  1. We know it is not totally accurate. It seems part of the reason for this is because the Groundspeak volunteers refuse to share information they have with Geocachingpolicyinfo. The website has the potential to be a very useful tool for the geocaching community and many of us neutral observers are confused and surprised by Groundspeak's open hostility towards Geocachingpolicyinfo. From what I can tell GPI is not a commercial site. Its not scraping GC.COM (a la Buxley's). Its only mission appears to be providing a valuable service to the user community and the very people who can help are standing in the way.

This is typical of gc.com. Someone else does something that they feel in some small way may take away from their little claim of being "The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site" and they have to do something to make them go away. But they follow up by saying they are planning on offering the same service. We have seen it with Buxley's maps (yes there are some other issues involved there). It has happened with the service (sorry I can't remember the name) that provided email notifications of when new caches where placed in your area, what has it been like a year waiting for gc.com to provide that service.

Now we see that someone is willing to step up and provide one place to reference policies and gc.com seems to have some kind of problem with that. But oh don't worry gc.com is planning to provide that service in the future as well. Don't hold your breath waiting on that one either. Instead of pointing out the problems with geocachingpolicy.info why don't you all help out the community and share the information you have?

As far as who those people are, what does it matter? It should be pretty obvious why they don't want their identities know. As vindictive as some can be on this site, why would they want to have to deal with all of that while they are just trying to provide a useful service to the community. We have seen how others who do something that many find useful but runs afoul of TPTB and have not been annointed with the holy water from the Emerald City are treated. So for better or worse we have seen that following the party line is more important than providing information that would be useful to the community and make the sport better for everyone.

  2. I have certainly had my share of run ins with CO. Tough guy. Rarely (yea ok probably never) agreed with him but it was always a good and enjoyable fight.

I do hope by backing away from this nonsenese a little you get the chance to enjoy life more and you get better every day and live long and prosper. I look forward to taking you on in the future as just a regular citizen.

  3. Why do you insist that guidelines be rules ie. that they be rigid? its ok when they bend the way you want them to but not when they go against your way of thinking.

Im done with this one, its going in circles.

    Enjoy the ride.

Because as many others have said the "guidelines" get held up as rules when it is convenient. Why is it so difficult to see that?

I am guessing all of us can find something in the "guidelines" we don't like. But they are shoved into our faces like Moses coming down from the Mount. Except when it is something that TPTB happen to want to have happen. Then you wonder why there is so much angst around.

Get it together and either have rules or guidelines. And if they are rules then enforce them across the board. If they are guidelines then don't deny caches from being approved if they don't follow the guidelines, they are after all just guidelines.

We all have rules we follow in our lives, most we are ok with others maybe not. But for the most part we work within that system based on the feeling that all of the rules apply to all of the people the same way. When that does not happen people begin to question why they should follow any of the rules. Can you say anarchy? Nice try!

But again in GC doublespeak these are not rules they are "guidelines". Which are rules except when GC says they are not. So follow the guidelines as if they were rules but they are not rules because they are only guidelines which are meant to be broken. Everyone is equal some are just more equal than others.

But hey in the end, Because I said so, is always a vaild reason when that is all you got.

And besides I think the difficulty rating is way off, it should be a 5, seeing as how one has to bring special equipment.

  4. I saw that too while testing but decided to let it go until I could find some time to mess with it. Probably something silly in the javascript.

I hit up on this from time to time. I find I always end up wtih a problem when I play with the array and check the length. Then send it into a for loop and do the wrong thing in either subtracting or not subtracting one from the length on the to part of the for statement. So I either leave one left not being done or I get an out of bounds error because I do one more than is in the array.

  5. Just saw one minor problem on the bookmark list.

If you have one item in the list and click the check all button it does not check anything. Not a big deal you can just click on the box and then do a bulk delete. But it does think it did something because the button text changes from check all to uncheck all.

  6. Not to mention Cell Phones. Are there any Cell Towers there?

I don't know but I would guess there are no cell towers there. It kinda makes it a little harder to enforce a lot of other things if you allow a tower to be thrown up. But you could then hide a cache there, make it a multi and have the coordinates to the place where you wanted the person to end up in the first place.

