  1. Fuel costs and environmental awareness still not a big issue in the States yet I note !
  2. what if my contribution is "i belayed the guy who retrieved the container"? That would be fine if you then changed position and replaced the cache whilst your partner belayed you. Otherwise you are only decieving yourself that you have reached the cache and in many respects devalueing the standard and quality of the cache which clearly was put up by the owner intending it to be obtained by the methods used by the first 'ascentionist' That is why in all probability he/she would have given it a 5 rating. Like we have been saying all along, there are other caches around of all graded difficulties. Choose 'em and respect 'em So according to you ~ for every lamp post cache we do as a family each one of us needs to pick up the skirt, grab the container, sign the log, and then put it back??? Not at all lamp post caches are not extreme caches. The whole point of the 'Extreme ' cache is to challenge the finder physically and mentally. and with respect to all lamp post cache owners the challenge of these caches is the stealth required in finding them and not the skill/ effort of lifting the skirt or the mental challenge. At this point I have to say I have never done one of these caches as they don't exist in Britain !

  4. In the UK we have only one reviewer for the ENTIRE COUNTRY ! That said he does do a great job under great pressure given that we had another 2 brilliant reviewers a year ago who were forced to resign over organizational issues.
  5. Yesterday I completed 3 'extreme' caches in the U.K No special equipment was required for any of the challenges but they all involved clambering around bridges with quite a fall into a river if a mistake was made. In two of the caches, I was suprised to see so many names that had logged the cache and upon further investigation it was revealed that most of them had not actually got to the cache ! They had merely been in a large group that had turned up for the challenge and only one person had actually retrieved the cache and came back down for everyone else to sign ! their contributions being 'I shone the torch' or 'I drove the car, supplied the pen etc ' Quite frankly THEY DID NOT GET THE CACHE and the should not have logged the cache on the system. I have a cache that involves a tight 'squeeze' and then a vertical climb. I have clearly marked in the attributes that it is not safe for children. What does he do but send his kid up on his own to get the cache [very exposed jump required at the top of a 80ft high chimney[ whilst he barked instructions from the ground] What does he do but log the cache under his own name and then become abusive when I deleted it as in my opinion he did'nt find the cache and his son did'nt have an acount [he said I was being fatist as he was too large to squeeze through the hole at the start!] I despair !!!!
  6. Good Evening from Surrey, England. I have an bookmark listing 'Extreme caches' listing these type of challenging caches in the UK. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...ae-e0f56c7c6c5c [this may not work as we are having real problems with links since the recent upgrade] I have to say I have seen a number of requests from cachers that the 'cache is too dangerous and should not be allowed' or could the cache please be moved within reach as I am only 5 ft 4ins ! You know what.... WORDS FAIL ME !!!!!
  7. And the cache page links do not work either !
  8. Never mind, they are both difficult puzzle caches so do we really care ?!!!!!!! I take it all back, Mine have gone as well ! Not being computer litterate I hope the yanks find a way of sorting it out soon. Another fine mess they have got us in ! [but I like the other improvements]
  9. [ I agree that internal links work and I haven't tried any image links. However straightforward links as in GC1AH3N and GC11KN5 seem to have been rewritten. Geochecker seems to be an exception Never mind, they are both difficult puzzle caches so do we really care ?!!!!!!!
  10. Well I guess it is horses for courses, and indeed a question of speaking as you find. However, I am a tad surprised that you think I am so daft as to have NOT read this entire thread before I phoned them. Of course I did, that's why I was so horrified at their meagre offerings! You have to remember that I damaged my unit not the unit gave up during warranty or wear and tear. I phoned and was passed through to the person dealing with repairs for handheld GPS ... how can that be the wrong person? I laid my problem before them explained it happened as I upended my wheelchair and that I was very keen to have it sorted out as soon as possible as the almost once in a lifetime mega event is looming. He didn't care ... they could offer nothing less than a ten day turnaround even with my tale of woe, and even with me offering to pay whatever it might cost. I explained I lived nearby they did not offer a bring it in service and certainly could not fix my model, I had to agree to having a reconditioned job. I wasn't trying to get something for free, I offered to pay fair and square but the deal I was offered was accept a reconditioned unit AND wait up to ten days for it (which is after I will have left for the event). Makes you wonder if they merely swap one model for another why on earth it takes 10 days! However, in the circumstances of this interaction with Garmin I found them unhelpful and was extremely disappointed that they forced me to look elsewhere ... what is wrong with telling others that there are other places out there that do care about their customers and can turn your own gear round, repaired in a couple of days? Yup, you are probably right just really unlucky with this one. Glad every thing worked out well in the long run Have a 'mega' event ,shame I cannot be there as well .
  11. I have to say that it is all to easy to dismiss Garmin [and congratulate them] But just to point out that Garmin replaced my unit with a later generation of software [with definate improvements] and a much higher capacity SD card than the one that I had taken out when I sent them the unit in a turnaround time identical to what you recieved. Only difference was that it cost nothing ! I think you must have just spoken to the wrong guy,[maybe a holiday replacement ?] I think that you should have read all the previous threads to realise that actually they are pretty dadgum good and I would certainly sooner trust the manufacturer with my expensive bit of kit than any other company !
  12. I understand the question but should there have been a picture ? O.k for a laugh my answers are BOMBAY, PEKING and your user name is of course MANDARIN !!

