There are plenty of places you can purchase all sorts of cool hand carved walking sticks, but I would prefer to make my own because they never seem to be the right size for me (I am tall). SO....does anyone out there have any ideas, suggestions or knowledge on how to go about obtaining a good stick for walking stick purposes and any knowledge of how to preserve them. Types of wood, sealant to use if any? That type of stuff. Thanks! Geo http://www.geopolitan.net/geotrex Kathy in WV

  3. Although we just purchased our first GPS today and haven't done any geocaching yet I've read lots of posts here and can't help but say a couple of things about rating a cache: 1) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! --Just finding a cache, no matter what's in it and being able to report the find would be beauty to me! I wouldn't care if there's just a log book there! 2) One man's trash is another man's treasure! --I might like things like NASCAR related objects, whereas my husband would think them junk. You might like things that relate to golf, whereas I'd think that junk! But again, just finding a cache would make my day! So who cares what's there? The fun is in the seek & find..........just like Easter egg hunting but on a larger scale! Kathy in WV Kathy in WV

  5. Since I haven't even held the GPS in my hand yet I don't know Jack S about them but I'd say if someone has one and is lost that is really a bad thing!! I can't wait to try mine out but darn it, we have to go to a wedding this evening! If not we'd hit the road as there are a few caches within an hour of us. Kathy in WV quote:Originally posted by PCGeekz:I'm very new to geocaching. We have a Magellan Map 330, we've had it for quite awhile and used it for helping us while on vacations to find our way. Recently on our local TV newscast, I learned about geocaching. I'm very excited! My family and I want to try it and we were going to give it a try today until we actually set out to do it and didn't do a lot of research on how to use waypoints. Anyone out there that has a Magellan map 330 that can help me... I was looking at a particular cache and I don't understand how to use the waypoints that are 6 characters long that use letters and numbers. How do I go about using them with a map 330? Is it possible to use them? If possible, can you give me step by step instructions and if not can you tell me how I do use what’s listed on the web pages that give the North and West numbers. I'm so lost Thanx!! Kathy in WV

  9. I just bought our first GPS today......Magellen Map 330X and it has MapSend software with it. Don't tell me I'm not going to be able to use it for geocaching, which I really wanted to get into. If I have to enter a lot of stuff manually Sam's will be getting it back! I don't have time for that!! Kathy in WV quote:Originally posted by GeoCraig:I just got a Magellan SporTrak Pro with the MapSendTopo map software. 10. Well, after a couple of months of "listening" to everyone here, studying different units at the websites, looking in the stores, etc. today I finally made the decision, took the plunge and bought our first GPS. I was at a local Wal-mart and almost bought the Garmin eTrex Legend till the guy at the counter said it didn't come with a PC cable. Well, what good is that?? He said none of the GPS they sell do.....Garmin, Lowrance or Magellan!! Go figure. So we went to Sam's Club and they had the Magellan Map 330X which came with MapSend Streets software, PC cable [wish it was USB.....such a hassle getting to the back of my CPU to plug in a 9-pin when I have 2 USB ports right here on the back of my keyboard!!] vehicle mount and 12 volt cable for $199.97. I think that was a pretty good buy. So..........I've not heard anybody mention this particular Magellan unit. Anybody out there have one? If so, what do you think?? Now, if the weather would cool off to where we could stand to be outside for more than two minutes!! Kathy in WV Kathy in WV

  15. Yeah, I noticed how the subjects kind of go awry here! I posted a question asking opinions of the best GPS to get and every now and then go to it to see if anyone has added any more suggestions. They've made it so off topic that no one even knows what I asked anymore and I don't feel like looking through all the stuff there to see if there are any suggestions for me! But let me tell ya about that husband of yours. When you are married 26 years [like your mom & dad have been -- and like my hubby & I have been] he won't be a bit different. He'll still be like a little kid. MEN!! They never grow up. But just think.....if your dad was looking under rocks now for you you'd have to be a geocache or he wouldn't find you!! Kathy in WV quote:Originally posted by Mommy#1:I have noticed that we need a post just for off the topic conversations. Between my dad "Majicman" and all his buddies. I don't know who is worse about changing the topic or messing up the conversation string. Well here we have it Ladies and Gent's here's the "OFF THE TOPIC ROOM!" Now who wants to start off first? I think I will! I think everyone knows by now that Majicman and I (Mommy#1) are related. I'm sorry to say, but we are. And it all started off like this: He says that he was out driving one day and found a very unusual rock. So he stopped to take a look and found me under it. So he picked me up and took me home cuz he wanted to give me a loving home to grow up in, and he felt sorry for me. But the other funny thing is my mom tells me that she found him under the same rock and decided to take him home because she felt sorry for him. I guess being married for 26 years she got use to him and she often says to him that no one else would take him. I have only been married for 3 years so I don't know what it's like yet. My husband acts like a child anyway so I guess he's no different from my father. Mommy#1 Meet STITCH, GEOSTITCH "there's one in every family". Kathy in WV

