  1. Although, I have to say, there's something to be said for geocaching when you can look at a piece of land that's barely suitable for anything and yet you can find a cache there! There is also something to be said for "encouraging" the geocachers who take personal time and resources to establish an urban cache. Sure, these are not as grandiose as the “top100” SD caches, but for a lunchtime grab, beginners, or a quick outing with kids they fill a need. I imagine that just like other endeavors, geocaching experience can sometimes raise expectations to a point where “urban” geocaches are disappointing. When that happens I guess you can only ask for your money back.
  2. Congrats redstareg on 1 !!! Thanks for the congrats!! I decided to do Local Treasure for my 100th thanks to Cat & Bobby's recomendation and it was alot of fun. Now I guess it's time to look for another special one to do for my 250th. GOOD JOB , and really quick. Hope Local Treasure was as muchfun for you as it was for us. I am sure you will wiz right past us at the speed you are going.
  3. But of course! I mean, after all, San Diego is one of the country's premier destinations for conventions of all sorts. Although this may not be a "Convention Center" type convention, it is definitely a "convention" and San Diego certainly has the facilities to host an event like this. I have all kinds of connections in the Hospitality Industry and with all the convention folks, so I can and will certainly help in any way I can. When's the first planning meeting? Do you need some help on the application to the Selection Committee? I have only ideas for the write up to the selection comittee. First and formost, we need a location. Dave (C4) suggested Lake Skinner for the actual event/picnic and I like the lake but I'm afraid that is too small for folks who want to camp, especially on Memorial Day week end. I have a list of items the selection people want addressed in the application. I will send it to you via email Tom. I guess one thing to decide right off the bat is whether we should communicate as a planning group via an e-mail distribution list or through a separate thread on the forums or both. It seems this topic should (eventually) probably have its own thread. I like the idea of a thread. That way, those of us that may or may not be able to help can still "listen in" & if something comes up that we COULD do, we could jump in. Trouble is, is there any way to keep the thread so that just SD cachers see it & no one else? That way, people from other areas that plan on coming to it can't get all of the secrets ahead of time. When Podcacher (Sonny & Sandy) were setting up the geocaching booth for the NECC conference, they used Yahoogroups.com and that worked real well. It made sure the entire group received all the same emails, yet still kept is private.
  4. I'll second that - congrats to all that have hit recent milestones!!!! I got my 50th last night since I signed up on June 19 - thinking about which cache to grab for my 100th - any recommendations? RedStar (Tony) Cat and I just did our number 100th and we selected "Local Treasure" (GCM5XJ). We just finished it today, so there is a nice Travel Bug waiting for you there.
  5. The helicopter circled a few times lighting up the group hiking down from the main peak and then the group at the top. Then they left and we never saw them again. It helped with visibility for the few minutes they did it. Toby's Gang and I were the last ones off the mountain at about 5:15am. It was just starting to get light out as we got to the cars. What's the coordinates for the grave sites? No grave sites; we all made it out alive! We left lots of sweat behind but the mtn did not take away our determination. Duganrm and Toby's gang were about 1/2 hour behind the main pack (Jahoadi n John, JohnnyA, Sled Head, PC Woody, Passing Wind, Duganrm, Toby's Gang, SlabyDad and myself ) towards the end. Matter of fact we last saw them at Gecko's Gurl Turnaround where we feasted on our stashed water. We next saw them as they emerged out of the morning mist, literally staggering to the parking lot. It was quite a sight and hurt to watch them. Way to go guys! By the numbers: Tripmeter: 17.01 miles Moving time: 7.37 hours Stopped time: 2.58 hours Moving Avg: 2.2 mph Max Speed: 9.6 mph Total Ascent: 5310 feet Total Descent: 5335 feet Water consumed: 150 onces Memories caching with a great group of cachers: priceless. This is down right amazing, what an adventure you all must have had. Cat and I will have to get in shape to try this one once it cools off a little, she doesn't like catting around at night. Congrats to all of you, even the short hike group accomplished a great journey.
  6. Mt. Laguna or the Beach We recently trailer camped at Laguna campground and cached some nearby caches. It was cooler than most of San Diego, but warmer than the beach. We reserved our site at http://www.reserveusa.com/ which is a must for weekends. If you tent camp, either THE Laguna or Burnt Ranchita campgrounds would work. If you go mid-week, you don't need reservations, we stayed an extra day and had the campground to ourselves.
  7. That's a cool area! I thought "Champa" was missing last time we were there? Cat and I will be camping at Laguna campground, so if we see some suspicious folks wandering around looking at thier cell phone, we will know it you guys and say hello. Nope , air conditioned travel trailer with a cool lemonaide, we plan on caching many of these early in the morning to avoid the heat. Sounds like my kind of camping! Portable hotel room with A/C, a bed and a shower! It's only supposed to be in the mid 80s so that isn't too bad! Hope to meet you, have a great day caching Look for a red Durango...that would be us! Sites 36 & 39 are us (showing friends what caching is)