  7. Actually, GPSs ARE off-limits in some Wilderness Areas (though I doubt it would be enforced).

Yea but do they really mean GPSr or radios, walkmans, iPods and those types of things? Besides the sign have you seen anything that gives more detailed information?

A GPSr could make the difference between someone getting back from a hike or park rangers having to go out and find someone that got lost.

After all "electronic devices" is pretty vague, a pacemaker could be considered an electronic device. Or for that matter even a flashlight.

  8. Though maleware sounds like a fashion statement.

Yea but one will never be able to keep up with the length or width that is now fashionable. And can one wear white maleware after Labor Day?

  9. That ain't gonna' happen. While reading the article so many problems with getting and keeping a system like that working came to my mind. Can one even begin to see what kind of government infrastructure it would take to run that.

But the one thing I did find noteworthy -- this is being studied in Oregon. There they are in the news again, what is going on in that part of the country?

  10. The federal government and by extension my taxes pay for all kinds of things I don't get to use. For me I would love to drive around in one of those stryker vehicles some weekends for fun.

Plus there are plenty of other places that are federal land that I can not go. Even in what should be the most public of places, Congress, there are places they do not let the general public go.

That does not begin to address the fact that even for activities that are allowed in some parks are not allowed in all of them and may not even be allowed in the entire park where that activity is allowed.

Trust me I am a very strict believer in the Constitution. And don't think that the current federal government in any way comes close to following the intents of the framers of that document. But I just can't follow you down the track on this train of thought.

    :lostsignal:

  11. I'll refrain from replying to the rest of  your post.  I beleive it speaks for itself.  Hopefully landmanagers won't think all geocachers have similar beliefs.

I get where you are going with that but I think the point was valid.

If the land manager does allow vehicles but does not allow a cache to be placed in the same area, doesn't that sound like a nitwit on a power trip to you?

  12. If it is not private land it will eventually have to be voted on to make it law not to place caches in an area. Those who care should get out there and not take this sitting down. VOTE...make stink, write a congressman/woman. Someone will listen, someone will do something if you become the squeaky wheel. I know few will do this because few have tried to use the system to get something...they are generally complaining about it.

    Wrong!

When was the vote to not allow geocaching on NPS land? There was none. These are not laws they are regulations. And a lazy and fat Congress and Supreme Court have allowed them to continue on and have the effect of law when our Constitution does not allow for that. It is possible that the decision to not allow geocaching on land owned by a particular government agency was made by one person. That is how far our form of government been allowed to stray from its original intention.

  13. "The underlying problem is that we are not historically comfortable in dealing with anonymous people doing activities in the parks," said Keener, who works with geocachers for the park service.

"If no one consults us, that really ticks the land managers off to a certain extent," she said. "They're not particularly happy about that."

I think this is the real point of it all.

I am not even sure what is meant by that. I don't usually check in with the park ranger when I go hiking or spread out a blanket to catch some rays. Everybody there is anonymous. I park my car and obey the signs and rules as posted. Sorry if you get upset because I don't consult with you on how I plan to spend my time in a public area.

As has been stated earlier the problem lies with the control freaks running the place. They do need to be reminded that they are there to protect the land for our use. It is not their land. And if nobody gets to use and enjoy the land there really is not much of a need to protect it.

It has been said before here, geocaching is no different than hiking to some particualr spot. No different than a virtual which they have no control over. It just so happens that something is left behind. They never really talk about the cache that much just about the traffic it creates. Blah, blah, blah.

Just another example of what happens when some people are given just a little bit too much authority and have no understanding on what that means.

  14. Of course, Starbucks would have to source, purchase, and warehouse the squirt bottles, but that's ok. If people want their coffee in squirt bottles, Starbucks must provide it.

