  1. I'm not sure what caused it in my case, but after installing some software or another on my PC, my 60CSx was no longer recognized when I plugged it in via USB. To fix it, I had to go to Device Manager (where the GPSr was listed with one of those evil "We have a problem" yellow exclamation points beside it), and delete the device from the list. The next time I attached the GPSr, Windows took me through the process of reinstalling the unit's USB drivers (I seem to remember having to insert the MapSource CD in the CD drive at some point). That fixed the problem (permanently, I hope ). --Larry
  2. When I connect my unit via USB, the "USB (Garmin Data Format)" field says "Connected". It sure sounds like, for some reason, your unit isn't being "seen" by the program (and maybe not by Windows). Try launching MapSource, going to the Utilities menu, and selecting "Get Unit ID...." Can MapSource detect your unit? If not, you might need to reinstall the USB drivers (which are included on the MapSource CD). --Larry
  3. A 1GB card will hold a lot of maps! But can you load and delete them individually? It would be a major drag if MapSource still deleted the entire map set before loading a new one. Yep, I'm afraid it still works the same way. You can't add or delete specific maps stored on the card, you can only replace the entire map image with one new map image. It appears that MapSource has to combine all the map segments you select (from the multiple map products you may have available) into one seamless file which (depending on whether you select the option) includes auto-routing data that often has to span multiple map segments. It's probably a lot more efficient to do it that way than to have a whole bunch of map files on the unit that the unit's processor has to integrate on the fly. It's still a pain as far as the user is concerned.... --Larry
  4. That doesn't sound good. I was hoping that with the microSD card Garmin had abandoned the destructive-write process of loading maps. Does loading maps on the card delete all the maps already on it? Yep, I'm afraid so. You can't add or delete specific maps stored on the card, you can only replace the entire map image with one new map image. 5. The WebUpdater software requires that your GPSr be attached to the PC when it's run. It needs to identify the model in order to know which updates apply to it. If you didn't have the GPSr attached to the PC when you ran the program (and it doesn't sound as if you did based on your posting), WebUpdater can't do its thing. If you did have the GPSr connected, you'll need to look for communications problems. HTH! --Larry
  6. Evansville, Indiana (which is what I presume you meant) is included in the BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA map segment in City Navigator v8. Not every American city, even at 100,000 population, will have a map segment named after it. --Larry
  7. I got my copy of City Navigator North America v8 yesterday. The new version 8 CD box doesn't mention the version number on the front; however, mine, at least, says "VERSION 8" on the sticker on the back that has the serial number. I bought it from GPSNow.com. In contrast, my version 7 box says "North America v7" on the front of the box. --Larry
  8. If you look closely at Garmin's Web page ( http://www.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/citynav.jsp ), you'll notice that the only thing that has been changed so far is that"v7" has been replaced by "v8" throughout the page. Everything else on that page, every word, and all the pages connected to it, is exactly the same as when they were selling v7. It's bad Web site practice, but all they've done so far is do a "search and replace" on the version number, and haven't gotten around to changing anything else yet. Bottom line, I won't believe anything on that Web page regarding v8 features until they finish updating the page. I wish they wouldn't update the page until the whole thing is ready for prime time. It's confusing a whole lot of people about what to expect from the new version. You might want to check out the write-up at http://www.gpsnow.com/gmmscnna.htm which seems to have the scoop on details about the new version (except for when they link back to pages on Garmin's Web site, of course ). --Larry
  9. Sorry, but I can't seem to duplicate what you're seeing. Have you tried (grasping at straws here) restoring the defaults on the Compass page? --Larry
  10. I'm not sure if this will help, but when I select a destination in my 60CSx and press "Go To" in the "Follow Road" mode, when I actually reach the location (indicated by a checkered flag and a message popping up on the screen), the unit automatically stops navigating and "Stop Navigation" is grayed out. This is normal behavior on my unit, anyway. I don't remember whether the same thing happens when you use "Off Road" mode to navigate to a location. I do know that when you're navigating to a geocache, you need to either manually stop navigation or choose "Found" on the compass page to turn off navigation. --Larry
