  1. Yes, it can be done. The question is will they do it? Generally the mapping software is sold along with the unit it's installed on. A call to Garmin might be in order, but don't get your hopes up.
  2. You said the magic word. "Mac". If you are using a mac and delete the caches you will have to empty the trash in order to dump the hidden .caches file. Be sure to empty the trash before you disconnect and then everything should be back to normal.
  3. Ditto! I use the handlebar mount for my 60CSx and it works like a charm. I loop the wrist strap around the bar just in case it gets bounced loose. Prevents a nasty trip to the ground or worse yet, the blacktop...
  4. I really don't think it makes any difference as long as it turns at least 720 degrees in one direction while being held level.
  5. I want to concentrate on getting my Colorado working correctly before visiting any other states. Maybe when the California is released I'll consider it. With 50 states, Garmin has it's work cut out for them. Next will probably be a gPhone to compete with the iPhone...
  6. I turned on that feature on my Colorado 300 about 30 hours ago. When I enabled it, my unit was right at the border between 2 & 3 full green bars. I just checked my unit and it is still a solid 2 full green bars, and I used my GPSr a few short times off the external power, so I would say that the drain is rather minor. I have a 400t and my pressure trending works great. Looks like a hot clear day tomorrow. Now if we can just get those fires out...
  7. I would certainly give them a call and ask to speak to a supervisor. They seem to have some strange work habits. They lost one of my returns and refused to replace it until I spoke to a supervisor and strangely enough they found the lost one and my check about a week later. All told I've had to replace 4 of them and twice they sent me the wrong replacement. The shields are great, but the service sucks
  8. I haven't noticed the problem, but then again I haven't used them that much. I'm getting better than 12 hours from my NiMh rechargables. There is no logical reason that lithiums shouldn't work unless Garmin's lithium profile is incorrect and shutting them down prematurely. Could it be that you have some bad lithiums?
  9. No they do not charge in the GPS. I'd suggest purchasing a combination charger/conditioner if you don't already have one. NiMh batteries really need to be conditioned in order to get the maximum efficiency from them. I have (4) 2650 MAH batteries that I rotate in my 400t and I'm able to get about 14 to 18 hours out of them. (without backlight or compass). That's better than twice what I got before they were fully conditioned.
  10. If you have tree cover or even cloud cover that's pretty normal. I wouldn't worry about it.
  11. My 400t has 3.81GB of total RAM. I have 1.07GB free with everything loaded. Includes TOPO and about 600 waypoints. Firmware 2.54 Ser# 18Z018xxx
  12. That does give you the "user visible" internal memory which is about all we have to compare. One would assume that the actual internal memory of the CO is larger and Garmin shaves off a piece for their code image, data space, low level loaders, etc. My guess is that the the newer units have 3GB and the older units had 4GB. rwsmith123 informed me that some of the Nuvis actually have two flash memory devices. I was surprised by this but if the CO uses a similar design it would seem maybe they've gone from 2x2GB flash devices in the first devices to a 2GB + 1GB device configuration in the newer units. Probably takes $5 off the cost of the unit. How's that for WA speculation!? GO$Rs My 400t has 3.81GB of total RAM. I have 1.07GB free with everything loaded. Includes TOPO and about 600 waypoints. Firmware 2.54 Ser# 18Z018xxx Yea well one thing you don't need to speculate it the available memory on the new 400t is only 148mb not 1.08gb like the first run of 400t's.
  13. Same here. I tried it several time with the same result. Yep! Here too...
  14. You shouldn't need the backlight to read the display in the daylight. I never use mine except at night, it's clear and sharp as a tack.
  15. The TOPO that came on your 400t can't be installed on your computer in Trip & Waypoint manager. You will need to get the DVD version of the TOPO in order to install it. It's a real pain, but that's the only solution that I know of. The basic Trip & Waypoint Manager map is general in nature and has very limited information...
  16. I'd suggest you go here. http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/ That will answer 99% of your questions...
  17. Yes! It will. I've never had a problem with either my Colorado or my 60CSx. Actually I'm starting to prefer the Colorado over the 60 for geocaching. I've found it to be very accurate and those cache descriptions, hints and past logs are sure nice to have. The Colorado is still experiencing growing pains, but hopefully most of those will be corrected with a firmware update. Way past due, however...
  18. Did you look in the battery compartment? Yep. I found on one site (I think Garmin!) that the eTrex does not have a serial number, but rather a unit ID, but I'm not sure that's going to help me when trying to purchase the 2009 map updater. I guess I'll just update my nuvi and forget the eTrex. Or, I have the option to call Garmin tomorrow. Yee ha. Bummer. Sally I'm pretty sure that the unit ID# is the serial...
  19. I second that... I carry mine in a ziplok bag even in heavy fog. I got fluid in the battery compartment just spraying the display to put the screen protector on. I'd hate to see what happened if I ever dropped it in the water...
  20. Try searching for it by name or GC number. It may be out of range if it's quite a distance away.
  21. Only if you get the SD version. If you get the DVD you can load it into Mapsource.
  22. You shouldn't need any maps for the elevation. After the almanac had built you should be able to get the correct elevation if you're receiving enough sats for 3D. The 400t has the TOPO built in, but you really don't even need that for the elevation... I just noticed that you mentioned "in Mapsource". I probably didn't answer your question. The elevation will be shown on the GPS and not in Mapsource that I know of...
  23. Yep! I've had that problem as well. It seems like sometimes it takes about three kick starts to get it going. Just growing pains, I guess!
  24. 1. I use both a 2GB and a 4GB. Each has different map sets. I have had no problems with either one. I have heard of people using the 8GB, but I've not tried one. 2. I'm a Mac user as well and have used both. Not much difference except the NT is compressed and takes up less space on the media. 3. For city caching I personally use the street maps. They are much more accurate. I only use the TOPO when hiking or doing off road stuff! Hope that helps....