They are already warehousing the squirt bottles. It does not take any more resources to provide the coffee in this form. No they don't have to do it, but Starbucks should want to try to make their customers happy. But of course Starbucks does have to contend with Hortons, Seattle's Best, Dunkin Donuts, etc. I guess that is where the analogy falls apart.

  15. Ahh there we go.

To stay with the theme for the week:

Starbucks makes a great cup of coffee. Everyone loves it.

Someone figures out Starbucks coffee does a pretty good job of cleaning toilets.

The people using Starbucks coffee as a toilet cleaner would like Starbucks to sell their coffee in a squirt bottle, to make it better for cleaning toilets.

Since Starbucks doesn't sell their coffee as a toilet cleaner, there is no reason for them to market it in squirt bottles. Gosh that was fun!

Hmmmm .... The way I see that is like this.

Starbucks makes coffee and then some people figure out that not only can you drink it but it also does a good job cleaning toilets.

Starbucks customers suggest maybe Starbucks should think about putting their coffee in squirt bottles. That way it would make it easier for them. Starbucks would make their custoners happy. They would not have to keep coming in using up coffee cups they don't need.

Instead of thinking it was not their original purpose and they had never thought of but it does make sense to a lot of people and go with. Starbucks says no and then just goes on to female dog about all of the toilet cleaning people who are using up all of their cups and making longer lines for everybody.

Oh yea and there is a bunch of people in the Starbucks sitting at the tables that just sit there and moan about the toilet cleaning people. They don't get that some people have figured out a different way to use the coffee. They see no reason why those people just can't be happy to drink the coffee. If they just can't be happy with that they should just go over to Horton's and get their coffee there.

    Yea this is fun!

  16. I am guessing advertising is always a tough topic to think about. I am not sure it brings in all that much money. Some yes but one has to balance that with how much people would be turned off by it and what is that worth.

For me I do like how google and gmail handle it. Just some little things on the side that do relate to what your main topic is. One time I was writing to a friend using gmail and they said something about when I am next in their town I could show them about that geocaching thing I do. Well off to the side were some little links to things to do in their town, places to stay and some gps related ads. It was off there to the side I could click or not but it did not get in the way. But they keep changing based on the content of the email. Sometimes it works better than others.

But yea popups and all of those PITA things and I think you would see people in revolt. Or maybe it could be turned off for premium members because they are already supporting the site.

  17. Enchanted Shadow,

You are new here so you may not understand that this subject is a little touchy for some. There are many more issues than you may realize going on.

Don't take what some have said as anything personal. You will find that there are some here that use this site that have their own way of doing things and how they see what geocacing is about. They don't understand that some people look at things differently. But if you don't do or see things their way, you are wrong and you have no valid reason for do it that way.

The subject of downloading listings and keeping your own database seems to me to be more about protection than anything else. There is some huge fear that people will take all of the listings and then start their own site with that information. There are reasons for that fear which I won't get into, only beacuse it is rather long and detailed and it depends on how one wishes to read the history.

And still there are many other reasons. You may want to do a search on the forums about this. Much of this has been discussed many times and should be able to find many threads that will give you several points of view about this subject.

But I do understand fully what you are saying. You do not need to explain or appologize for what you are doing. Many options are always given on how you can or should do things and why you don't need to do what you are doing. But again those things may work for those individuals and not for you.

The other point that rarely ever gets mentioned is that PQs are not always working as they should. It seems to have gotten much better than when they first started but there are times when PQs do not work. Even to the point that sometimes you don't get them at all for a day or more at a time. So you would be out of luck if you wanted one then and could not get one, but with your own database you would still have something to use.

I could go on and on about this subject and have in many other threads. So I would suggest again that you do some searching on past threads and that may help you get up to speed on this subject. Also keep in mind that everyone here is suposed to have their opinion treated the same way no matter how many finds or posts they have or how long they have been caching. You may find that in fact some people don't really do that, again nothing personal they just see things differently and think their way is the only way.

With all of that said don't let it discourage you. Enjoy the hobby/sport how you want. Do it the way you want to. Yes there are limits but over time you will figure out how to work around them. And you will have to figure that out in a way that works best for you.
