  1. That has nothing to do with Magellan support. I do believe that they have good equipment, it is the less than exemplary tactics that have finally driven me away from them. As you said, it took a month for you to get a refurbished unit sent back to you as a replacement for the one you sent them. What did they expect you to do for the month without your unit? Not everyone has a spare GPSr laying around waiting to be pressed into duty. I sent my eXplorist in for warantee repair twice. Each time I was without it for a month. The latest straw was when I sent my eXplorist600 in for repair for the third time. It was out of warantee and they told me it would cost me $56. I was OK with that. But instead of charging me $56, they charged my credit card $181. That was three months ago and I still have not received a credit yet.
  2. I'm just trying to send a message to another geocacher.
  3. Assuming that you have connected the GPS correctly, you just need to Export to Magellen eXplorist and SD card. You can get to that option through GPS pulldown. Make sure Required Format is set to eXplorist geocaches.
  4. OK, so now follow the other steps and let me know where you are having trouble.
  5. I have MapSend TOPO USA v1.0 and it only accepts .WPT.... But, if you go download MapSend Lite, you can load .GPX files and it's really cool.
  6. I do believe what you have done is correct as far as you have gotten. I suspect the files are actually there. The gps will only identify to one geocaching file [and one POI file] at a time. You need to go into Menu, Preferences, Active Setup to select which Geocaches file. To test whether all your files made it to the GPS, do this.... GOTO, geocache pts, position. Instead of choosing a cache on the list, look for Up One Level and click on that. The gps will then show you all the files you sent to it. Just select the one you want.
  7. It looks like you are going to have to spend a few bucks to make life easier. First, purchase a premium membership if you haven't already. Then create a pocket query. When the resultant file shows up in your in-box, just save the zip file somewhere and do a full extract. Pay attention to where it goes. Next load MapSend Lite. It does indeed do geocaches. It's actually pretty cool. Then do File, Open, the name of the extraced gpx file. It will load them into the progream and show you all kinds of stuff relating to it. Then you just click on GPS, Geocaching, Save to File. Select the eXplorist and up they go! Good luck!
  8. I agree... it is about the icons. I think the quest idea is a good one. I have thought about putting out a series of caches from one end (bottom) of the state to the other (top), but have given up on the idea because there wouldn't be enough cachers determined enough to go for the one smiley, even if they received smileys for each individual leg of the quest.... Now, if it garnered them a QUEST ICON, I bet they would go for it.
  9. You need to create a pocket query. To do this, you need to be a Premium Member. Save the zip file that is emailed to you, and extract the .gpx file, or directly load the zip file into GSAK. At this point, it is necessary to know which gps device you are using. If explorist series, either directly export from GSAK to eXplorist, or use Magellan Manager to convert the file and send to the GPS. If you have an earlier model of Magellan, you can send waypoints to it through GSAK, or load them directly through Topo without conversion. As you can see, there are multiple ways to do it. The questions are... Are you a Premium member, which model GPS do you own, and what software do you own? From there we can give you actual detailed steps if you need them.
  10. I gave up and got a gmail account.
  11. I just got off the phone with Charter tech support. I ran some PQs while on the phone with them and none of them went through, even though the PQs ran. They said that they cannot do anything unless they have the "bounceback message." I mentioned about the reprovisioning and he said I was provisioned fine. BTW, they said that they have not had anyone call "Leads" with this issue. There is no call history of any problems with people not getting all mail from geocaching.com
  12. Reading the OPs log, I wondered if he/she had sent a nicely worded email to the cache hider suggesting to him/her that it was considered bad form to get a smiley for finding caches that they actually hid. I've done that in the past and in all cases the hider was not aware it was considered a faux pas. I would suggest that the OP send the message and then FUGGEDABOUDIT!
  13. I was finally able to get a PQ through to the Yahoo email address yesterday. I don't know why I didn't get one earlier through that account. At any rate, this morning I received my normal 500 cache local query at my charter email addy. Strange, strange indeed. So, now I'm no closer to understanding whether it is a GC problem or a Charter problem. Anyone else able to help clarify?
  14. I'm having the same problem. I also have Charter and get my mail through Outlook. I seem to NOT get the big queries.... I get the small ones (100 caches) fine, but my 500 cache/200 mile PQs get lost in etherland. <Update> It appears that today I am not receiving any of the PQs... not even the small ones. <Update.. one more time> I created an email address through yahoo and then created another PQ. The PQ ran, but I received no email at Yahoo. I suspect that there may be an issue at GC... Can anyone else veirfy?
  15. Call 800-707-9971. You can reach technical support for Magellan® consumer products toll-free within the U.S., Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. P.S.T/P.D.T. They have outsourced their level one support, but you will quickly be serviced. They will give you an RMA number. It's funny you mentioned that you had a pin break off. I just got a replacement unit because the diddly stick broke off. I have an eXplorist 600. I love it, but IMHO, the keypad is just too delicate for hard use in the field.
  16. I use a Z-22. Currently I have more than 3000 caches in it along with a ton of other stuff and have only used 50% of available memory. I think it is perfect for geocaching. I also have the air case. It has come in handy more than one or twice.
  17. It happened to me at about 10 months. I pulled the washer and it worked for a little while longer. The best thing to do is to buy a mount for it to click into. Don't need to screw the unit in.
  18. First of all, I would call their 800 number technical support. Normally the wait is only a few minutes. They will give you an RA number over the phone. It will take 3-4 weeks for them to turn the unit around for you. Did you purchase any maps for it. By that I mean... did you purchase MapSend DirectRoute or TOPO USA. Those are the only two detail maps that you can use with the unit. Are you saying that you don't even see a base map? Try this: Press MENU... Preferences.... Active Setup.... check to see that you have a basemap. If you purchased a detail map, this is also where you define it in the setup. Good luck.
  19. It looks like I said the same thing as Embra.... duh, sorry.
  20. I suggest that you check your default folders. There is a good chance that you saved your caches to the memory card from GSAK and the GPS is defaulting to look in the internal memory location. Just a SWAG! I could be way off base.
  21. I found that the people I spoke with and / or emailed were very nice, especially since they knew I was totally irate. But that's where the good service ends... to me it is all lip service. I only had good experience with tech support and my STP... in fact, that is why I purchased another Magellan. Conversely, I've only had terrible support with my eXplorist600. It has been in for repair three times. Each time, I was without an operational unit for a month. I got the unit back within three weeks, but they always left something out... like the battery or replacement cable for charging the unit. I WILL NEVER purchase another Magellan GPS and I will never purchase another GPS that requires batteries that cannot be commonly replaced.
  22. Actually, I'm surprised that the customer service person has sent you anything. In all cases, I've been required to send the GPS and cable back to them for testing, even when I knew that the cable was at fault.
  23. I had removed the washer before. It then proceeded to strip some more.
  24. Sounds like you got your batteries from one of those discount places. My wife purchased an 8-pak of "high performance Power (2850mAh)" batteries for $1.99 for her Magellan STP. The batteries went from full charge to totally dead within 3 hours.
  25. I agree with Embra. The inside threads on my eX600 stripped as well. The screw was just too short to reach the good threads... but if you removed the screw and inserted it into the unit, the screw threaded properly.... Since the screw didn't get shorter, it appears that the threads had worn. I purchased the windshield mount and highly recommend it. I also recommend sending the unit in for repair if it is still under warranty. Magellan needs to be brought to task for their poor engineering of the data/power hookup.
