  1. When did this become a beauty contest? Everyone here has something to add to the mix. What kind of pie it will come out to be in the end is anyones guess.

If GARMIN every gives us the option of deselecting POI (or minimizing it) I would probably use City Select. Jolly R. Blackburn http://kenzerco.com I dont have Metroguide, as City Select is what cam with my V, but I have been posting on here for a few months to try to get enough people to email garmin asking for the feature of disabling the POI data download. Here in chicago im 500K to big to fit all the maps I would like into the V's 19meg. I too hardly use all the huge POI data in the city. Being able to not download it Im sure would save a ton of room for more maps. So, I urge folks to go to Garmin's web site and email them with the feature request to disable the POI data download. As far as Cityselect 4.01 accuracy, its been VERY good everyplace I have taken it so far. From Chicago to Northern California and back. Not haveing played with Metroguide, I dont think it supports the V's autorouting function, does it?

That way we can toss our inane commentary around in real time. Ghods knows I was the brunt of enough of it on the last trip.

  10. If you are familure with an area, sure, you could set waypoints and follow the map. But as been said afore, the maps can be kind of small to see. When the V gets to a turn it beeps and displays a large turn arrow. Also, you will find yourself using the rerouting feature more then you think. Miss a turn and the V just figures a new route from where you are. It also beeps at you to let you know you are off route. Its nice to be able to put in one waypoint and just tell the V to route you there. No muss, no fuss. Call me lazy, but I like it.
  11. Go get 4.10.3 beta. They were trying to be cute and put the "no autorouting data" box on the USB tab, because USB connections dont tell mapsource what type of GPSR you have. But in doing so they upset the folks that use that checkbox with their serial GPSR's. in the .3 beta they moved it back to the main window so its available for both serial and USB tabs. Logicly, if i understand mapsource right (I may not) Mapsource should be able to figure out your 76S, connected via serial port, does not support autorouting and automatically not download the data. But im not sure it does. While your at it, woudl you mind senting Garmin an email asking for a identical type of check box to eliminate the POI data from the download? I, and others hardly ever use the huge POI data, and would rather have the space available for more maps and such. If garmin hears this from enough people maybe they will impliment it.
  12. quote:Originally posted by CacheMasterCobb:Now that Rino's are available, is there a channel that cachers should use when out caching, in order to try and meet other cachers in the area? I suggest channel 4 when out Geo caching. The board has talked about this often. The general concensus was Cnl 2 and 12 as a backup. See here for more info. -MarkweXXXXXXXX Centaur.

I'd like it to be more broad, like "Difficulty changes based on weather conditions." Though something less verbose would be nice. Jeremy Irish Groundspeak - The Language of Location Maybe this is beating a dead horse (or centaur - Now on my own proposal, I begin to wonder if its just best to leave it up to the cache description to inform folks about increased difficulty for snow/weather. AS now that I think about it more, would that really be used as a cache selection attribute for a search? Possibly in an exclusion form (to eliminate caches harder with snow or other heavy ground cover, etc.) But now I hold no strong inclination to it. As you say, something less verbose might be nice.. perhaps not based on weather at all., Maybe something like: Difficulty changes with Ground Cover. But that may describe too many caches. --- Still would like to see: NOT Travelbug Friendly. So folks trying to place bugs can exclude caches they should not be hitting, and leaving bugs outside the container.

