  1. Didn't HMS Ledbury help a tanker called Ohio into Malta in the 2nd world war? (Vague memories from History at school)

Not sure what Pedastal has to do with it though?

    DING!

    Malta saved!

"The attempt to run some fifty ships past bombers, E-boats, minefields, and submarines has gone down in military history as one of the most important British strategic victories of the Second World War. However, it was at a cost of more than 400 lives, with only five of the original 14 merchant ships reaching the Grand Harbour."

I recently found the book "Destroyer Captain" by Roger Hill, the captain of Ledbury in a charity shop. Ohios's bows were badly damaged and the ship would not steer, Ledbury and another ship went alongside and between them got her and her vital fuel into Malta. Roger Hill died in New Zealand aged 91. His ashes were scattered over Grand Harbour in 2002.

  2. Getting off topic I know, but one of these folding water bowls is one of the best things I've bought to keep the dog watered whilst walking. When I say "bought" I mean found in a pub but if I lost it I'd buy a replacement like a shot.

Pip the dog generally comes on caching expeditions with me, useless at finding caches, exhibits displays of boredom if kept hanging about for too long, barks if I'm up a tree, cliff, etc, can be dissuaded from chasing sheep but not pheasants, squirrels or rabbits. Also gets me into trouble with bulls.

  3. I've just been looking at some on-line definitions of the term:

"To open the earth as for planting; to commence excavation, as for building, siege operations, and the like; as, to break ground for a foundation, a canal, or a railroad."

I don't think shoving a spike, or even a spiked container, into the ground fits this definition, which is probably immaterial as problematic caches still won't be published.

  4. Panasonic own Sanyo, apparently the Eneloop batteries were one of the main reasons they bought them. The specs of the two types look very similar, could they be the same thing with a different case?

Once I used an Eneloop I retired all my NiMHs for mundane duties in mice, keyboards, etc!

  5.

I've not had anything similar myself, and prefer rural caches where I can walk for a couple of hours and not interact with anyone

    Ditto.

I walked past (or close to) at least 3 caches yesterday that I didn't even bother looking for as they were too close to habitation for my liking. Town centre caches are one thing but I think caches near isolated houses in the countryside sometimes need a little more thought before they are placed.

  6. Thanks for that. It would have been harder had it not been for the Beeb's recent "Hollow Crown" series!

The Swallow Sidecar Company was founded in 1922 and changed to S.S. Cars Ltd in 1934. After the Second World War, due to the unfavourable connotations of the SS initials, the company was renamed......

To become which famous British motor manufacturer?

  7. When we were down there a few weeks ago I enjoyed:

Asparagus Anyone? http://coord.info/GCGT2A (for the scramble)

The Lizard Series plus several other caches starting at http://coord.info/GC2V640 (for the walk)

Favourite Sites - Coverack http://coord.info/GC1R9C0 (for the unexpected outdoor sculpture park)

The Lands End YOSM as it's about the only thing there that's free - park at Sennen Cove and walk round to Land's End
