4 caches and are never heard from again. After you gain experience the caches you remember are the ones that you really had to work for or had unique charachteristics to make them special. I placed a difficult cache last summer that involved solving a puzzle onsite, at first I thought nobody wanted to do it. It had almost no activity compared to a 1/1 cache about .75 miles away. Recently as more and more cachers have passed the newbie stage it is being visited by some that skipped it the first time through. I plan to do a couple very difficult ones this year. I don't know if they will be hunted or not but I enjoy the planning and the people that do go looking appreciate the time taken to create a cache that is unique and challanging. Don&Betty: Don't dispair, place the cache. I have not hunted in the Jackson area yet but when I do, I would definitly try the one you are talking about. I'm sure others will too. Rusty... 4. Unless something changes before I get online tomorrow I will just post it as Saturday. The main intent here is to start communication within the geocache community in Michigan. As with any date chosen there will be people that won't be able to make it. Hopefully those that miss this one can make the next one because if this goes well somebody WILL organize a next one. Michael Michael, glad to see you are still around! I really liked your caches but hadn't seen any sign of you in quite awhile. I plan to get there about 10AM and place a geocache logo on a table. You just need to show up and look for it. I have received a couple of positive replies thru email so I think this thing is a going to work. I'll post an event cache within the next few days so more people can see it. Saturday April 27th, 10:30 AM at the Lansing Mall food court. Does anyone have an opinion of how long it should run? One hour, two hours? I think I should post an ending time. Does anyone think the mall will have a problem with a group of people meeting there? We can always buy some food to set in front of us. 10. quote:Originally posted by Zuckerruebensirup: My suggestion would be to meet on the west side of Lansing. (Maybe at the Lansing Mall food court?) That’s about an hour from both Grand Rapids and Jackson. Also, there are several cachers in the Lansing/East Lansing area as well. Maybe if the get together was nearby, we could interest them as well. That would be fine with me. How about Saturday the 27th around 10:30 AM to beat the lunch crowd. Lets see if we get any other responses. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

I would be game for just about anything but was going with an area that I know. Please go ahead and make a suggestion. One thought is that we could have more than one get together over a couple weekends. Take your pick, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Jackson, Lansing, Detroit. If at least one person from each get together could go to one of the others we could get some continuity of communication across the state. I'm willing to organize one and participate in a couple. Any other takers out there? All you need to do is choose a location with available seating. Set a time span of about one hour, go a little early and place a geocaching logo on your table, wait for people to show up. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  14. I like the word Web-ling used "cyberphobic". My wife Libby has went on all but 1 or our 66 finds and helped with all the hides but she is definitely cyberphobic so she doesn't get on the forums...yet! Our hunts are totally mutual, Libby usually runs the gps while I drive to the sites (could probably skip this step with a little more research up front but how much fun would that be). Once on the actual hunt we share duties, she is usually better at finding the final nesting spots. I'm thinking about changing our user name to Rusty&Libby to reflect the team aspect. It is great to see so many female cachers, the endearing title "geek" is not just for men anymore Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  15. I have seen a few failed attempts at getting people together here in Michigan and I think it is time to get proactive. Maybe the earlier ideas were too big and we need something on a smaller scale to start with. I would like to meet some other area cachers over coffee or lunch at a fast food joint or maybe the food court at a mall. I think something in 28th st area on the SE side of GR would be local to many of you. Preliminarily I would like to do it around the end of April. Who would come? Let me hear from you, also accepting suggestions on location or date, but I WILL set something up and if Libby and I are the only one that show then we will eat alone Besides putting faces with names there are some other things meeting might accomplish. It could be the beginning of a real summer get-together, we could discuss the rumblings about a Michigan Organization, talk about how to increase the variety of caches in the area, talk about the WZZM 13 news report about geocaching, we could even talk about the crappy weather. Lets hear from you West Michigan and any others that would be interested !!! Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  17. TC is too far out of the action for most of the state so participation would be a problem. Plus I really don't see a reason why an organization would need to be "based" anywhere in particular. I'm over near Grand Rapids and I think we need some local get togethers before any kind of state organization is created. The picnic idea in Detroit didn't pan out so how about just meeting over coffee or lunch in different parts of the state. If we had a few meetings this spring perhaps then we could take the next step and have some larger gatherings in the summer. Eventually statewide or regional organizations might be created from a consensus of several cachers. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  18. There is a spot in northern Michigan where a tree is full of shoes! There are at least 100 pairs shoes mostly with laces tied and hanging from branches of this tree. It is trash but at some point it became sort of an art expression or at least an oddity. This one is a local landmark and people go looking for it. I could see making something like that a virtual cache location but would not encourage adding to it. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page
  19. quote:Originally posted by Technician: From the pictures it looks like this made for night cache maybe impossibe to find in the daytime. It uses hidden reflectors. They stand out at night under a flashlight, but are very hard to spot in the daytime. Check it out. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=9649 Tell me what you think. It is about a half mile walk to get to it. Trails split and go everywhere. Daytimers would have no idea if they are on the right track, have gone too far etc. Gotta find that last marker to find the cache. Anybody wanting to copy the ideas write to the cache owner (me). I may put together a set of how to photos showing some more of the actual marks used including the materials needed that could be e-mailed to persons interested in placing a night time only cache. It may take a while for me to reply as I am on the road quite a bit. Be patient, I do answer my mail. That looks like a very cool cache, why is it archived after only a few days? Is there a problem people need to be aware of before they try something like it? Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

The total count is a measure of my personal successes and an indication of my effort and for that reason, I enjoy seeing it go up. There may be a small element of competition (one day I will have a count that rivals CCCooper or Stayfloppy), but over all the # is for me to measure myself, not for others. I voted for the middle one also for almost the exact same reasons. Find counts are a bit subjective and reflect both how many caches are available to you and what you personally choose to count as a find. Results may vary. Rusty... Rusty & Libby's Geocache Page

  23. quote:How about a BookCrossing book icon, like a travel bug that links to the actual bookcrossing.com book entry? I had never heard of bookcrossing.com before. My wife likes to leave paperbacks in caches we find, I guess we should start logging them and see what happens. Any other things like this out there to add to the list? Rusty...
