SA affects just the "domestic" equipment. I read that the reason they turned off SA in the first Gulf war was because they ran out of military kit, so issued a lot of the troops with "domestic" GPSrs(!)
  2. There's been at least two others - "ukgeocaching@yahoogroups.com" and "ukgeocachers@yahoogroups.com" ...both of which died due to lack of interest.
  3. Maybe Team Minim was right. quote:"Trolls are recognizable by the fact that the have no real interest in learning about the topic at hand - they simply want to utter flame bait." I think it's time to start ignoring this thread, and maybe he'll go away...
  4. ...just striking a blow for the ovine contingent. POWER TO THE SHEEP!!! (oh, and hello to minstrelcat) (EDIT: Apologies for the mess below. I think my browser had a sudden attack of pro-sheep enthusiasm, and decided to strike more blows for the ovine contingent than I ever intended!!!) 5. I think somebody might have imbibed slightly too much "water of tyne"...
  6. quote:I think this has gone far enough. Thank goodness for that! For a moment there, we were all pulling together as a community, on thread with no in-fighting, trolling, wielding of baseball bats, or insertion of GPSRs where the sun don't shine... glad to see normal service will be resumed shortly...
  7. No need to apologise, I wan't having a dig at anybody in particular... just expressing amusement at the sudden flurry of activity in a 2-year-old thread
  8. quote:Then someone comes up with the idea of different coloured cases for your gps , Blue for finding 100 and so on.Its all starting to get a bit ridiculous and childish now. jUST MY VIEWS AND OPEN TO SCORN Nige No scorn from me - I agree 100% - and putting the sheer "geekishness" aspect aside for a moment, the "found" totals aren't really that accurate a yardstick of caching achievement anyway... we all do different caches, of different difficulties, in areas of different cache densities. Some people's entry to the "100 club" is the achievement of them driving thousands of miles to far-flung places of interest... other people's entry to the "100 club" is just a measure of how efficient they were at improvising a few dozen non-locationals on their doorstep. I think that dishing out "awards" for certain "found" totals would just push the game even further towards the "numbers" mentality... I mean... we're even at the stage now where people are wanting to log the "suspected" lid of a trashed cache as a find, just to get their stats up... Madness!

  10. If you have a link cable, you can change the icons using "unofficial" hacks to the etrex firmware. (Obviously this is done at your own risk!!!!) For details, see: http://www.etrex.webz.cz/hack.html
  11. Do you connect to the web via a proxy server? (look in Tools->Internet Settings->Connection->LAN Settings to find out)
  12. quote:Originally posted by MarcB:Lets hope the unmentionable has'nt happened... Let's not jump to conclusions - I think the suggestions given on the cache page are a lot more likely: "we found that the place where the cache is hidden had recently been composted and the cache had probably been taken" "we set it in the summer and since then, all the cover has gone"
  13. quote:Originally posted by Teasel:I just got an email from Elias. He's quite busy at the moment ...busy banging his head against the desk trying to figure out what's happened to my "charter membership" status, I hope! Great to see that stats back. I'm amazed at how many new dots have appeared on my autoroute map since the last update! - I thought winter was supposed to be a quiet time for caching! John TGS.
  14. quote:Originally posted by Travers:Maybe it's just me, but I still don't understand the reason for the map-downloading thingumy and why people see the need for it. It's a guy thing.
  15. quote:Jason has just replied and said that he checked it 4 weeks ago and it was still there. Looks like some more searching is in order. (I'm rather glad it is still there as it is one of the older UK caches still active.) Rats! That means we *have* to go back... (mind you, it would be nice if cache owners would update the cache pages to confirm that all is well when there's a long string of no-finds!)
  16. Once you've logged a cache, the entry should stay on your "my cache page" permanantly (even if the cache is archived.... which doesn't happen very often!) The problem *might* be due to the way your internet browser is configured. Try going to your "my cache page", and then hold down the CTRL and F5 keys on your keyboard - this will refresh the browser and ensure that you're looking at the very latest version of the page.
  17. quote:Originally posted by Richard & Beth:If there are any caches such as Obelisk that you think should be archived it is worth e-mailing either ourselves or Tim and June and we can then do something about it. If you're taking nominations, then we've got a long-held grudge against GCAA2 (Hasn't been found for over a year, owner's e-mail address no longer valid)
  18. quote:Originally posted by TreeBeard (Pid):Software....you mean you actually PAY for software Blimey Pid - you've already done a good job of making enemies with the hippies this week... are you spoiling for a fight with us software developers next?
  19. quote:By that definition, Stone Henge is litter. Heh heh... Funnily enough, that's what I wrote in my first draft of the message. Then I remembered that we've called a truce on the hippy-baiting
  20. quote:without getting my dictionary out, 'Meta' means hidden, Urm, I think you should have got your dictionary out...
  21. To some people, any man made object placed in the countryside is litter. To me, caches are like signboards, fenceposts, and those little knobbly bits of wood that tell you where you're supposed to be walking... They're man made items that have been *deliberately* placed in the countryside to enhance our use and enjoyment of it. A very different kettle of fish!