  15. quote:Originally posted by CCrew:Umm, if you download the http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/download_beta.html from Garmin's site, the checkbox you are asking for is there. If you are refering to the box to upload the ROUTING Info, that has been there in Mapsource for a while. I woudl like garmin to include a box to disable the uploading of the POI info. I dint use the Points Of Information data much, and woudl rather that space be free for maps. I just checked 10.3 and that feature is not there.
  16. quote:Originally posted by bckane:So I guess if I go on a trip somewhere I have to bring the laptop to load the maps...... Thanks [This message was edited by bckane on December 07, 2002 at 01:42 PM.] Hi bckane! See this Report on My Vacation with a GPSV for some info. Yes, sometimes you need to bring the laptop to reload maps, BUT if all you are going to be doing is driving from City A to City B along major roadways, then all you really need is the maps around City B. The GPSV will still do auto routing using the built in basemap of major roads. You only really need the Mapsource data for the area around your destination, assuming you want street level info and closeup maps and POI and all the rest there. Since I was still experimenting with the maps in the V when we took our vacation I would load segments of the maps before each days drive (or multiple days drive when they would fit) I really didnt need to do that just for straight runs down highways and such, as that info is in the basemap. But it was fun to play around with the mapsource info. Have fun! -------- On another tact, yes, there is a checkbox in Mapsource to cause it not to download the ROUTING info, thus making the maps smaller and faster to transfer. I woudl like to ask that everyone with a GPSV write to Garmin asking for a checkbox in Mapsource to cause it not to download the POI information. Again, making the maps smaller, so we can fit more in. I hardly use the POI, i woudl rather have more maps in the V. See the garmin website for their support email address. Thanks! -
  17. Once you get close to the cache coordinates, your GPS direction pointer may bounce around. Ignore it at this point, and walk to reduce the "Distance to waypoint" display down to as close to 0 as you can. At that point start your search for the cache in a general circle pattern from that point. After a while, you will become acustomed to using "The Force" You will begin to see the places that are likely hiding spots.
  18. I was going to say something here.... But its not my place. Ill let UMC or the Toe do it.
  19. quote:Originally posted by ClayJar:Actually, thanks to GPX, I'll be able to have queries that send me GPX files of Louisiana and the surrounding states, and then I'll simply do all the searching, filtering, or what-have-you on my local computer. (Yet another benefit of my Geocaching.com membership... and they only asked for $30!) Good point. But not everyone here will be able to do that. All depents I guess on how much logic and coding Jeremy wants to provide in the site, or wants to leave to the GPX/downloading and local processing folks. I hope this discussion is helping Jeremy out.
  20. Yes. Log them. A find is a find! You can even log Caches without a GPS. Some folks use maps. Some just stumble on a cache. No where does it say you have to use a GPSr to find a cache or a benchmark.
  21. quote:Originally posted by ClayJar: quote:Originally posted by Centaur:I believe it will be easier in the long run to take the cache database and Exclude the ones you dont care to visit as opposed to start with an empty set and include the ones you do want to visit. I'm afraid that I must disagree strongly. Let me try to explain why. Not a Problem. Nowhere did I say that I didnt want inclusionary attributes. Eazier to program exclusionary perhaps, but inclusionary have their uses too. Its 2 sides of the same coin. quote:I don't go to just any cache. In fact, since I've grown out of the neocacher stage, I've become even more particular about the caches I hunt. I have a search for all caches with terrain 4+ in a 500-mile radius. I even use Google to try to find hydrocaches. Works for me. Im sure there are cases where starting with the empty set and including only specific caches will fill the bill better then starting with the full set and trying to eliminate the ones you dont want. I was just trying to think along the way I cache now. quote:Excluding the caches I don't want to hunt is akin to filtering spam. (NO! I'm _not_ calling the caches spam... read with me here.) I want to find the 5-10% of caches I personally want to hunt, and whatever the rest of the caches are is of no consequence at all. I don't want to know about it; I don't want to think about it. When I want to hydrocache, I want to hydrocache. A perfect example of a need filled by inclusionary attributes. Works for me. quote:Now, back when I was a neocacher, I would try to hunt *all* the caches near me. Perhaps then I would have considered exclusionary cache attributes more valuable, but I attempted, or at least looked at, all the caches. Having the "no tall guy cachers with long hair" cache attribute would have saved me a little time in avoiding those caches, but it wasn't like I needed to do a lot of searching to find the caches that don't exclude tall guy cachers with long hair. I wasn't particular, and in the end, it turned out that I enjoyed some caches far more than others. Which brings me to where I am now. I'd like to be able to search on a hydrocache attribute so I can find more exciting hydros to hunt. I'd like to be able to search for biking trail caches so I can actually get my bike out of mothballs and use it. I don't care one iota (well, not three iotas, then) about the rest of cache-dom; I only want to find the caches I want to hunt. Jeremy, the selection logic we are going to get you to program for this is going to be a hummdinger! Too bad there isnt a boolian expression interface for us do-it-yourself'ers. quote:So, basically, my philosophy is that cache attributes can be inclusionary or exclusionary, the sign makes no difference, really. It's what makes it different from normal that matters. I think you have hit it though... For the neo's (Which I am) I would probably be using exclusion more for my searches. Its the quick-n-dirty way of filtering the ones I dont care for. On the other hand, as you state, more selective more experienced folks might find it eazier to include only caches, as your example states. quote:Basically, cache attributes should be simple flags that tell you what's special about the cache. They should be simple flags, not tri-state (or multi-state) variables. "Container-Size (micro/small/medium/large/747/virtual/unknown)" is overloading what should be a *very* simple concept: A cache attribute is basically the logical equivalent of a plain vanilla checkbox, and, "_We don't need no hanging chads._" There ya go. I was not focusing so much on the specific attributes, my programming mind was trying to visualize the selection logic was all, ans what might be eazier for the general cacher. Of course, how does one define a general cacher? I dunno. Pardon me while I go hang chad...
  22. Any good database designer will tell you you dont start with the input data, you start with what you want OUT of the system. That will dictate what data you have to put In. Think for a little on how you would like to search and display the cache lists... And eazy example: I always cache with my Dog. So I want to EXCLUDE any cache marked NO DOGS. So there needs to be at the minimum a NO DOGS attribute, being an exclusionary mark. I would think Dogs Ok - Leashed and Dogs Ok - Unleashed might be more data then a cache needs, but I dont own a dog. They would be examples of Inclusionary Attributes. Where you would only include a cache if they were marked. Which might lead to problems if the cache placer does not know if dogs are ok. Same thing with NO DOGS, if they cache placer does not know, he leaves it unmarked, and you have to find out the old fashion way, when you get there with your dog. I tend to think exclusionary attributes are more valuable, that is to eliminate from the search caches you really dont want to go for that dont meet your minimum criteria. Boat Required/ Aquacaches/special equipment/etc. Could all be used to Exclude caches from the search. As for things like "kid Friendly" I think it should be "NOT Kid Friendly" as agian, you might be looking to exclude a small number of caches from the list. (Arent most caches kid friendly? I believe it will be eazier in the long run to take the cache database and Exclude the ones you dont care to visit as opposed to start with an empty set and include the ones you do want to visit. My 2 cents for the morning. YMMV

Yea, I guess one can't be too careful these days. Just having met my first big group of Cachers at the Capture the Flag Event, it was nice to see a good group of folks. No "wierdos" persey, unless you count the guy that drifted over, said he was "The Mayor" and warmed by our fire then stood around... then drifted away. (No, not a cacher, just an unknown park wanderer.) As for me, I tried being a creepo once... till my wife kicked me hard in the shin. OUCH!
