  1.

When you use Sendmap to upload maps to your GPSr do the maps you upload over write all exisiting maps on your GPSr the same as Mapsource does, or is there a way you can add addtional maps to the GPSr using Sendmap? I would think that it over writes them, but wasn't sure if it is Mapsource Software function that deletes all of your exisiting maps on the GPSr or a fucntion of the GPS. Just wanted a verification. Thanks.

    overwrites just like Mapsource...

So can you load City Navigator and such through SendMap? Does it keep autorouting? Thanks.

you would have to find the .img files for the CN maps you want, plus your custom maps and add them to the list in SendMap...I don't know about the auto-routing...try uploading the CN maps and test it.

  2. Thanks for your videos. I have made custom topo maps and trail maps the question I had with the TYP's is there a way to load city navigator and keep the autorouting, my custom topo maps, custom trail maps and a map customized with the TYP. I use Mapsource now for loading of maps but see you can't use it for TYP maps.

The only application that I know of that can upload TYP files is SendMap20.exe....which can also upload multiple .img files. Note: TYP and SendMap do not work with all Garmin GPSr's.

Use SendMap to upload all your .img files and your TYP file and see if it works.

  3. an example of a simple map customized with TYP...showing ATV tracks color coded (you can choose any color and width for lines/borders) by ride difficulty...

    green - easy

    cyan - moderate

    yellow - difficult

    red - extreme

lines, points and polygons can be customized adding a new dimension to your maps

  4. "We can make all the simple maps we want, but I find it much easier to retain existing Garmin maps and upload all the information I have collected in the field whenever I go out to a particular area."

you said it all right there...retain existing Garmin maps, but instead of uploading all information collected which will not fit in Garmin's limited storage capacity (if you have any amount at all) go ahead and make those simple transparent overlays. What else are you gonna do? And yes...I believe there are SOME people that would like to learn how to make a simple transparent background map from their saved tracks...customizing them with different colors and/or widths and then overlaying US Topo (or other Garmin maps) with them. Therefore the various video tutorials I have created for making transparent overlay maps and using TYP files to customize them are very basic and are intended only to get a beginner going....using all free programs to do it.

  5. I have several questions concerning using the .TYP file to create custom colored roads and trails in ones custom maps using only tracks and waypoints for a Garmin 60CSx. I already use GPSmapEdit and cGPSmapper but have never tried using the .TYP file to change the colors and graphics.

    1. How do you open the .TYP file? When I open the cGPSmapper program as soon as I click on anything the opening page disappears. Everything works fine and I don't have any problems when I'm creating custom maps that I upload with Mapsource.

    2. Can you still upload multiple custom maps with Mapsource when some of your custom maps are made with the .TYP file and some are not? Is the upload procedure the same as just using cGPSmapper?

    3. What addtional steps are involved to customize your trail's color/graphics using the .TYP file?

    I'd appreciate any help. Thanks.

your question #1. there is no need to open a .typ file...the file is created with your typ source file and cGPSMapper...tip...use cyphermans MapSetToolKit http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/home

your question #2. custom maps that you want the typ file to modify have to be uploaded with SendMap20.exe to your GPSr....won't work through Mapsource as Mapsource will only upload your custom map and has no provision to upload your typ file. The only purpose of having your custom map with your typ installed into Mapsource is for viewing your work...much easier than uploading the map and typ with SendMap everytime you want to see what you have created.

your question #3. creating your source typ file and then compiling the typ file is covered starting on page 46 in the latest cGPSMapper manual...I think I gave you a link (in a previous post) to the CustomTypes.zip file that also has the instructions and sample files.

  6. You wil enjoy your Explorist much more if you get the Swivel Mount (craddle.) Attach your cable to this and you can charge or transfer data without having to screw the cable to the back of the unit. You will get tired of this cable very soon, and the mount makes it more fun.

I know what you're saying. I just bought a 500 too. I was using a Meridian Gold up until now. I too am having separation anxiety.

For now I have loaded topo maps on the 500 and am using the Gold with Street maps for backup.

While I'm happy with the 500, I miss the larger screen of the Meridian. Then again, the 500 locks in so much faster and the color is certainly sweet.

I added a one gig SD card so I can have any map or cache files I need.

And yes the swivel mount is great, it saves connecting and disconnecting the cable all the time.

He got a mount in his bundled purchase...it's a suction cup windshield mount with cradle with the snap in port for the cable.

