  1. My worst would have to be when I was a bit off the beaten path. Got out of my vehicle with my GPS'r and shut the door only to see my key in the ignition, my cell phone and wallet on the seat, and the doors all locked. No hide-a-key for entry. Noticed a nice piece of stout chain on the ground, picked it up and one good swing later the front passenger window was gone. Drove home in the rain and ordered a new piece of glass the next day. At least I already had the experience of replacing the window regulator motor, so the glass replacement was easy enough. I can assure you that adventure won't happen to me again!

  2. Since I already had been using my Palm Tungsten E2 for a lot of other tasks I decided to use it for geocaching PQ's as well. The software I use is GPX Spinner and Plucker. Of course this unit is actually more than what you really need to get the job done. It is nice to have graphics and images from the cache pages show up in thousands of colors but the color screen is difficult to read in bright sunlight.

  3. I have several new caches planned for a park that has previously been off-limits to caching. I have placed a decent FTF prize in each one. Will I be considered a jerk if I publish the caches one at a time, so that the same person doesn't grab all of the FTFs? Just want to make these caches as much fun for everyone, but don't want folks to get a negative impression, either.

    Thanks for any opinions.

I find that good puzzle caches help level the playing field when it comes to FTF's. Not all of the FTF Hounds solve all of the puzzles first. This gives the rest of us that can't get out at a moments notice a chance to still compete in the FTF race.

  4. I think that just about everywhere there is geocaching there are FTF Hounds. Some of them seem to be able go out searching 24/7/365. For the rest of us worker bees that like to get a few FTF's, I feel the puzzle cache helps level the playing field. It gives the 40 hour work week cacher a chance to be the first to figure out a puzzle and make the find.

I can see the problem of coordinates getting sucked up due to the locations on multis. I live out in a desert community and there is an incredible amount of open land for cache locations so it hasn't been much of an issue here.

I do get frustrated trying to figure out some of those puzzles, but I also enjoy it when I succeed. I have about 25 of them solved right now. I just need to get the time to head out of town and make the finds.

  5. The Garmin - "Send to GPS" feature is great for 1 or 2 quick caches you want to load up. However, for any serious amount of caches it is slow and not real useful. I use GSAk and some of the "smart" naming in there to transfer caches for anything other than a quick 1 or 2 load.

I have used Easy GPS before. But have decided to get GSAK. It is the cat's meow. Very versatile. Plenty of options for displaying and manipulating records. Well worth the price!

  6. I updated the software on my Garmin Etrex Legend CX to Version 2.80 yesterday. Began downloading caches using the the Garmin Communicator on the web pages. Well, now it downloads the caches as generic waypoints (with a flag icon) and doesn't include the notes, which is usually the cache name. Now I am back to manual entry of the notes and changing the icons (like on my Legend). I think Garmin's programmers seem to going backwards instead of forward with their updates.
