  1. I use the following - about on an equal basis.. 1. MapSource - Good because it provides the maps that download into the 76. Bad because the maps are not really topo maps..but pretty close 2. NGTopo - Good because the maps are real topo maps. Bad because you can't download them to the 76 3. OziExplorer - Good because you can scan anything that closely resembles a map and use that. Even better because a large library of pre-scaned, pre-registered maps is becoming available. Bad... hummmm... there is the shareware thingie, but once the license is installed it is pretty feature rich. all IMHO... >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!

  6. There are a lot of folks hanging around here that claim to have bagged their 1st 100 without ever using a GPS, or GPSr, or whatever they call them thingies. >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!

  8. http://www.geocaching.com/mark/nearest.asp?lat_ns=N&lat_h=39&lat_mmss=22.365&long_ew=W&long_h=116&long_mmss=37.545 gives a list the bench marks in the area. None plot to the area marked on the map. The stamp looks to be "32 JPH" but it returns nothing on a search at http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/datasheet.html >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  9. You know ... you are making great headway toward the cache... you stop ... and the GPSr keeps moving! Question: how can you be lost inside a circle with a 6 meter radius? >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  10. USB will push data an a very high rate... and the USB / RS232 converters are good to the limit of a UART. The limiting factor here is what the GPSr can do. I have a Compaq Presario 2700 Laptop ..... and it ain't got no serial ports. So, for me, this cable is the only way I am EVER going to get the GPS and the Laptop to talk. At $13 ... this is a great deal >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  11. I just checked in at the benchmarks page to see how the numbers were doing... and noticed that the criteria I had listing for sending in a NGS report were listed there pretty much as I wrote them. 14. I think you need to do an "open" on the .asp. The older versions of IE require that you do an "open" on the .asp .. then you are rewarded with the .loc file I think NS runs the same way >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  15. I have moved the TOPO! maps that I use often onto the CD... Result is a HUGE speed difference going between maps. Very jerky running from CD and very smooth running from HD. >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  16. Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach (or in this case write a book) But seriously folks... How could this guy possibly experience all the diversity of geocaching? He'd have to do it for years and years... and the book would never get written. I greatly admire anyone that can actually write a book.. But "writer", $99 for a yellow eTrex is not a lot of money to invest in "getting the facts straight" about the basic mechanics of the game. Get out there and find a few caches, then collect you stories and write the book. If a "real" geocacher picks up your book and finds some basic technical flaws... well... I do not predict good reviews. Just my $.02 - posted IMHO >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  17. How did this happen? I know that Jeremy was talking about talking to them... [This message was edited by Raouljan on November 05, 2002 at 03:25 AM.]
  18. There are glaring differences between the detail provided on the MapSource Topo and NG Topo maps. NG Topos provide a much better graphic of the areas as these are scanned USGS maps. MapSource Topos have a lot more "POI" data, but lack a lot of the detail found on the NG series. However, MapSource is the only product that will download a map to your GPSr. Soooooo.... you really need both packages unless you want to get all your maps from someplace like lostoutdoors. >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
  19. BM1031'DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1954 (HSC) BM1031'THE STATION IS LOCATED ABOUT 5 MILES NORTHWEST OF WARRENTON, BM1031'11 MILES SOUTHEAST OF GIDDINGS, 7 MILES EAST OF WARDA AND BM1031'1.8 MILES NORTHEAST OF NECHANITZ. IT IS IN THE NORTHWEST BM1031'CORNER OF A CHURCH YARD AND 378 FEET NORTHWEST OF A BM1031'T-INTERSECTION AT THE SOUTHEAST CORNER OF THE CHURCH YARD. BM1031'THE MARK IS ON PROPERTY OWNED BY THE LUTHERAN CHURCH. Does that sound close? >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!

  22. The eTrex series wants 3.5 volts and has (I think) no internal over-voltage protection. Sooo... if the voltage regulator in the car adapter goes out there is a good chance that the car's 12 volts is going to make to to the GPSr, which would not be a good thing. However.... I have never heard of this happening. That said... using a 3rd party power converter may well void the warantee on the GPSr. However.... you can always say that you were using a Garmin part, no mater what you are using. If you want to play it safe... buy from Garmin. >Personally Responsible for the Recovery of .00244% of the Benchmark Database!<--watch this number!
