  1. If you consider a 'prize' for the FTF something that doesn't need to be traded for, what happens if the FTF doesn't take it. If the STF takes it, is it still a prize, or should they trade for it now? I know it's (almost) all academic, since nardly any9ne apparently trades up r even anyway. All the good stuff disappears also from my caches in no time at all, with nothing or rubbish in return. And there are people who take good swag, trading it for a traveller, convinced they are doing the right thing. I think there is already plenty of room for confusion, without adding a concept of 'prizes' that you don't need to trade for. I think special swag for the TFT is fine, but they should leave something in its place. Or at least I didn't know the slogan had become 'trade up or even, unless it's a prize'.

  2. "Trade up or even" does not apply to trackables. Trackables just want to move from cache to cache (or so somewhere specific. Some cache owners mention in their listing that you should not take more trackables from the cache than you leave behind, but that is a bogus rule. Where trackables are concerned, the CO is not the ruling party, you are dealing with the trackable owners and they probably do want you to move their trackables along.

"Trade up or even" is for swag.

I'm not a new cacher but this question has been on my mind for some time now. When I began caching I read somewhere that if you take a trackable then you should leave a trackable. Has this ever been how everyone else is doing it, or am I playing with this rule all by myself? It only makes sense to me that if I remove an object of value from a cache then I should replace it with an object of like value. I know that I do seek out caches that show that they contain trackables; and if others in the area do the same then my take & leave policy will allow others that prefer to find trackables a supply of caches that fit their caching preferences.

  3. You're welcome! Glad you liked it :)

P.S. Willem van der Decken is the (apparently fictitious) Flying Dutchman (maybe that sounds a bit more familiar)

I returned home from skiing this weekend, to find a heavy envelope in my mailbox! I figured I knew it was this mission. It had arrived all the way from Italy, very cool!!

A nice card, with Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Felice Natale from Italy! And it had a coin and wrapped goodies in it too!

The coin is a Willem van der Decken Dutch Geocoin 2011 that I have never seen before. The goodies were cool heiroglyphic bookmarks, and Giro d'Italia magnets. There also is a rose pin on the card too!

Thanks for a neat mission from an international destination!

    Grazie!!

  4. Again, my point is that a big part of the fun in collecting something is to be able to show your collection to others. Showing geocoins to other geocachers without them being able to log them as discovered really isn't that much fun. I think it's a shame that activated and used are considered almost synonyms here, but that's why I also keep most of mine unactivated.

  5. Well, circulated vs. non-circulated makes sense, but I do think it's a shame that activating is considered something similar. Again, who knows in the long run it may be considered added value! I propose an actrivation revolution! If we all just start looking at it differently, we can enjoy our coins more, as long as they are in our possession :)

  6. I know that unactivated coins are more sought after than activated coins. So I guess for that reason a lot of people don't activate the coins in their collection. I think that is a bit of a shame, because showing your collection to others (and having them discover coins) is part of the fun.

Personally, I have organized my coins alphabetically in binders (yes it's crazy, because with every new arrival a lot of coins need to moved to a new slot). I have activated the coins in my first binder, so all my coins with names starting with A, B, or C, can be discovered. So I can easily bring that binder to events or other get-togethers.

Who knows, maybe in the future activated coins will be considered more interesting, because they have more history thanks to the logs. And as long they are only discovery logs, the coin shouldn't have travelled and remain in good condition. Coins are meant to be activated eventually, and who cares if that happens through adoption or otherwise.

I'm curious to hear how others see this.

  7. Does it say "Trackable on geocaching.com" or "Track this coin on geocaching.com" anywhere on the coin? If not, it is nont trackable on geocaching.com (maybe on some other site). If it does, you should have problems logging it (unless it's unactivated, bu you would be warmed about that when you enter the tracking code).

  8. I have a few orders outstanding at Geoswag, and was trying to get a status update from them. Now I'm not sure I've written to the right address (I wrote to shop at geoswag dot com). There is no contact email listed on their website as far as I can tell. Any tips anyone?
