  1. Don't have any pictures, so this will be invalid for the cointest, I wish I did. See all my stuff is in a warehouse in Virginia, while I look for a house in Texas. Once I find one, I can have Uncle Sam deliver my stuff, and then I will have pictures. I felt like sharing my story anyway. I met my (ex)wife in 1987 Karlsruhe Germany, I went out to the club with a bunch of fellow Soldiers, drinking, listening to music, dancing (welll if you could call it that). The dance floor was really crowded and a girls glasses got knocked off her face (wasn't me). I picked up the glasses, gave them back to her, and went on about my business. About two weeks later, same bunch of guys, same club, same attempts at dancing with one minor difference. I was feeling a bit randy that night and decided that I would kiss the first girl that danced more than two dances with me. So I did. You guessed it, it was the same girl whose glasses I picked up off the dance floor previously. After spending the rest of the evening at the club with her, I got her address. I then left on a training exercise for three weeks. Training mission ended, we returned to base, and I went to her house to see if she remembered me. You must understand, I had been in Germany for a little over a year, didn't speak the language very well, and she didn't speak English very well. Needless to say, in 1989 we were married. Our first child was born, and she followed me around Germany and to the States (delivering two more children in the process). In 2002 we went back to Europe, where I was stationed at SHAPE Belgium, in 2003 she was in an accident that left her with a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and us minus one child. We returned to Germany (Heidelberg) so she could receive treatment in her native language. During the rehabilitation process, she decided she didn't want to be together anymore and moved out in 2007. Everthing was official in 2008 after I had returned to the States for retirement, and a new career. The only thing I can really say about our relationship, is to take lyrics from a John Lennon song. They go something like this (not sure if I have the quote right but it is real close) "Every man has a woman, if he is lucky he will find her in this lifetime" All I can say is I was lucky, then after the accident, my luck ran out. Thanks for reading

  6. This one took a while as the job, and waiting on a couple of coins that haven't arrived yet. So I sent a couple that I did have along with a rather interesting gift. Enjoy thanks for the cointest
  7. As a US Army retiree, I would really like to have a Blue Star coin. I already bought the Gold Star coin.
  8. All I can say is I too have lost a child. My little girl was six, and five days after a car accident I had to make the decision to turn off the machines. It was the worst day in my life. I think this coin of yours is absolutely fantastic. While I will not participate in the auction, I would like one of the XLE coins to help out the kinderhospize. This coin also gives me an idea for a coin, although not a memorial for my daughter, as I wouldn't know where to send the proceeds. The coin I am thinking about would go to the US Military's Fisher House or Wounded Warrior program. Please pm me with details on the purchase of the coin the brewmeister Edited to add, I guess after rereading the post, I will be participating in the auction

  11. It sounds like a cool idea, kinda like the puzzle many of us as kids probably played with. You all remember, it was maybe 11x17 inches maximum, and the states fit into a border. I think the New England states were one piece and labeled. What I can't remember is if they were labeled on the piece, or on the border... hmmm still a grand project.
  12. I want to thank everyone for their responses. I have created the rough draft, and will go from there. I have given the appropriate credit for those who I quoted. I would like to have been able to just copy and paste this entire thread into my paper, but that would have made it a bit to big, and my grade would probably have suffered. There were great responses, knowing that this is only a small sampling of the caching community, I think that it captures the essence of all cachers. thanks again mods, you can lock this thread.

  16. Thanks to all who have posted responses so far. It is really cool to read the very similar, yet sometimes different things that fascinates all of us about this sport/hobby/addiction we have. Keep them coming, I truly do appreciate it. Once the paper is graded, I will either post it here, or post a link of where it can be read at. Thanks again the brewmeister
  17. All, I am currently taking a college english class, and get to write a research paper. As a geocacher, I chose the topic of what fascinates people about geocaching. I know why I continue to look for the tupperware in the woods, and my two children have different reasons as to why they want to keep coming with me. In order to do accurate research, I am asking the community at large (at least those who visit the forums) - What fascinates you about geocaching? What is it that makes you keep looking for the tupperware?? is it the smileys? the woods? solving puzzles? finding things that others don't even know exist? etc... I plan on consolidating the responses, if anyone has any special reasons and they do not mind me quoting directly (credit will be given by username only) please note that in your comments. I do plan on referencing this topic in my report, and have no control if the instructor or other classmates will want to visit and read. I will thank everyone in advance for their participation (including lack thereof if it comes to that) I will start - I am fascinated by geocaching because it takes me to places I never realized were there. I Germany I would go visit the "off the tourist trail" locations to find fantastic historical places, many with their own story, beautiful nature trails, parks, and even small monuments. All with or involved somehow with a cache. Here in the states I have done the same thing. I found out about a greenway just about one mile from where I live. I don't think I ever would have found this trail (growing to be a collection of trails connecting parks throughout the city) without there being a few caches along the route. My oldest daughter loves finding stuff that others don't know is there. When we were in California I was looking for caches, and my sister, looking over my shoulder, said I go there all the time, you mean there is a cache hidden there (she doesn't cache, but understand the game). That is what my oldest finds fascinating My second daughter likes finding cool stuff in the caches (pencils, foreign coins mostly), walks in the woods, and the thrill of finding the cache. That's my story, eagerly awaiting others responses. BTW thanks in advance for providing me with research information. the brewmeister

  20. Like many others have said, ohhhh shiny (only in more eloquent words). Seriously, as a veteran of the US Army, I was given my first coin as a young Soldier (prior to geocaching). It and the coins I received since then always fascinated me. Mostly because of the history behind the coin, partly because of the design, and even more mostly (grammer I know) because the Boss felt that you had done a really good job and deserved some kind of recognition. Over the years the recognition part faded a bit (but not for the first coins received). The history remains. I like geocoins for much the same reasons, although I do limit myself to coins that represent the military, nature, special places I've been, the navigational coins, and of course the select few that really hit the "ohhhh shiny" nerve. I suppose the sense of community here is really cool as well.... thanks the brewmeister (kids are in the house but not on the forums)
