  1. In my Oregon 550 it's in setup/time/Time Zone and has "Automatic" or a choice of locations.
  2. Interesting... The other thing I like with Bing maps is the ability to send a route directly to my gps through the MSNDirect receiver in the gps power supply in the car.
  3. This is as close as you're likely to get... https://forums.garmin.com/
  4. A gps will get its date from connecting to the satelites in the sky... have you turned it on outside, yet, and got a fix? I'm aware of that and yes I've had a sat fix. No date display on any page and no date data field that I can find. Well your initial post said you "were anxious to get it outdoors" so it was not obvious that you'd had a fix already. I figured from your stats that you probably knew, but still, you did ask the question.
  5. Ditto on the advice on getting an Oregon/Dakota/Colorado. Don't worry about signal strength rumors. But I would stay away from auction sites if you're buying a gps - there are deals out there but the real deals are few and far between, and Garmin tends to frown on auction site purchases. This is copied from the Warranty FAQ page on the Garmin site: Online Auction Purchases: Products purchased through online auctions are not eligible for warranty coverage. Online auction confirmations are not accepted for warranty verification. To obtain warranty service, an original or copy of the sales receipt from the original retailer is required. Garmin will not replace missing components from any package purchased through an online auction. end quote You'd be far better off to just look around and find the best price, and buy new.

  7. You should ask on the Cachemate site - he's really good at responding to this kind of question and who knows, he might even be in the process of piping it to Eris, so it can't hurt for you to ask, and for him to know there's a need.
  8. You're right - it is fun to keep track of this kind of info, then see it through Garmin Connect, etc.
  9. They already do - I have two right here. Will see if I can find the part number. I bought mine separately but here's a kit which includes the mount. Garmin Oregon Car Kit I have seen that kit in the pioture before. so if I were to buy this (abopve) and take the clip off the suction mount, attached to my Orego...it would pop into the NUVI mount/ball? Of course - it's completely compatible. I was able to buy the Oregon mount by itself, without the rest of the suction mount so I know it's sold separately. I can't find the part listed anywhere online so I looked into the file folder I keep here and found the original box the part was in. This is the description and part number: Auto mount P.N. 010-10851-20 The only place I can find that lists it online is the store where I bought my two in the first place - Le Baron, a Canadian Outdoors store. Good price too - $7.77 in their catalog (a pdf file).
  10. Yes. If you have routable maps installed Aren't Topo maps routable? I bought Topo Canada and there are POIs in there that don't exist in the current CN NT. Also, to elaborate on the original question: to route on road on the Oregon series you need to do a search, find what you're looking for, select Go To, then close that screen and go back to "Where To" and select "Recalculate On Road". I you don't do that, you're navigating st the crow flies.

  12. It is also widely claimed that the quad helix antenna on the GPSMap series is superior to the patch antenna on the Oregon. I don't know how the antenna on the Colorado compares - can't seem to find information on it. For geocaching paperless is the only way to go for me The Oregon's amazing - I can turn it on miles from where it was last used and within 30 seconds it's got a fix and knows exactly where it is.
  13. Nope - you need something more modern for that like a Colorado, Oregon or Dakota.
  14. No idea where the thread might be but it really depends on your gps: my Oregon has a text file you can edit while in mass storage mode, adding the owner's name, number and a reward message, and the 60/76 series has a text entry screen which is displayed on boot, but the Nuvi line you have to be more creative with. Since you can't display an actual message on the Nuvi boot, but you can display an image, all you need to do is open an image in a paint/editing program and add text to the image, save that, transfer it to the gps and select it as the boot image. If you also use the Nuvi's security features and require the gps to be unlocked before use, the image with contact information on it really increases your chance of getting it back since the finder won't get to use the unit so he might as well get a few bucks by returning it to you...
  15. OK, I checked and yes, on the search page, you can download multiple caches to a LOC file. GPX files are not listed as an option even on the cache page. So he'd need to be a Premium Member to create a query, save the query results and if it's a zip, extract the gpx files, then save them to the right folder on the Colorado... I don't think a LOC file includes all the info you'd want for paperless caching with that gps.
  16. I think it is a Premium feature, but assuming he can get the gpx files, they can be put into the Colorado/Oregon/Dakota via mass storage mode, into the appropriate gpx folder and they'll all get picked up. And duplicates are handled properly too! No need to weed out the files manually.
  17. Too bad - sounds like Garmin dumbed it down from the stopwatch I was used to, on the 60CSx. I hadn't used the Oregon stopwatch yet and assumed it was the same but obviously not. I used to use the 60 stopwatch while walking the dogs, to tell how far that part of a trip was... Just booted up my Oregon and it's not as detailed as I remember my 60, but it does have lap distance, total lap and average lap. Not much, I admit.
  18. Have you thought of using the stopwatch feature instead? Be careful though - it's not saved when you shut off the gps, but still it's a useful feature. Just remember to keep track of the data some other way.
  19. Unless of course you're using a Colorado, Oregon and probably a Dakota can do this too - it will load as many *.img files as it can fit... they don't all need to be in one gmapsupp.img.
  20. The cache was un-archived so it must have been cleaned up somehow. I notified the cache owner of this topic when I created it. The owner said he was going to participate to give his side, and "create a balanced discussion", but has chosen not to make his views known, apparently. Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hide
  21. I'm not sure I understand exactly what you mean when you say "An event made public like this" Do you mean the discussion here or the cache being seen by others outside the Caching community? It was not my intention to make this public in the first place - I had many exchanges with the owner before finally giving up and creating this topic. But if people read this, they'll know we are concerned enough to try to deal with this kind of problem ourselves, anyway. Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hide
  22. The box was made of wood, and inside it was the actual cache container. The box was made to look like the bench it was hidden on, but the bench was a loose structure which could easily be flipped over to find and remove the cache container. This was on a sandy play area right beside some play structures. I am SO glad someone took action immediately as I see it's been archived already. I felt there was a problem there, but was getting nowhere with the owner. Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hide