  11. On the GPSr, go to the Main Menu; select Tracks; select Setup; then select Data Card Setup. On that screen, near the top, you'll see the percentage of space on the card that's been filled. --Larry
  12. It cannot be a problem involving just City Navigator, because I have City Navigator NA v7 loaded, and I can't duplicate the problem after trying all sorts of addresses. The address search works for me on my 60CSx with City Navigator. --Larry
  13. My tests (on a 60CSx) were on the ADDRESSES search page, not the CITY search page. I've tried all sorts of addresses in all sorts of cities and regions, and entered the data in various orders on the screen, and the search has worked fine every time. This search has worked as advertised since I bought the 60CSx, and still works fine after multiple updates. I'm now running the latest versions of the software (2.90 and 2.60), and the search still works. The GPSr has City Navigator NA v7 and US Topo loaded on a 1GB card. --Larry
  14. Well, I have City Navigator (v7) maps loaded, and my GPSr doesn't have the problem. --Larry
  15. In case it makes a difference, I have 25 Regions worth of maps stored on my 1GB card, including, of course, Ohio. --Larry
  16. When I do a "Search Addresses" with my 60CSx, the first (top) field is Region, which in my case defaults to Ohio, since that's where I'm located. The next field is for City, then Number, then Street Name. CbusRog stated that "When I use the Find Address feature, I can enter the street number and street name, but when I enter the first letter of the City Name, the list disappears and I get None Found." Question 1: For those who are encountering this problem, are you entering the data using the fields in order, are do you jump to the street number and street name fields, then try to enter the city? Question 2: If you are entering the data "out of order," what happens when you enter the information "in order," from top to bottom on the screen? Does the search work correctly then? Just to add a data point to the discussion: GPSr: 60CSx Software version: 2.90 GPS SW version: 2.60 Maps loaded: City Navigator NA v7, US Topo Result of "Find Addresses" search: Normal, the same as when I bought the GPSr. On my machine, anyway, "Find Addresses" works correctly regardless of the order I enter the data. --Larry
  17. I just took a look at the manual for the Legend CX, and in the Specifications section (page 72), under Interfaces it gives only "Garmin Proprietary (USB)" as if that's your only option. Are you sure there isn't an option in the software that you need to change regarding the interface? --Larry
  18. You need to change this on the Interface page: Get to the Main Menu and select "Setup" From this screen, select "Interface" On this screen, under "Serial Data Format" make sure it reads "Garmin". (I'm basing these instructions on my 60CSx. Your GPSr may have different screens.) --Larry
  19. Are Micro and Mini SD cards one and the same or are they different beasts? For instance I only see Mini SD cards at Amazon (Which is where I would like to make a purchase). No, Micro and Mini SD cards are not the same (I found out the hard way myself ). Here's one MicroSD card from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000EEZCE...glance&n=172282 --Larry
  20. Here's what the "Find Addresses" screen looks like on my 60CSx (it most likely looks the same on the 60CX): --Larry
  21. I've been using Street Atlas USA, various versions, for more than 5 years and I don't know of any way to display that grid. To be honest, I always thought that grid was useful when I studied a paper map, but wouldn't be that relevant with an electronic version. Bottom line, I never missed the grid when using the PC version of the maps. --Larry
  22. Those 50 you see in the list are the 50 closest to your current location. Press the Menu button, then select "Find by Name". You should see all the waypoints, in alphabetical order (unless you're looking for a specific waypoint, just press the "Quit" button to get rid of the virtual keyboard you would use for searching). --Larry
  23. Most of the time I use WebUpdater. As far as I can tell from watching the process happen, the entire file is downloaded from the Web site, then validated somehow (maybe just a CRC check), after which the program actually updates the GPSr firmware. It certainly doesn't appear to just suck the file off the Web site and funnel it to the GPSr simultaneously, that would be a recipe for disaster. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe Webupdater pays any attention to beta versions of the updates. In other words, if you want to try a beta version you'll need to manually download the updater application from the Garmin Web site and run the application. --Larry
  24. I have a Garmin 60CSx (loaded with City Navigator North America v7) as my GPSr, and DeLorme Street Atlas USA 2006 as my PC mapping software. If I create a route on the 60CSx using the Routes function from the Main Menu, I can then download and view the route in Street Atlas USA using that program's GPS Exchange Wizard. It does come in very handy for checking where the GPSr thinks you should be going. --Larry
