Why are the electronic compasses so bad?
pigpen4x4 replied to Goldom & Gardenia's topic in GPS technology and devices
Goldom & Gardenia, Your last post made me wonder if the E/C is turned on? I have not dug real deep into my Vista HCx, but on my 60CSx, it can be turned off in the menus. Good Luck! PP -
Why are the electronic compasses so bad?
pigpen4x4 replied to Goldom & Gardenia's topic in GPS technology and devices
I feel the E/C is for pointing to the waypoint, and little else. And mine (both a 60CSx and a Vista HCx) do this quite well. When I need a compass I pull one out. Interstingly, early on, I went deep into a very hilly forest off a trail without marking a waypoint. I knew only that I was heading west using my original Vista, but following it back east with the E/C, I got right back to the main trail. Now, I HOPE I know better. -
It's so dry here that may take a while! But I had one before (stolen during my truck break in) and liked it enough to buy another. I put my cell and PDA in it when I am going into or on water. And they lock closed as described above, you really can fill them with air and hold them under water, no bubbles! Even as they age. PP.

Wanted USB PDA ...cheap cheap cheap
pigpen4x4 replied to WeatherednBoston's topic in GPS technology and devices
I use a Zire 31, (color)and am real pleased with it. Yes, sometimes I do have to create shade in direct sunlight, but I usually work it out. Got it cheap too. Same USB cable as my GPSr's. As far as the Ebay thing, bid what you are willing to pay and walk away from it. If you win great, if not oh well. The idiot snippers usually only do small increments, so if you bid to win you usually will. Unless it goes over value. If you Cache early or late, you have should have a flashlight with you so do you really need a backlight? Hmmmm. I have bought a couple of PDA's from The Battons, trying different ones, and they are good people. Watch for his postings and you will not regret it. PP -
Will an ammo can stay water tight while submerged?

I have been considering this as well, and have also thought about a Otter Box. PP -
Questions about Garmin Vista HCx Accuracy
pigpen4x4 replied to Xenox's topic in GPS technology and devices
I've been a proponent of the Vista HCx since I got one and was very pleased with it. Until I set out a new hide this weekend. I always mark, average (a lot) the have the GPS walk me back to it. The Vista HCx would never get me "there". Always at least 20' difference. This was very frustrating to me, so I got out the 60CSx, let it settle, and went through it again. Bingo, the results I'm used to. I'm not knocking the HCx, yet. But I will be looking into what I can do to make it better. PP4x4 -
I'll bite if it's still available PP

"I'm playing a game with my GPS". If they show intrest, I continue. If not, we part ways. PP

I've used my Vista HCx along side my 60CSx and I like it a lot. Biggest difference is the case, and since you are used to the Etrex, you should be real happy with it. PP

I have both, and will say you will be very happy with either one. PP

Need some advice for a GPS for my car...
pigpen4x4 replied to ILBandit's topic in GPS technology and devices
I got 2 of the Mio C320 at Radio Shack on Black Friday for 149 Ea. I'm still putting it through the paces, but so far it seems to do just fine. -
Should I Buy a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx?
pigpen4x4 replied to smsader's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have a 60CSx and just bought a Vista HCx and my prefrence is (slightly) the 60. Maybe I'm just more used to it, and there are some things I like about the Vista better. "Should I Buy a Garmin eTrex Vista HCx?" Yup. PP -
^What he said.^

I too now own both a 60CSx and a Vista HCx. In MY opinion, neither unit is superior. I like the buttons on the 60 better, I like the size and using the click stick for inputing data on the Vista. Garmin has run rebates before, I don't think it shows the end of the line. They probably will update it or replace it sometime though. I have a solution. Buy it now, send it to me (for Mama) and I will send it to you in 6 months! PP

I feel for ya, as I recently had a break in also. Garmin and Fuji (camera) told me to provide them the respective serial numbers, and they would get it back to if it ever went in for service. Filing a small claim on the insurance is never a good idea. You can veify this with many consumer groups who can explain it much better than I can. I am really considering installing a strong box in the floor of my truck and van, but I wonder if in time I would really use it. PP

If I came across this as a final or a single, I would smile and comment in my log on your creativity and work for this hide. I hope you find a great place to hide it. PP

I can't answer your question directly, but I can relate my selection process. 1st unit. I wanted enough memory to hold plenty of waypoints, a data cable, and an electronic compass. I know there is some disagreement on this point, but I like it. The Vista was it. The legend is good too, minus the E. compass. 2nd unit. All of the above, plus high sensitivity, mapping, color, USB cable. GPSmap 60CSx. Meow. Cx deletes the E. compass. Now, I have just received a new Vista HCx. I think I'm gonna like this a lot. Got it for $231, so a right fair price, too. If price is your main factor, there are boo-coodles of the yellow Etrex's running around. Yea, there may be too many choices, but decide what is important to you and get one. There are others as well, but I know less than nothing about them. I can say the service I have received from Garmin has been top notch. PP

Did they lose their PDA as well? (assuming the used one) If so, I have a M500 they can have. PP

Geocaching saves my house from trick or treaters

9mm Thats funny. C. -
I was origianlly going to comment on this beaten old complaint, but others got to it first. I will say, if you ever try a PM, you won't stop as long as you maintain your interest in GeoCaching. The benifits are just great. I do make all of mine PMOC's. And I will continue to do so. I am convinced it improves the saftey of the cache, and it gives something back to this hobby. I can't wait till I get 5k finds. Maybe someone will sponsor me for a PLMOC. It is still 5k, right?

Looking to upgrade for under $300
pigpen4x4 replied to ne_ms_listings's topic in GPS technology and devices
If you go a few bucks more (OK, a little more than just a few ) you can get into a Vista HCx and CN. I am thinking about one of these as a back up to my 60CSx, which I really like. For a few dollars less, you could get one without the electronic compass, (Legend) since you probably don't have one now. But I guess I'm too spoiled to do without one. For full disclosure, other companies make them as well, but I know less than nothing about them. PP4x4 -
I've got three. Piglet 1, Piglet 2 and Piglet 3.
