  1. All my lock ups this weekend occurred after recording. Please keep us posted...

Have you tried a different uSD card? What card are you using? Brand? Class?

Have you tried the "Factory Reset"?

Those are the two things I would try first, in your situation.

    I'm using a SanDisk Ultra 64gb I believe it's a class 10.

I just checked and see there's an update for the VIRB. I'm going to update and see if it correct some of my issues.

Have you got a Smartphone? The apps have been released and the update is mostly to support the apps.

  2. System Software Update just out for the Monterra!

Go to System Settings\About Monterra\System Update while connected to WiFi to find it.

(Going from memory on the path here - my Monterra is updating itself so I can't remember the exact path, or version number, or the changelog...)

  3. Yes mine is the same way about 60 degrees off is there any new info out I am going to call Garmin again today

I think we will see a software update this week...

    It's out now!

  4. Garmin Quest (Not 2) For Sale

This is a waterproof colour gps from days gone by which has had a new battery put into it but has not had any use at all since then. It is waterproof, and comes with a powered cradle with a suction base, and a speaker/volume control built into the DC adaptor. It is in very good shape and works exactly as it should.

It has 115 Mb of memory for maps, but that memory is not expandable as it has no memory card slot. It does have a USB connection so you could geocache with it, and update maps fairly quickly.

    Complete specs here.

    Asking $40 + shipping.

  5. However, as for myself, I always try to look at new Garmin units in a more positive light for mainly two reasons 1) there are plenty of h8ers out there just looking for a reason to be unreasonable in their Garmin bashing, and 2) I wouldn't want to dissuade anyone down the road after (if) the software matures and it actually grows into itself. A single software update could turn the Monterra into something grand.

Very well said. Pretty much the same reason I prefer to work with Garmin to help them get it right by giving them constructive feedback.

  6. They are on sale all over the place for 199$

The 62 SC model? Are you sure? Can you provide a link? I know the 62S and 62 have been on sale for that price. But haven't seen the 62SC at that price.

$249 Cad for the 62SC, until Christmas at GPSCentral.ca

And knowing this, most stores would probably price match it.

  7. I'm looking at the 62stc for $299. right now. This would be my first unit. Should i jump?

(I've been using my iphone these past few weeks)

Is the 62s still $199? If so, that's a better deal. You can get free topo maps and the camera is useless next to an iPhone's.

The camera is "useless compared to an iPhone", unless you're comparing the camera's resistance to water... in which the iPhone loses each time. :P

  8. Why am I always the last to know? ;)

This begs the question "is there a publicly accessible site that has known bugs listed in it?"

You are not last. I bought a rugged mount and have pogo pins on order so I can print more docks. I have not installed it yet so I have yet to see this bug.

I wonder what it is that the Monterra does not like about the dock?

    Brian

Off topic but I had to ask: 'Print docks'? You have a 3D printer?

  9.

    A known BUG by Garmin...

With the unit turned OFF and mounted in a powered Rugged Mount, when it is Powered-ON the Garmin Outdoor App does not complete the GPS initialization even though there are more than sufficient observable Satellites. The unit has not moved since Power-OFF. Initialization can take as long as 30min unless you remove the unit from the Rugged Mount - then the GPS finish initialization and present a Satellite Lock condition.

Why am I always the last to know? ;)

  10. I suppose not, but it's easy to get gpx files on to the internal and external cards that way.

In other news, I've never seen better than 20 meter accuracy in clear and open sky on my new Monterra and it takes minutes to get a first position fix. My old Montana and even my Nexus 7 V2 can do 3 meter accuracy in 10 or 15 seconds, and even indoors with a couple of north/south facing windows near. That doesn't seem right.

Wow, that is quite unusual for the Monterra. Your production Monterra is the first I've heard of having an acquisition problem. Like yogazoo mentioned, make sure you at least once, give the Monterra time to download the almanac.

My Monterra can take 20 minutes to acquire a fix if I get into the car with it and forget to turn on the gps before moving. I've had to give up trying, shut it off, and restart it on a couple of occasions. As long as I remember to turn on the gps before moving, it's quick to find a fix.

Is the Monterra in a powered Mount when you start it?

Yes, a spare "Rugged Mount" I had kicking around.

  12. Interesting article about the technology behind the VIRB: http://www.csr.com/news/pr/2013/coach-drives-garmin-virb-action-cam

    http://csr.com/products/140/coach-14

    coach14_block_diagram_2.png?itok=XyWO0TWG

"COACH14, with its high quality video and still capability, low power and advanced features, is perfectly designed to suit the needs of action cameras. It includes proprietary Digital Video Stabilisation (DVS) technology which compensates for shakiness without the need for a gyro, ensuring steady footage even in extreme situations such as snowboarding or mountain biking. It also includes market-leading noise reduction capabilities which allows for high-grade footage even in low-light conditions, advanced colour reproduction and improved dynamic range behaviour."

  13. But GPSr units have been late getting into the wifi game, they could make a deal with garmin to give them api access and incorporate it into the software the GPSr unit.

How quickly we forget the Garmin 295W.

We still have one of those units in daily use here.

Not that I suggest the OP should look for a 295W - just that this is an example of a gps with WiFi.

  15. Seems to me that Garmin could easily create a "Field Mode" that disables all unassociated apps not in use and the various wireless functions. I can't tell you how many times I've been out and have forgotten to turn off Wi-fi, Bluetooth, or had an app running in the background that I was unaware of... until it was too late. There's enough to think about already when setting your GPS up to do what you want it to on a particular outing. Checking the various functions of Android isn't a task I necessarily want to tack on. Just seems like that task could be consolidated. Perhaps when more people complain about battery life never living up to the advertised specs (16 hours on Li-ion battery, 22 hours on rechargeable AA's) Garmin might at least consider it.

Early in the Beta cycle I suggested that exact feature. I'd found mine completely dead on a number of occasions, having been used to using the Montana which goes a long time on its battery. Maybe Garmin's still working on it, but it can't hurt to have more people ask for the feature. Even a profile with those settings would be enough.

And I do wish the Monterra had shortcuts as on the Montana.

  16. Has anyone been having issue with the VIRB locking up after upgrading to the newest version?

After I upgraded when I turn the unit on to record and then stop recording the VIRB locks up. The only way to reset is to remove the battery.

I have seen a few instances of locking up with 2.80 over the weekend.

One of the times I ended up with this in the viewfinder:

    photo%25202.JPG

I would have tried a factory reset, but I've got something else to try which I can't report on right now. But soon...

  17. To get this price in Canada you have to call customer service at 866-429-9296. I couldn't get the $49 price in Canada so customer service had me buy it at full price and is refunding me the $40.

This didn't work for me. I guess it depends on who answers the phone and how customer-oriented they are.

Looks like Garmin's sale price on CNNA LMU and Onetime is on again today, "Cyber Monday". (What a stupid name.)

And it works in Canada today too.

  18. One more I found tonight: the Tempe sensor connection is tenuous. A few feet away from the Tempe sensor you lose the connection. My Oregon 650 holds it strong out to 30 feet or so. I wonder if this is another Android based issue.

Yes, the Tempe performance is far below the legacy unit's performance. I once had the Tempe 150 feet away and still connected to my 78S. And the Tempe didn't need to be in the same room to connect to my Montana or the 78.
