rhino 530hx won't download cahes
RonFisk replied to theseekers4's topic in GPS technology and devices
Are you downloading directly from GC.com? Have you tried using GSAK? Are you sure your USB cable is OK? I had a problem in the past that was caused by a faulty USB port. -
rhino 530hx won't download cahes
RonFisk replied to theseekers4's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'll bet they are all there. Try searching for one of the caches by name. They are probably too distant to show up. When you get to New Orleans they will show up normally. Good luck and have fun. Ron... -
The Oregon is the only unit I'm aware of that has a touch screen. If it's an Oregon, it should still be in warranty, I'd check with Garmin. Good luck...

HELP PLZ! Entering coodinates manually Garmin Colorado 400t
RonFisk replied to jm+4's topic in GPS technology and devices
The easiest way to do it is to mark the spot where you presently are by pressing the center button. That will pick a new waypoint. Edit that waypoint and enter the coordinates for the next step in the multi. Then tell it to go to that location. You can't edit the cache page in the Colorado or Oregon. Hope that helps. You can also go here: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/Waypoints -
snip: I would suggest you call Garmin's customer service, explain what happened, and ask nicely if they wouldn't be opposed to giving you another lock code. Especially if you reported the theft to police and have a case number to prove it, they might be willing to give you another code. I know other people on this board have reported calling Garmin in similar situations and by politely asking, have had good luck getting a resolution so they didn't have to buy the same software twice. It's the first thing I'd try. BlueDamsel When I lost my Quest and replaced it with another unit Garmin Tech support provided me with another unlock code for my new one. That was two years ago and I've never had any problems...

I'm an old man and find a pencil & paper much easier to use than a computer. I have learned to use a GPS to find caches and prefer that to a map and compass. I've even managed to learn GSAK and love it...

My Google Earth Five crashes constantly whenever I try to use the Geocaching KML feature. I'm running it under XP. I'm still using GE 4 Plus on my Macs without any problems. I haven't tried 5 on the Macs yet. Hopefully they will fix that problem in the next update of GE, It is still in beta.

I've owned five. Don't forget me.....

Wireless sharing only transfers as a waypoint. No description or hints.

If you upload a GPX file and there are any hints, they transfer automatically. They will show up under description:hints.

Do we expect Colorado updates to follow Oregon?
RonFisk replied to kezlu's topic in GPS technology and devices
(Off topic; I have read many threads comparing units) Just curious what you like about the CO better than the OR. Thanks Two of the main reasons have to do with the display. I don't like the touch screen and to me it's not as bright and clear. Several of my buddies have Oregons and theirs seem to crash or lock up more often. I just don't have that problem with my Colorado. -
Do we expect Colorado updates to follow Oregon?
RonFisk replied to kezlu's topic in GPS technology and devices
I would certainly hope that they would continue to support and update the Colorado. I'm not holding my breath though. I've had mine replaced four times and I'm on number five now. I finally have one that works. I like it much better than the Oregon for quite a few reasons. Sure, I'd like to see more refinements, but it's working great now. I'd really like to see them add the ability to edit the cache pages though... -
Problems with Colorado 400t
RonFisk replied to cache_twenty_two's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have both and actually prefer the 400t for caching. The 60CSx is a great unit as well, but the Colorado is better for geocaching -- In my opinion, that is. I'd definitely take the Colorado over the 60CSx for caching. But I'll still keep both. As a matter of fact I generally carry both when in the wilderness. I also carry plenty of batteries.... -
Thanks for your reply. I basically want it to keep track of the members of our party who probably will be less than a half mile apart but out of sight on the trail. Yelling would probably do the job, but that's not really practical. I agree $85.00 for a five year license is robbery. I remember when they were about $5.00. By this time next year they will more than likely be well over $100.00.

Colorado 400T and number of geocaches
RonFisk replied to Jeep'n Dave's topic in GPS technology and devices
If you're doing PQ's it will hold 2000. I'm not sure how many individual caches you can squeeze in. Check here: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/ -
I'm looking for a 5 Watt, 22 channel unit that can use AA batteries. I have a Colorado 400t and a GPSMAP 60CSx so I use plenty of rechargeable batteries.

I'm looking to purchase a set of good FRS/GMRS radios for group geocaching. Mine are old and outdated and I'd also like to have weather and hazard alerts. I'd appreciate any suggestions or direct me to the appropriate forum. Thanks, Ron...

Using nuvi 500 and GSAK and no geocache descriptions?
RonFisk replied to weylan's topic in GPS technology and devices
Waypoint Name MUST be %code or the field note feature will not work. Is that unique to the Nuvi's? I've used %smart=xx with no problems with my Colorado 400t. My field notes work fine. -
I carry mine anywhere available. Generally I carry it in my hand or on my belt. I've also clipped it to the shoulder strap of my backpack. I guess I should say I generally carry two. One is a 60CSx which I carry in my backpack or fanny pack, but it's my backup and turned off so it doesn't matter much. The other is a Colorado 400t which is my main unit. I also carry plenty of rechargeable batteries, the Colorado needs them for extended trips. I haven't had any problem with either losing a fix.

I've used at least 10 of them over the years and have been very happy. Be sure to follow the instructions and you won't get bubbles. Make sure it's real wet when you apply it so it slides around easily. The shield is designed to be about 1mm undersized so that the bubbles will squeegee out. The small bubbles will disappear after a couple of days.

I see you have a new GPS unit. Be sure you allow it to build your almanac. This is done by setting your unit out with a clear view of the sky for about 20 to 30 minutes. This is extremely important for a new unit. See: http://garmincolorado.wikispaces.com/

GPS used for taxing the miles we drive
RonFisk replied to Bite_Me's topic in GPS technology and devices
That wouldn't surprise me at all. I hear that they are even considering a program where you will pay quarterly for your estimated mileage. Much like a 1040-ES... -
Garmin 400t - PC Connection Anomaly
RonFisk replied to 2Wheel'in's topic in GPS technology and devices
I'm a Mac guy and don't have that problem. It seems to me that your PC thinks that the 400t is a DVD and is trying to play it. That's probably a setting on your computer and not a GPS problem. -
Error opening "current.gpx" on Oregon 400T
RonFisk replied to Pat in Louisiana's topic in GPS technology and devices
There is nothing you need in the current.gpx file. It's for export only. I'd just delete it and let it rebuild. -
That's not quite true. In addition to the pre programmed map I also have photos and logs. I have also found that you can make a copy of the map on the card and reinstall it on the same card if it gets corrupted. You just have to copy it back to the same card. The copy protection is on the card and map both. They have to be used together in order to work.
