  1. Andy, have you tried using someone else's computer? Before you hang yourself, it may be work touching base with someone local to see if your gps works on their pc. If it does not work it may be a problem with the unit communication port. Hope this helps Dave Good idea Will give this a go Cheers BTW you are right this is not a hanging issue but City being on top of the Premier League is !
  2. i'm getting a headache ! will have a look at this in the next few days. Great that you were able to help me with this and will give it a go . Many thanks Andy
  3. How about "Get a £99 android phone." instead? If someone brings out an android phone that'll survive a 25mph head first exit from a cycle as my Dakota did last summer (my phone survived too, but that was tucked away) I'd say Garmin would have a lot to worry about. They don't really do anything now as far as I can see. In the sense that if they turn their outdoor gps devices into a phone / app store / computer in the way that phone manufacturers have basically turned their phone / computing devices into gps receivers, at best they'd be another phone manufacturer. I have just purchased a Motorola Defy Android which is Waterproof [1 m] shock proof and has a non scratch 'Gorilla' screen. I purchased it as I am fed up with being told that the phone warranty does not cover droppage , water , ' normal' use etc unless you take out insurance. I pay £25 pm and so far so good. Had thought about a I phone 4 but cannot see the point given the apps and functions on this new phone [and I save quite a few bob !]
  4. i'm afraid that I despair as still not working despite all advice ! Firefox installed and Garmin plug in test page says that it is installed but will not allow me to download. It stiil says that I should down load plug ins !!!! I give up - will have to rely on c:geo / android Groundspeak downloads for my Android phone [despite serious limitations] Maybe I should give up on Vista ? If I purchased a new Oregon do you think I will still have the same problem with dowl loading ? Cannot get on with Swiss army knife as it is constantly asking for numbers that I have no record of. A shame as it all used to work so well using no special software at all. Thanks for your assistance anyway Andy
  5. I am on version 8 already. What do you mean about clearing the I.E Cache. Do you mean removing then re loading the browser ? wil I lose anything if I do this ? Andy
  6. I get the same message using Chrome - but FF is fine. O.K , thanks for getting back to me. I have uninstalled / installed and still have the same problem. Have tried different link cables too. I am using internet Explorer for your information, cheers Andy
  7. I am having trouble down loading caches to my Garmin Vista CX. When I try to down load the message says 'Garmin plug in not loaded' but it is loaded as a] I have used it before and b] When I do a test it says that it is successfully loaded. Any ideas ? Have an android phone which will help me today when out caching , but yesterday it could not find any caches nearby at all [ using c:geo ] Many thanks and Happy New Year
  8. Today I buffed for the first time. It was still very cold outside and mine was bright blue !!! Thank you Santa.
  9. i suppose thats true, in as much as a car without them often won't perform at all! Our all wheel drive scoobie was a godsend, and because it looks like a normal car, someone followed us onto a 18 inches of virgin snow in a car park last week, clearly thinking "If they can do it, so can I!" My how we laughed! On the subject of Winter tyres, I had them fitted to my van 3 weeks ago [i say smugly] I have driven around on the snow and ice quite happily in the knowlege that that they out perform even 4 X 4 vehicles [with standard tyres] If you go to the Alps in the Winter the only 4X4 vehicles you see are British reg. The locals drive normal cars with Snow tyres fitted. The tyres - £20 each second hand [half tread] -more than paid for given that I was able to work every day in the bad weather we had in Surrey.
