  1. What, you don't like the smart people who tried to help already? Not sure why you think you can only have 4 maps. I have many more than that already, as shown in the screen shots below: This is my Oregon 550's Garmin directory with 3 map.img files: This is the Micro SD card including 5 maps I've named appropriately: There is some duplication in the maps, but it does not seem to cause any issues. And these are screen shots of the maps listed on the Oregon when the img files above are loaded. As you can see there are 6 map products listed.
  2. When you "dump them directly", were they still in zip format or did you copy the uncompressed files? Also, they need to be in the \garmin\gpx folder, either on the gps or the Micro Sd card. They won't be found if they are not in the right folder.
  3. Better at what? General detailed navigation in the pick-up truck. I drive a lot of rural roads during hunting season and I like to see as much map details as possible like road labels, gas stations, etc.... Quick sat acquisitions is also a big plus. Sometimes I get stuck in the back country in bad snowy conditions and I need to browse the map for a options and side roads. That is why road labeling is important. In other words, If you only had one GPS strapped to your dash in the back country, what is THE best do it all Nuvi product. The one which would last longest when you need to abandon your truck and hike for help. IOW, neither of those alternatives.
  4. Once the file is uploaded to the gps, find it using Explorer and rename it from gmapsupp.img to louisiana.img or Mississippi.img then load the second one. It's overwriting the maps each time you upload, so that's why you need to rename the map.
  5. Wow, one wonders what Garmin tests before releasing a firmware sometimes. Thanks for sharing that. I consider this an advantage - if I'm using the 295 to play a podcast or music while walking, I'd be fairly annoyed if it didn't stay on. The part that I bolded is what I'm worried about. Say I turn off the car engine and walk off, thinking the unit will power itself off, it merrily continues to play my music until I return. If I need to use it as a walking GPS at that point, it may already be out of battery power. You're not saying this is the only gps you carry at any given time? I've usually got at least two with me.
  6. 60 days, I think it was. I have an question..When you update the map to the 2011 version and go to 'mapsource" is it supposed to show up?If so where is it and how do I get it to show? No, it doesn't show up in Mapsource at all. If you have your 295W connected to the computer, and you use BaseCamp, it sees the version installed on the gps. This map update is never installed on the computer. When I updated my maps, I had the option to install to my device and to my computer. 2011.3 does show in Mapsource. Interesting - I was never offered the option. Maybe I should go an download the map update again and see if I can install to the computer as well. Garmin gives you a year to download the file as often as you want.

Thank You,Sir...I can import my poi's to city select nt america v7 in mapsource and they show up on that map ,also,my pictures show up that are geo tagged when I import from the 295w. You should try BaseCamp too. It's got some interesting features, especially the one where it sees the maps on your gps. And the Geotagged images show up nicely too.

  10. Each PQ can only hold a maximum of 1000 caches, so you can't expect more in any one file. But if you create multiple pocket queries with different parameters, you'll eventually end up with many more in your gps. Try centering other queries on a different point. Hello Dr Jeckyl, I do haev a eXplorist GC as well bought last dec. I had the 1.0V and I went to the Magellan web site to get the 1.4v. I upload the new version and I lost my data. Not a big deal cause I did not have too many (about 20 found) but now I have found 38 caches log on geocaching.com and my GPS state 52 found. How can I synchronize both. I wich to haev my GPS state 38 found as the true one. In the stats screen, it said 52 and 16 miles completed. Pretty weir. thank you for your help. Sorry, I know nothing about Magellan gps units - I'm a Garmin man, myself.
  11. I thought Garmin would fix any problem for $99. Not all models are $99, but they do have a fixed rate exchange service for most models. Here's where you figure out how much it'll cost: http://www8.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html I don't see the 450 on the list but I'm sure it'll be the same as the 400, at $99.
  12. There are ways to make the HCx approach paperless caching but it's nowhere near as easy as it is on the units which are made for paperless. Your old Legend is probably using the serial interface, which your Mac likely does not have. Some people have been able to make do with a serial/usb adaptor but you'd be better off trying to get something with a usb connector built in, if possible. All modern Garmin units have usb. The Dakota has a higher resolution touch screen, is faster, holds many more caches, is just a much more modern unit than any Legend. Don't get me wrong, I like the Legend, especially the HCx model, but it's not "paperless", and I rarely use mine now that I have the Oregon, the big brother to the Dakota.

  14. Don't forget the Dakota 20. It's not a lot more expensive than the Legend HCx, but much better, especially for paperless caching. And there's no reason to expect issues with your Mac. I have an iMac and I use it with all my Garmins which include 2 X Oregon 550s, a 62S a Legend HCx and a few others. Check out Garmin's Mac software here: http://www8.garmin.com/macosx/
  15. oh wow! I was expecting a nope limited to 1000 and thats it... Really want one now. Thanks Well I don't want to disappoint you so here's your "no" answer. You can load thousands of pois through PoiLoader, but still only 1000 Waypoints...
  16. Doesn't the iPad have Bluetooth? A bluetooth GPS dongle can't be that expensive. Besides I'm aiming at the iPad 2, supposed to have a mini-USB port, wouldn't that work? You'd still not be able to use Mapsource or BaseCamp since you can't install them on the iPad.
  17. Doesn't the iPad have Bluetooth? A bluetooth GPS dongle can't be that expensive. Besides I'm aiming at the iPad 2, supposed to have a mini-USB port, wouldn't that work? Why not get a netbook. Its cheaper and more powerful... I already have 2 Netbooks and they're good computers, but they are not iPads.
  18. I wonder if Jail Breaking the iPad might not give software developers access to the iPad camera connector's USB port? I have a camera connector/usb device and it does not allow access to very many other usb devices... but then my iPad is not "Jail Broken".
  19. No way you can do that currently. I have an iPad and it's awesome, but Garmin does not have a iPad app yet and Mapsource/Basecamp is not possible on it. Here's discussion on the Garmin forums relating to your question: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=8322
  20. I use a Mac and it works just fine. As painless as using a PC in all ways for me.
  21. What were you doing when it froze? Not saying it is your fault or anything - I've experienced my share of grief from buggy Garmin products. Some people think the initial page loading in the web browser is a lockup since it takes so long to appear, and even once the Garmin site has appeared, it takes minutes for the browser to respond, but that's just the feeble browser. If you let the browser load that initial page, then go to another less complicated page (like Geocaching.com) and make that page the default instead of the Garmin one, then the browser is far faster next time you use it. My lockups were not in the browser, though.
  22. For photos taken with a camera other than that in the 295W, I use RoboGeo. What I like about RoboGeo is that it can add the location information to the actual picture as well as the EXIF data. Apparently Google Earth will also tag photos but I've had mixed results using that method.
  23. There are many screens the 60C(S)x doesn't show by default. You may just need to configure the unit to show those screens you're missing.
  24. Thank you, I now have yet another reason not to upgrade, I love early adopters. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!! I don't mind being an early adopter, even when there are "issues". Garmin's always been good about fixing their software.
