  1. To use another Bones quote : "It's life Jim, but not as we know it" Perhaps not very popular in the mainstream, I'm sure there's a few of us around that enjoy playing them and see potential in it. Even as it stands, without further development, it is still usable. I am currently tinkering with the various available tools to see what can be done and see great potential, even if it's just for my kids to play. Kinda like homebrew games Russ
  2. That works if you're navigating in map mode, ff you're navigating with the Compass, you press the Menu button, but next you press 'Destination' before 'Add Waypoint' shows up. Russ
  3. I'm quite new here, but I wanted to echo what briansnat said, it would be best to check with your local reviewer. My first cache was rejected for having a commercial interest because I used a pub name as a landmark (common here in the UK). The cache description said nothing about entering the pub, just that a related landmark was moved close to it. I had to remove that to get the cache published. All the best, Russ
  4. Hey guys, I am trying to set up my forum signature, I followed the instructions in another thread saying go to 'Your Profile' -> 'Your account settings' -> 'Review forum signature', but the pop-up box that appears is just a blank, grey page. I have searched and can find no other mention of this, any ideas? Thanks, Russ
  5. Do you mean the Ace or the recently released Ace 2? I got the Ace 2 last week and am pretty happy with it. The Ace 2 uses GLONASS as well as GPS (GLONASS is another network of GPS style satelites deployed by Russia I believe) and locks on really quickly, even in built up areas. Even if it's the first Ace, you'll still be fine. The app requires Android 1.5 or later, both Aces run 2.3.x. I still use my old phone, an LG GT540 as a backup and even that runs the official app ok. It crashes a bit every now and then, but it is a really old phone, and does the job. Even this phone gets down to 3metre accuracy in ideal conditions. In short, you'll be fine HTH, Russ
  6. Excellent thread, have now found the FB page. We've only been going just over a week. My Mrs makes hand-made jewellery and we take a selection of that with us as well as a selection of toy cars, figurines, pocket games, etc and always try to leave a cache with better loot than when we found it. It's awful to open a cache with the kids and see a load of old store loyalty cards, playing tokens from an board game, sweet wrappers, etc, nothing of interest to them, their faces drop My next spare cash will be spent on spare log books/sheets/bags so that we can replace logs when needed as well. If all cachers had a similar attitude I'm sure things would be better for everyone. If all anyone finds in containers is junk then I can see nobody bothering in future and just going micro/nano all the time and that is bad for families. Swag makes this great, healthy hobby fun for the kids! I agree with what a previous poster said, most new cachers I think are eager and enthusiastic (like we are) and do swap well. I think it's likely it's the 'old hands' who have become jaded, or disillusioned with swag that are perhaps making it worse....but then again, it's probably a mix of both. Anyways, just wanted to add my penny's worth to an excellent cause Russ
  7. Plenty of good replies already, but I am new also, almost a week in and 29 finds. My first couple of days were horrendous, we were about 50/50 on whether we'd find a particular cache or not, but as you discover more you get more of a feeling for seeing things out of place and likely hiding spots. All I can say is, stick with it, it gets better with experience Russ
  8. Oops, I must admit I didn't search, I just browsed, my bad...the years I've been using internet forums I should know better But thanks for the links, tip and advice, very helpful Russ
  9. Hey Guys, I've had a good browse of this forum and not seen this covered, apologies if I missed a thread. Anyways, we're new cachers and came upon an obstacle yesterday where we couldn't remove the cache from it's container....we realised we needed to carry tweezers with us in future. So, aside from a swapping-swag, pen/pencil and tweezers, what other essential gear might we need to add to our caching kitbag? Thanks, Russ
  10. Awww, thanks mate, you searched for me, that's so kind (that sounds a bit insincere, but I assure you I do mean it) I messaged a member that appears very active in my area yesterday and he gave me that link also, I didn't think to post a follow up here, I should have done to save your time and help others, I apologise for that. Thanks again for all your help MrsB, it is appreciated Russ
  11. The SECaching forum was a very active forum up until about 6 - 9 months ago, then gradually the action moved across to South East Geocachers on facebook. It seems the regional geocaching groups on facebook have taken over most of the "local chat" about geocaching. MrsB Thanks for taking the time to reply, but from that facebook page it says "For geocachers in Berks, Hants, Oxon, Bucks, Surrey, Sussex ", so unfortunately I'm not quite in that area, I'm in Essex Thanks again, Russ
  12. New to geocaching and looking for a group in (south)Essex or South-East England. There are a couple of links in this thread but some are 4 years old, don't want to waste my time with a defunct group/website. Thanks, Russ