  10. I would like to think that this directive came from from a serving member of our plod. I say this as I understand that at any one time 1 in 7 coppers are off 'sick' not to mention those who have taken early retirement on the grounds of 'post traumatic stress' [why they were employed in the first place if they are not up to the job is beyond me] or are relieved from their post on full pay whilst a complaint is investigated. In my experience most cops I have dealt with have no idea of what the real world is all about. I have never had my collar felt [or any reason to have so] but have no confidence in any of them. Why don't they start catching real trouble makers such as the drug pushers that are active in just about every town in Britain ? Leave everyone else alone Humbug Humbug
  11. It's primary use is still aimed at the deaf, hearing impaired etc. There is already this sort of service for hill walkers but I can't remember what it's called. I'm sure someone else will. Last year I was on a remote Scottish mountain when a member of our party broke her leg whilst on our way down. Fortunately we did have a good signal but it still took over 2hrs before the chopper arrived to rescue us by which time we were very cold and suffering first signs of hyperthemia. Had we had limited or no phone coverage things could have been very serious. This is a GREAT idea and I will forward details to my climbing club.
  12. Kinda like Herpies.... Thanks for your reassurance everyone [apart from the latter comment !] Now I wonder if i can remember my I.D !?
  13. I am unable to send emails on my new Motorola 'Defy' android phone. Motorola have advised that I carry out a factory reset . I am concerned that By doing this I will lose the Geocaching software - then have to fork out again for the software. Can anyone advise please ? Service providers [Vodaphone] have tried to sort the problem out but have faled hence my referal to the phone manufacturer.
  14. It was -3 C this morning when I was out caching. I'm glad that I wasn't in the buff !
  15. Well, on Sunday my phone went into the washing machine resulting in a restricted caching day whilst I went shopping for a new phone. Ended up signing up for a free Motorola 'Defy' phone. Compared with my previous , this phone is incredible ! Shockproof and weather proof -[ 1m water depth] this is ideal for caching and for my outdoor activities and work [i'm a gardener] Today I down loaded the android Geospeak package and all seems to be working fine ! Not compared locating performance with my Garmin as it was out of battery but all functions seem to work really well. Looks like the developers have sorted things out. Found my first cache using the Motorola Defy phone. It was raining heavily [glad the phone is water resistant down to 1m] Not sure about the Radar target [how exactly is this supposed to work ? is this a phone function or downloaded Groundspeak function ? Bothe the Motorola and my Garmin Vista CX were equally inaccurate by about 30ft ! Passed the first test !
  16. I remember a few years ago visiting my local gun shop for a new pair of wellies. I was suprised by the range on offer but one of the most expensive on offer [well over £100] were indeed a hybrid of rubber wellie and walking boots. They had a leather liner a vibram sole and a kind of 'boot like' footbed. I was told that they were the most popular for game keepers as they do alot of walking in the country -on and off footpaths - Sounds familiar ?! They may have been made by Hunter ? not sure though
  17. Why ? this just relates to the screen does it not ? I admit I an very much a newbie to Android phones. It would be a real shame if I cannot use the Geocache option as the phone spec is great [waterproof and shock proof] at a much lower price than the ridiculously high price of the i phone. Any further information would be appreciated thanks I agree with you. I've got an HTC Tattoo. Great little phone, great GPS, runs 3rd party apps fine - and if you root the OS, will also run the Groundspeak app. But the way Google's Android market works is..... it will only list - and allow you to download - apps that the developers have said will run with your phone's specs. So although the Groundspeak app will work perfectly well on phones with a qvga screen, the developers in their wisdom either didn't beta test it with a qvga equipped handset - or are still working on it being even better than at present with a qvga screen. Unfortunately - although we've been asking since the app came out - they are unable or unwilling to let us know which scenario is the reason we're still unable to buy and use it. 18. Tell us more, without having to search, what is the GC number? It's GC1CAPD 'Who do you think you're kidding Mr Hitler' http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...db-51b06ac84da3
  19. Today's 'Open Country' on radio 4 http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00vr...try_Resistance/ featured an underground bunker used in the 2nd WW in South Wales. The bunker was used by Auxilliary units- a highly secretive set up who would work under cover [literally] should Gerry have invaded. As a challenge in the final seconds of the programme a challenge was offered that there should be a Geocache in the bunker ! I have a such a cache in Sussex - think my idea was copied Come on S. Wales cachers - a challenge for you ! #
