  1. Alright. So, if I go back to being a Premium Member, I can download individual caches in GPX format and not have to do the PQ if I didn't want to, correct? (I know PQs are easier, but like I said, I'm trying something specific and different)
  2. How do I download the GPX file for just ONE cache? Is GPX only available to Premium memberships, or is a GPX basically the file that is used for PQs? Like a PQ of 500 caches is downloaded as one GPX file? I am a trying a few random things with the site and also the GPS that I am using, and was wanting to download the cache information. Seems like the only option that I have to download load the information is through the LOC file. The button for GPX is subdued. Any comments on why that is?
  3. I'll for sure take THAT recommendation ;-) Thanks everyone for all of the input.
  4. Yea, I believe that I am going to focus on getting a higher end GPS (than the Rino110 and Explorist GC that I have) without the radio. I'll just leave the 110s for the kiddos to use and play with while camping. Thanks for the recommendation.
  5. Thanks everyone. Was able to mess around with both devices extensively this weekend and figured out how to get it done on the Rino (with the procedure above), and will try Gitchee-Gummee's advice for the GC sometime in the coming days. Right now downloading the new software for the GC.
  6. Lol wow... I really need to make sure that I am not on my computer right when I take my Ambien haha. My spelling and grammar go WAY out the window lol. Thanks for the reply. I went camping this weekend and was able to really sit down and focus on using all the options on both GPS devices. While I did have fun with both of them (geocaching and just hiking around and tracking everything), I did decide that I would really like to upgrade to something higher end. I also came up with some other questions that I will post in a different thread. One thing I did notice is that I REALLY enjoyed the practial use of the radios in the Rinos. Can you recommend (or know of) any specific GPS that has the same kind of radio usage, but that is higher end for the GPS usage (for caching and other uses)? Do the radios have the ability of operating at further distances from each other if you jump up to something like the 130 or even the 655t?
  7. Ah, right on. Somone had told me that folks volunteer to go check out new caches to make sure they are up to standard and all that. Lol I had the thought about what about those places that are WAY out in the middle of nowhere and how it would be pretty difficult to go and check on each and every newly placed cache. And well, I've for sure come across a couple of those groups of folks that "if you ask, you will never get in" rumors surrounding them lol. I don't think I need another one of those to add to fun resume lol. Thanks everyone for the replies! Happy caching.
  8. How would I be abe to become one of those volunteers that goes out and inspects new caches to make sure that they are there and are up to "code"? Or what ever else needs to be done,
  9. I have the Magellan eXplorist GC and two of the Garmin Rino 110s. I have some questions: In your experiene, which works best for geocaching its self? Does the Magellan Rino 110 offer the "paperless" geocaching? If not the110 model, but what about the120-130 models? I am very considerng giving my GC to one of the kiddos to use and I go out and get me an eXplort 610, or maybe 710. Mistake, or good choice? If I do get the 610, how much differene in perormance and accurraccy would actually notice? Thanksfor all of your input. Any amount is greatly appreceated, Also, recommendatoins for other brands or models woul be greatly appreciated a well. Stedman
  10. Okay. Thanks for the extra info. I about to deparat on a multiple day camping trip wiht the family and will try to make use of those sugesstions. I'll post the results when I get baack. Thanks.
  11. Okay, I don't mean to necro and older thread, and hopefully I will be able to get an answer for this next question before I need to use it tomorrow. I haven't tried the recommendations above yet, but I was wondering if there is not a way to just put in a "go to" destination procedure. For example, I am standing at point A, and I need to get to point B and I have the coordinates for that. Instead of saving a waypoint for point A, and then go in and edit the coordinates info to be the coordinates for point B, is there a way that I can hit a "go to" option and enter in the coordinates of where I want to go? Sort of like putting in a destination address on a car GPS? What I am using it for is not caching, and I am just curious if there is a way of getting around saving waypoints. If there isn't, I'll just use the prescribed instructions above. Thanks!
  12. All GPSr units (I believe) are capable of setting a waypoint. They were doing that before geocaching came along.... GC: from the Menu > highlight "New Waypoint" > [Enter] > [save] -- this maneuver "marks" your position as a waypoint. You may alter those coordinates to any that you so desire (don't forget to [save] again, if you do). You should also be able to name that particular waypoint upon creation, otherwise the GPSr will assign a name (usually numbers). Rino: the procedure may be a little different, but simply "mark" your current position and alter name/coordinates as needed. It is the same, except that on earlier Garmins, you usually just scroll up to the coordinates/name and change them w/o going through a menu. Early Garmin units are very restrictive (short) in the waypoint name field. So, basically what you are saying is create a waypoint right there where I am standing, and then go in and edit the waypoint information such as the coordinates to be the coordinates of where I am wanting to go. Then, it basically places the waypoint at the place I am wanting to go and it will then help navigate me to get to that point? Thanks so far.
  13. I have both the Magellan Explorist GC and the Garmin Rino 110. I am wanting to know how to manually enter in GPS coordinates on both devices. With the GC, I know how to do the "paperless" geocaching and putting in pocket queries and all that, but what if I have the coordinates of a location that is NOT a geocache? Like, how can I manually enter those coordinates into the GC and have it navigate me there? Is that possible with the GC? Also, the same question applies to the Rino 110. Really would like to use both of those in the same manner. Thanks!
