  1. I wouldn't recommend a Colorado for use around water. Look for something that is water resistant and floats. I use the 60csx, it's fairly water resistant but it doesn't float. I'm sure someone will jump right in with a suggestion. Just stay away from the Colorado...
  2. I'd add to that a rebuild of the almanac. It's pretty easy to do. After the reset just let it sit out with a clear view of the sky for about a half hour. That has helped me in the past.
  3. I've have good luck with my latest Colorado, but do agree that the 60CSx is probably the better choice. I have both and the 60CSx is more dependable, waterproof and cheaper.

  5. I'm sure it's just an oversight. It'll probably be back soon. In the meantime check, http://www.smittyware.com/palm/cachemate/
  6. I haven't experienced it, but it's more than likely one of the growing pains associated with developing a new interface. I'm sure it will be corrected soon.
  7. You can't add it to the preloaded card and you can't modify the file already there. You can load it into system memory, but not the card. I'd suggest locking the SD card so it can't be written to. What I have done is rename the existing map and then load the new map if there is room. I wouldn't suggest it though. It does work as a temporary workaround, but you can't use both maps at the same time. Hope that makes sense to you...
  8. Every shield I've had has either been too long or too short. I've had 4 of them. They do say that they have one that fits, but you couldn't prove it by me. Just get used to removing the batteries, you'll be doing a lot of it. The tide tables are at the bottom end of the Where To? menu, just above the Geographic Points. You still just get one days worth. Temp is not air temp but processor temp. It will always be hotter than ambient.
  9. MM, What do you use for a POI editor? I have made a POI of my found caches and it lists them by GC number. I'd like to edit them and add additional information. Mainly the cache name in place of the GC number. Additional information would be nice as well, but that's the main concern. Ron...
  10. I'll check back with you in a couple of weeks and see how you feel about it then! I've had a love, hate relationship with all four of mine. I'm running in hate mode at the present. Number four just came up bricked...
  11. And as if that's not enough of a project, he's taken on the Oregon as well. Scott, you are the man to be admired. Where do you find the time? Has Garmin made you an offer you can't refuse? After trying to wade through their manuals they sure could use your services.
  12. Friendly notes are always appreciated. It's a good way to leave additional hints or show your appreciation for someone fixing a broken container, replacing a wet log and hundreds of other things. Negative comments should never be published publicly. You can always send a private PM. Thanks for asking...
  13. I have worked in a large outdoor outfitter here in Western North Carolina as their "GPS Guy now for 22 years and have sold Garmin GPS units since the old 38's. It has always been my experience that a helix or quadrifillar, would consistantly pick up better in difficult situations such as we have right here (heavy canopy in summer and the topography year around. I saw a marked improvement and somewhat of a leveling of the playing field when the SIRF Star 3 processors came out in the 60's three or four years ago, but I still find the helixs to be the overall winners. Granted the quad helix is generally considered a superior antenna but it is costlier. Cutting manufacturing costs is the name of the game these days.
  14. I've got everything backup up on my computer but the problem is the Colorado won't connect via the USB port. All I get is the "SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING". I just got off the phone with Garmin and they are replacing the unit for me.
  15. I updated my Colorado 400t to v2.60 from v2.54 last night. Everything looked like it was working correctly after the update, but this morning was a different story. On starting up this morning I got the "SYSTEM SOFTWARE MISSING" message. To the best of my knowledge there is no workaround. Neither soft nor hard resets have any effect and it's impossible to access the internal memory through the USB port. I'd strongly suggest NOT upgrading to v2.60 until you're sure it's not flawed....
  16. Yes. but it's a pain. You will need to use auto mode and pick the cache as the go to location. When you get to your cache location you will need to switch back in geocaching mode. Hopefully this will be corrected so. It helps if you add change profile to both profiles.
  17. One thing I did notice is that the tide tables are no longer there. At least I can't find them. Also I noticed that the hint does not seem to come back. It may work with new caches. I tried it on some of the older ones and it doesn't work. My mistake, the tide tables are still there. You can still only get them for the present day.
  18. I have installed the update, but have not tried it out yet. I'll let you know what I find... Quite a bit seems the same as v2.54, but there have been a few changes such as trackback etc. It's going to take a while to check them all out, but the big thing is it hasn't locked up or crashed yet...
  19. Following the line is great as long as the line takes you where you want to go. You really don't need any maps for geocaching. They sure do help though.....
  20. I'd look seriously at the Garmin GPSMAP-60CSx unless you have something against Garmin. I've had mine for several years and love it. I also have a Colorado 400t. The 60CSx is much more dependable and more water resistant. Yes, I use a Mac...
  21. You colorado is under a year old. They have to fix the unit regardless of what happened to it. It does carry a IPX 7 rating and make sure you mention that and then ask to talk to a supervisor if they don't budge. Actually, that's not completely true. Customer misuse will void your warranty no matter how old the unit is. Water damage is considered as misuse by the manufacturer. Granted it's supposed to be water resistant but the final determination is at the discretion of the manufacture. I'd send it to them and let them make the determination prior to taking any other action. They will probably take care of it. Just my 2 cents...
  22. Garmin is aware of the problem and should replace the unit for you. Mine got moisture in the battery compartment just spraying the liquid used to install an invisible shield. I managed to clean it out and there was no damage to the unit. I did talk to Garmin about the problem and was told to make sure the case was closed tightly. As previously stated the Colorado is rated IPX7 and definitely isn't. I carry mine in a ziplok bag anywhere around water, that means even light rain or heavy fog. I'd be interested in seeing how they resolved this problem in the Oregon, if they actually did....
  23. Yes, Using MapSource. All maps have to be loaded into the same file... I don't think it can be done the way you explain it. If both are on DVD then it's easily accomplished.
  24. Just too much time with the team on that stool I'd suspect!!!