  17. While doing some research on Magellan GPS's [still trying to decide what to get for our first GPS] I noticed a blurb on their website about a GPS Road Rally. I've participated in a few road rallies [not to mention poker rides on the back of my hubby's bike] and they are a lot of fun. I'd imagine, for geo-cachers, one involving the use of the GPS would be even better! Here's the link to the article [hope I'm not breaking any rules by posting a link here??] http://www.magellangps.com/en/news/releases/viewRelease.asp?id=202 Kathy in WV Kathy in WV
  18. Has anyone tried any of the SporTrak Series GPS's? We're still trying to decide on what our first GPS will be. With my husband's experience as a land surveyor [but not using GPS for doing it] he is familiar with the concept. We know we want a unit with a mapping feature and also that we want one we can use for travelling [downloading routes, etc. for trip]. The SporTrak series looks pretty good with SR pricing from $170-$300 [on Magellan's website] but would like to hear some geocaching experiences with them. Kathy in WV Kathy in WV
  19. Mike-- I hadn't noticed the county thing till you said something!! Wonder why it does that? What amazes me is people who put a city but no state. I mean, GIVE ME A BREAK!! If I put Princeton some would immediately think NJ........but I bet there's a Princeton in almost every state and the same for most every other city in the US [and even some cities with the same names in other countries, too!....ie: Bristol/VA/TN and in England, I do believe!!] And once we finally decide on a GPS and get into geocaching you can expect an email regarding those Kanawha county caches! Thanks for the offer. 20. No, my husband used to hunt but doesn't anymore. He lost his hunting spot [a private farm] and doesn't care to risk public hunting......too many crazies out there. Besides, he's lost the desire to hunt with a gun, much preferring the camera now. We do know that we want a unit with the mapping feature and compass for sure. Kathy in WV quote:Originally posted by Idaho Ron:If he does I would recommend the Etrex Camo I have one. The reason is, the camo unit has sun rise and sunset info. This is handy for hunting regulations that read from sunrise to sunset. It has a page for the best times for hunting and fishing but I don't use that. Any time is the best time for me! Other than that I think the Yellow and the camo are the same. The camo unit runs 129 at wal mart. Neither of these units have a PC cord. YOu will have to buy one. They cost between 15 and 35 dollars depending were you get them. But if I were to get another GPS it would be the venture. By the time you get a PC cord for the Camo unit you will pay between 145.00 and 165.00 The venture HAS a cable and can do everything the camo unit can and the some. This unit is 150 to 170.00 Ron

  22. Thanks for your replies. After missing a couple of steps and taking a fall-landing on my knees on a marble floor about 3 years ago going down hill or down steps is usually very painful for me. Like someone here said, the WV hills are majestic and grand and level ground is not easy to find. I'm hoping for more caches close to the roadways. If not I'll travel with hubby, doing the navigation and let him do the walking. Being a highway surveyor by trade he's used to it! Now to decide which GPS we want to invest in then getting on with it. I'm sure Pipestem State Park will be the first spot we hit! Kathy in WV

  24. Okay, so now that I've read everyone's advice I go to Wal-Mart and look around. The yellow eTrex is $120 but no mapping & husband [who is a surveyor by trade] says he wants mapping so that one is out. Then I notice the blue eTrex that has mapping......but it's not waterproof.....that's out [i think it was $148]. They have a Magellen Meridian and a Lowrance something or other that both have mapping and are both $220. I like the Meridian but I think the PC cable requires a 9-pin serial port and my computer only has one and it's taken up by my PC cord to my Rand McNally Trip thingy. Why, oh why, don't they have USB!! Is there one out there with a USB PC cable that anyone knows of?