  14. I dunno how much of your tongue was in your cheek when you posted that , but...... ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!!
  15. JUST FOR CLARIFICATION FOLKS, NOTHING 'EXTREME' ABOUT THIS EVENT CACHE ! This certainly could be regarded as an 'adventure'....... catching public transport and/ or driving vast distances but hardly warrants the title 'Extreme' !!!!! For 'EXTREME CACHING' it maybe worthwhile visiting the following bookmark listing which details the hard work and daring carried out by cachers prepared to 'push the envelope' to develop new caches somewhat different from your communal garden trad cache. Extreme Caches :--------- http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...ae-e0f56c7c6c5c Cache safely now, no cache is worth dying for !!!!!
  16. Excellent! So my comment over here on the Pub Quiz was almost spot-on! MrsB Very close indeed ! forgot about the pub quiz , I was supposed to have set a question !
  17. For my 500th cache celebration I have plans for a significant tree cache to rival anything out there in the world. The plan is to put a cache 80ft up a Douglas Fir which is only remarkable by the fact that the tree only has branches at the very top ! Why you may well ask ? I don't know is my only reply !!!!!
  18. That you know of.... dead folk aren't big on logging Maybe not in your neck of the woods. But over here logging fatalities are commonplace.. Then perhaps we should disallow them, in the same way as some head teachers stop children from running on the playground for health and safety reasons !!! What I like about Geocaching [and rock climbing] is that you are allowed to get on with your life in the way that you want to without the risk of some lefty jobsworth obstructing my civil liberty ! Rant over !!

  20. sequoiadendrom giganteum Sounds like a good location for one of my extreme caches, however the nearest is probably at Wakehurst Place.
  21. Just for your information, I have published a bookmark listing of 'EXTREME' caches which includes many tree climbing caches as well as other quite interesting challenges that are somewhat different from the normal 'box under a pile of sticks' type of cache. I hope you find it useful and please contact me if you have any caches that you feel should be added to the listing Cheers Andy http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...ae-e0f56c7c6c5c
  22. Look at the opening post, i'm sure it mentions a "call" and there's no need to shout Sorry mate, i'll turn the volume down a bit and get my glasses out !
  23. The way i use it????? I would imagine that there is only one way to press a button on a gps unit!!! Unless i am lacking imagination. No the unit is not "Faulty", but if your car cost £6000 and you were quoted £2000 for a new key wouldnt you think that it was a bit disproportionate As for emailing them, I have tried the "contacts" and now via there home page......and still no response. If someone says hello, it's only common courtesy to reply But hey if thats their level of customer service and your willing to accept that, thats fine, it's your choice. I expect more. To be fair, in the past i have had good service from them and have recieved replacement units when others have gone wrong..............perhaps their having an "Off month " AS OTHERS HAVE MENTIONED, YOU NEED TO USE THE PHONE!!!!! THIS MONTH WAS FINE FOR ME !
  24. My Garmin Etrex Vista cx needed the rubber grip glueing back on [2nd time this has happened] Once again they replaced it with a new unit [well an 'overhauled' unit but it looked brand new to me] They recieved it on Monday and it was back with me on Wednesday - All free of charge even though out of warranty. I will never ever use any other make of gps as the service is so good. Tom Tom however are C**P they do not answer phones and the e mail response service is non existant. Had free map upgrades from them when I bought the package [700 series] but the input codes supplied did not work and nor did the speed camera positions. Could not get them to assist [too late now] Will NEVER EVER use Tom Tom again !!!
  25. A straight forwards cache FTF usually picked up within 30 mins in our neck of the woods [Reigate -Surrey] but there are alot of cachers around here with nothing better to do with our lives !!!