  14. I have a Premium membership with Geochaching.com and I also have Google Earth on my computer. I have been seeing some stuff online about seeing caches (caches along a route and caches I have found really interested me) on Google Earth. Can someone tell me a step by step process of how to do all of this? Thanks
  15. What are the proper steps to putting a PQ onto a Magellan eXplorist GC? I was able to get it working this weekend, but did not know if I was doing it correctly. Here is what I did: 1- Created the PQ and saved it to my computer (extracted the compressed file, which had a folder for geocaches and a folder for waypoints I believe). 2- Hooked up GPS to computer and opened up the GPS as if it were a thumbdrive or external hard drive. 3- In the folder for caches, I copy and pasted the caches folder that was downloaded/extracted. In the waypoints folder, I did the same with the waypoints folder that was downloaded/extracted. 4- Closed out and unhooked the GPS. This seemed to work fine as I was able to use the GPS and successfully find caches this weekend. Was just wondering, was there a different way (and more official) to do it? I am also wanting to know if there is a way to put more than one PQ onto the GPS and be able to switch back and forth without losing any of the information that is saved/tracked for either of the PQs. Basically, I did a PQ for my home area and will work on it over time, but don't want to lose any of that information. I am also wanting to do a PQ for an upcoming trip and use the GPS for that, but again, I don't want to have to delete the PQ info for my home area. When I created the PQ, I clicked the box for it to have the PQ name in the filename, but I didn't see it anywhere on my GPS. Was this because of the method I used to put the PQ on the GPS? If I did it another way, would I be able to two PQs on my GPS and switch between the two when I am in different areas? Another PQ question: When I created the PQ, I didn't go through and select a lot of stuff to include or exclude. I was thinking that since I already have some Finds and Not Finds logged on the website, it would label those caches on my PQ/GPS. But, when I started using the GPS with the PQ on it, none of my logged information like Finds that I had already made were on there. I mean, caches that I had already found weren't labled as found. Is there no way to get the PQ to do that, or is this also probably a result of the method I used to load the PQ onto the GPS? Lol sorry for all the questions at once haha.
  16. Lol, I guess that makes pretty good sense. I guess I just gotta figure out how to use the PQ stuff lol.
  17. So, basically if I am using the iPhone/app and geocaching out in a place that I do have service, I don't really need the PQs since I am able to access everything online through my phone? Also, when I do finally decide on a GPS device, can the PQs be downloaded to it somehow (if it has the paperless geocaching feature)?
  18. I also had someone delete a log that I had made. When they do this, does this take away from your total find? LIke, if I had 16 finds before the CO makes the deletion, will I have only 15 logs afterward? Or does it just delete the message part of the log that I typed?
  19. Pretty sure that I am going to go with the Premium Member option in the next day or two. I just wanted to know from users what the real difference is between that and being just a basic member. Yes, I know there is a page on the site that shows what "all you get" if you become a member. But that is usually a sell point and I am wanting to know from others if it is worth it or not. Like, do you actually use all those other premium options. How much would my geocaching world change if I did go with those premium options. Any thoughts and answers are appreciated! Thanks ya'll.
  20. So, I am starting to look to buy a GPS device to go geocaching.. FIgured I would start this thread and kind of keep it running with particular questions that I have till I hopefully figure out what I want and go get it. I have to admit, the other threads that I have come across so far, and the GPS device section in the Groundspeak store really wasn't too much help for me to find the unit that I would want and could use at my level and for going forward. So, first question... So, assume that I am in Cabela's or some other outfitter store and in the section of GPSs. Should I be taking a look at just hiking GPSs, or should I be looking for GPSs that have some sort of feature on the box that boasts about its geocaching ability?
  21. I finnally had a little time to get on here and look around a little more and figured it out. There was no way that it was getting done using my IE, so I went over and tried to use my Google Chrome browser and it works totally fine now...lol Thanks everyone!
  22. So, I'm still pretty new to this whole gig, and still haven't jumped in and gotten an actual GPS device (I just the app on my iPhone 4s). If I go looking for the Garmin 60SCx like you mentioned, what else should I look for on he box features to help me decide to get that one? I'm really excited to finally go out and get a handheld GPS, but at the same time I want to make sure that I am getting a GPS that for sure incorporates the geocaching (stuff from Groundspeak if possible). These forums obviously offers a ton of information when it comes to different GPS devices as everyone has their own opinion. I guess it kinda makes it hard with all the different opinions stacked all over the place lol.
  23. Thank you. Yea, so far I have been carrying them with me to other caches that I have found, but they were caches that were too small for me to put the trackable into, so I just did the "Visited" thing to track that the trackables were there. I have been going every day or two around here to places that the trackables haven't been, and still no change in being able to find a larger sized container even though on the app I believe that it shows a normal or large containre, but I find a nano sitting there. Oh well... lol I will be going down to Galveston, TX this for the whole weekend in a day or two. Neither of the trackables have been down there yet, so pretty excited to drop them off there.
  24. Been going through this caching thing well so far, but was considering jumping on to this thing that I keep hearing referred to as "pocket query"s. Since I have decided to go ahead and be a Premium Member starting int he next couple of days, I have a couple of questions about that real quick. 1- What exactly is a pocket query? And what does it do or what is it used for? 2- Can you use the pocket queries with the iPhone 4S app? If so, can you give me a step by step process of how to use it and what it will do on my my phone app? 3- Since I am currently using the app on my iPhone to conduct all of my geocaching operations, is pocket queries anything that I would really need at all? Or well it work well together? Thank ya'll.
  25. I seem to can't find the app for the iPad. Have looked a few times, but I can't find one from Groundspeak (or whatever the one I use on my iPhone)....