  7. Why did your route point you to the last point you set?

If you noticed the track was actually laid out backwards...watch the video as the track is built you''ll see the point numbers decreasing to 1. When I was making the video I didn't notice this...if this had been an actual track to be saved/used and was backwards and you didn't want to do it over, all you'd have to do is reverse the track in the Track Log menu on your GPSr.

  8. MapSend does not have a Track creation tool so here's a tutorial with video and step by step text instructions to make your own tracks.

Although you can create Routes in MapSend you are limited to 50 points per route (can't make a very detailed route with only 50 points) and the resulting route image on the GPSr screen is cluttered with waypoint icons.

Tracks can be made very detailed and they show up on the GPSr screen as a line with no waypoint icons to obstruct the maps view.

Feedback is welcome on this and any other of my video tutorials.

  9. I'll fire them off this evening as I am stuck @work right now.

you didn't send me the control file for making the preview map...but from what you did send me I need to ask you this:

When you export your map in GPSMapEdit are you naming/saving the .img file as a hex I048F1F32.img or a decimal 45678901.img? It needs to be a unique 8 digit decimal number and the same .img file name must be used in the control file when you create the preview file.

  10. I used cgpsmapper and created all the files necessary. I have created a folder in garmin directory to put files and edited the registry accordingly.

The map does show up in mapsource and is useable on the computer, but when I try to select the map for upload to the gps, this is where the trouble starts. It will not allow me to select the custom maps to send to the gps.

email me (or attach files to a message on this board) your map XXX.mp file created in GPSMapEdit and your preview XXX.mp file and I'll try figure out what your problem is

  11. Hello folks, bear with me as this may take a while to explain. I mapped some trails last night on my gps. I travelled 30 km, with some backtracking, leaving the GPS on all the while to lay down trackpoints. After I got home I transferred the track to OziExplorer so i could remove the trackpoints where I backtracked. When you delete trackpoints, the track will snap to the next available point. This shows an incorrect track, so you then split the track at this point. After doing this I have the 5 or 6 sections of tracks displayed on the map as I want them displayed. When I transfer the track back to the GPS, the track is rejoined at the point I split. So I transferred it to Mapsource, and the track appears in Mapsource as I want it to display. But I can't get it to display on the GPS the same way. I know I can do it if I save it as a number of separate tracks, but the GPS is limited to 20 named tracks (other than stored on the card - but I want them in the list so I can manage them one at a time on the GPS). Is there any way I can get the tracks to display on the GPS like they do in mapsource as ONE track.? I have a bitmap image here that shows a little clearer what I'm talking about. If someone could be so kind as to post it for me, I'll email it to you. Thanks for any help you can offer.

email me the bitmap and the raw .gdb file before you did any editing and also the .gdb file that you edited

  12. Hello all-

I just purchased and received a Magellan eXplorist 500 at a very good price. This unit did not come with the MapSend Topo 3D offer for $9.99. Is there a way that I can get on board with this offer? Is there a way to get the disc and enable it after the fact? How about getting the unlock code and borrowing a disc from someone to load in my computer and unlock it there?

I have not yet registered the unit, so I don't know at this point if I can buy the unlock code upon registration. I also don't know if I will be offered the Topo product at some time during the registration. So, I guess I'm looking at appealing to those who might have gone through this process to let me know if there is a way to get in on this offer.

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer.

I purchased a couple of Explorist 500's from different sellers....one packge was bundled with DirectRoute NA v3 and the other was just the 500 GPSr from a local retailer. The retailer had a Magellan display ad on the counter offering the 3D Topo software for $9.99 to Expolrist purchasers, but when I got home the box did not have the DVD or coupon code. I called Magellan customer service and they gave me a fax number to fax my purchase receipt to. A few days later I recieved the DVD and coupon code from Magellan...I now have the Topo 3D installed.

  13. Nicely done...two videos must be worth about 10 bajillion words. It would be nice if Magellan offered this type of tutorial on their web site so you wouldn't have to create them yourself.

Would you mind if I linked to your files from my Explorist review? (you might not want to...I'm not sure if the bandwidth demand might possibly push you over limits...if that turned out to be a problem, though, I'd happily take the link down)

Better yet...take my zip file and host it on your site...then I won't have to worry about my bandwidth. I would appreciate a notation of credit on your site for creating the video.

  14. Having only owned Garmin GPS receivers in the past I thought I would check out Magellan. I just recently purchased an Explorist 500 Traveler Bundle online at a great price of $209 delivered...the package included MapSend DirectRoute NA V3, vehicle mount, Li-Ion battery, USB and battery charger cables and a cig power cord.

