  1. I just picked up this unit at a steal of a deal price at Radio Shack (150 CDN), but I have some questions about it. The basemaps for Canada that come with it are very very basic. There are only Highways and the Citys. The clerk at Radio told me that this unit did not have Canada maps included but that there were US Maps. When you scroll down to US there are highways and there are also lakes and parks. Is this common in every explorist? I thought that the 210 model had better canadian basemaps, if I recall and that it included sufficient information to find out where you were. Should I be looking at a 210 model instead? Also, a while back I remeber looking at a site with free user created maps. Does anyone have the link to this?

  2. The main reason I was considering the Rino was for the external antenna. However, I decided to go with a Magellan eXplorist 200 for the price, durability, and maps at the $100 level. I've read good things about it and I hope it was a good decision.

I have a rino and find it does get excellent reception overall.

I am (pretty) sure you will be happy with the 200 though, only thing is that it does not have pc connectivity B) (though you can get some crazy 3rd party aftermarket kit thing i hear).

make sure you get the magellan rebate on it.

  3. I am wanting to get a all-in-one unit for all my GPS needs. I would like internet access, mapping, downloading, as well as the basic gps functions. Can you please help me with this?

    Thanks to all who respond.

eXplorist 210. Only like 150.00 for the unit plus Directroute (which gives it turn by turn) at tigergps.com. It has everything you want. What do you mean by internet access?

  4. I just want to make sure I understand this correctly. If I was to purchase directroute north america and place maps on my explorist 210 it would then have a turn-by-turn navigation capability and could give me directions?? Also if anyone knows would I be able to fit a city the size of say....Houston+the directions...on the explorist (it has 22mb of memory)??

  5. I am looking at getting a better map set for my eXplorist 210. The included US in the direct route package is a definite bonus and a wanted one. As the eXplorist 210 only has 22mb of memory it is essential that a whole city would be able to fit on the unit at a time. Which of the three (Direct Route vs. Topo vs. Streets and Destinations) would best suit my Canadian needs. I would like turn-by-turn directions also. Is this included in Streets and Destinations?? Too Many Choices!

  6. I am looking at how much software would be to purchase for my future unit-the explorist 210. which sets of maps would be better for a handheld unit- the Directroute North America or the TOPO USA set? I am a huge newb when it comes to this so i need some help. I want to be able to fit streets from a region ( a city) onto the explorist which has 22mb of memory.

  7. Well it looks like it has 22 megs of memory which will give you quite a bit. I had most of So Cal on a 16 meg

card when I was using my gold.

You will not be able to use mapsoure it will have to be magellan mapping

mapsource?? sorry i am definetley a newb and haven't check out all the maps. Is mapsource just a more detailed map set from magellan? I have heard that a TOPO would be the best for a handheld...any suggestions?

  8. The screen on the color unit gets pretty washed out in sun light, using the back light helps, but cuts down on battery time. also it is about 5 year old technology, It does have a great storage system with the SD card

The 210 has new technology and unless you need gobs of storage it should do you fine. :)

The only problem is I would like to be able to place indvidual cities on there (probably from mapsource topo) would the 210 have enough memory?

  9. For anyone who has use either an etrex legend or an explorist 210 or both, how are the basempas on both units. I have heard that the explorist has very basic basemaps but have not heard anything about the etrex. Also, how much of a purchased Mapsource Canada TOPO would fit on the etrex?(8mb of memory) Does anyone have signal problems with the Legend??? AHHH i can't decide which of these to get....

  10. Hello Everyone. I have done some brief looking around the forums for a topic similar to this but had little sucess so I wanted to start one again. Could everyone please tell me their recommended unit for a GPS starter. The unit must require mapping and some decent base maps. I looked at the explorist 210, liked it very much, and had heard nothing but good things about it except that the base maps weren't very good. thanks!

  11. I am looking at picking up a GPS unit this summer and after some light research this definetley seems to be the best bang for the buck. It has a slew of features and includes Mapping which is a must. I wanted to you what previous or current users of this product think of it.