Now I have to say that Magellan sure has a different way of getting detailed maps loaded into the Explorist series as compared to the ease of loading maps into a Garmin. So I made up a video showing the process that may help someone struggling with getting maps into their Explorist series. Actually I created two videos (play in Windows Media Player)...one showing how to get the maps onto your data card and the other how to enable the maps on the GPSr. I also wrote up step by step text instructions found in the READ_ME_FIRST.txt file (print the instructions out to follow along with video)

Thanks Cypherman...I just tried your new version...works great!

  16. griker has an excellent manual with sample files showing how to use custom TYP files to alter polylines, points and polygons in maps produced with GPSMapEdit/cGPSMapper. Get his manual HERE His email address is griker98121 (at) yahoo (dot) com

cypherman has a nice application for installing TYP and mapsets into Mapsource. Get his application HERE His email address is cypherman1 (at) gmail (dot) com

Here is a Mapsource screenshot of a custom map I made using GIS data downloaded from USGS and NHD Geodatabase for roads, rivers, towns, lakes, railroads plus GPS tracks from an ATV park in TN. I used a TYP file to edit the color and width of the ATV trails to better help distinguish trail types north (purple/green) and south (yellow/cyan) of Highway 116. Sure looks good on the GPSr too!

    typdemo.jpg

  17. When your custom trail maps are created, can you assign a color to the polylines created?

i.e. Red line for the red trail?

When I put the cursor over the custom trail, will I be able to set the label to say "Red trail"?

Say I do part of the red trail today and another part tomorrow. Will I be able to combine the tracks into a single file?

Does each trail need to be in it's own map or can I have a complete trail map for a given park?

    Thanx

    Hey all.

I want to say a big thankyou to everyone who contributed to this post. As I've mentioned in other posts, I was very dissapointed to see my new expensive 60CSX with data card could only store 20 tracks. I've tried this track to transparent map thing, and though it took 6 hours, it worked amazingly. I have yet to try changing the trails to different colours, but for now I'm happy.

    Thanks!

Here is a real basic example of using TYP. The polyline shown in the screenshot was defined in GPSMapEdit as a 0x0016 Walkway/trail which normally would show up as a fairly thin dashed green line...but using a custom TYP file you can edit it to whatever you want...in my example a thick yellow line with a thinner red border. With TYP you can assign colors and line/border thickness. You can also edit points and polygons. The vertical black line to the right is a state highway from the 276c's basemap.

Does your application eliminate the need to use GPSMapEdit and cGPSmapper? Do you still have to run the registry each time you create a new custom map? Can you give me more details on how the application works. I've been waiting for someone to come up with one program that will do the entire process of making transparent custom maps that are compatible with Mapsource. Any additional info. will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yes and no. You make your own maps with GPSmapedit, after your take my application to generate TDB file, reg file (to add mapset in mapsource) and global map. My application use cgpsmapper in background. With my application, any peaple, can make your own maps, because your don't learn to make a pv file and make REG file.

Plus, my application convert TDB files make with cgpsmapper (Product TDB) to Families TDB.

After this convert, you can use TYP file in mapsource or GPS.

In the next version of the application, I will add the compilation of TYP file.

Can you help me figure out what's wrong?

    Hi rws!

Mapsource don't tranfert TYP file in GPS. Use sendmap20.exe to tranfert your maps and TYP files in your GPs.

Next week, a new version will be available. (More validation, show Product code and ID for each mapset, compile TYP file)

    Cypherman

I was hoping TYP would upload to GPSr through Mapsource. I got the impression it would by your previous statement:

"Plus, my application convert TDB files make with cgpsmapper (Product TDB) to Families TDB.

After this convert, you can use TYP file in mapsource or GPS."

I'm wondering what is the point of having a TYP modified map in Mapsource when it can't be uploaded to a GPSr through Mapsource?

  20. I have Garmin Mapsource on my pc right now with City Nav v-8 on it. I just got a copy of Garmin Us Topo and don't know how to load it onto my Mapsource.

I can run it on there but need to insert the disk into my drive everytime.

Also when I go to load maps from Topo to my Etrex Cx I have to remove the memory card from the gps unit and slide it into the card reader on my printer and load maps to it that way. I can't leave it in my gps unit to transfer. This is only with Us Topo though. With my City Nav v8 I can just plug the gps unit in with usb and load maps that way.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Remove your current Topo installation using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Create a directory on your harddrive and copy the folders/files from the TOPO cd's to it...run setup.
