    Watching

Someone logged on one of my caches that they are watching it because they didn't think it would last, whatever that means. Now there's a vote of confidence. At least they were honest!
  2. I make mine, but the most popular sig item around here is a small rubber chicken that's not handmade. It's popular because everyone likes the guy who leaves them, and because it fits his personality.
  3. I'm jealous! Check to see if there are special instructions for starting up your unit when you are suddenly a lot farther away from where you usually run it!
  4. You should skip these threads if you're over it. Some people haven't been visiting the forums as long and have not discussed the subject yet.
  5. Wow, very insightful. I think you're onto something. I hope my hides are about the finder. A woodsy spot is more likely to have families than an urban cache would, so I feel like I want to leave trade items there, but I understand that what I want to do is not necessarily what others would do. Our challenge, as hiders, is to keep getting better. In my mind, anything involving a film canister, guardrail or lamppost skirt is no longer a viable hide because they've been done to the limit. (There's a hide in Skowhegan Maine that LOOKS like it's going to be a skirt, but when you lift it, there's a note to the effect of "as IF! Keep looking") But who's to say I'm not just jaded, and plenty of hiders might still think those are clever alternatives? I like the idea of a nasty, evil, difficult hide in the woods, but I hope there would be a trade cache also, within a third of a mile.
  6. There's a lot of good swag with corporate names on it. It's just interesting gimme's being passed on down the line.
  7. I don't get why there needs to be a public argument. You thought it was illegal, you reported it and it got archived. It's troubling that you seem not to be able to let go.
  8. People can switch to the printable view and that gets rid of the pictures. I think it also changes it to a smaller font. When you write it, you may want to try to have all the nuts-n-bolts info right at the beginning, separate from the creative stuff. Here in Maine there was one cache where people weren't reading all the way to the bottom of the page where it said DO NOT DRIVE IN THE CORNFIELD so they ended up with an irate landowner. ETA make sure you know what your html looks like on other peoples' computers. As far as being creative in the logs, some people are prolific writers, and some are not. Can't control everything.

    Pda Logs

I use Mobipocket e-book on my Palm Tungsten. I really like it. It brings in all the logs.
  10. Doesn't your prof expect you to find the information yourself?
  11. Don't be afraid to be methodical. For some reason this is very hard for me but that makes it all the more rewarding when I finally find it. My first impulse is to hop to every likely spot, in scattered directions. When I see all the spots where it COULD be hidden, my mind starts racing and I want to give up. I have to force myself to put the backback down at what I think is ground zero, then make a very organized circle of about 20 feet around it. (Don't put down your GPSr or you may never find your backpack again! )In the woods, ground zero might change a few times too. I usually cache alone, but the few times I have been with other people, everyone splits up because we all seem to have our own system. That's the one that has worked for me, so far. Have fun, it does get easier - I only have 77 finds and it's still getting a little easier every time. But not TOO easy, cause that wouldn't be as fun!

I bet old ones still in the wrappers would be good though.

I can't go for it. proseltyzing is not OK. eta - I'm Worthy Matron of my Eastern Star Chapter but I will not use a geocache to turn Mormons, Muslims or Pagans on to the merits of the 5 Biblical heroines, or to engage in any exclusionary religious cameraderie. Sports mementos are recreational items and not even close to the same plane of seriousness as religious stuff.
  15. I have caches ready to go out but my area is saturated so I'm waiting for a great spot. Nobody needs more LAME hides.
  16. Have you tried CacheMate? When we started paperless caching I used MobiPocket because it was free and simple to use. The problem was, all 500 caches that I had in the Palm were all just in one big long list. It was very hard for me to navigate through the caches without scrolling. It took more time than it would have to print the pages and sort through them. Once we switched to Cachemate we've been out with my cousin who uses MobiPocket. I can get the info in half of the time that it takes him. I can't believe how easy Cachemate is to use and it was only $8! I did pay the 8 bucks for Cachemate but I still prefer the Mobi. Are you sure you did it right? I just use the search function, once for the description and once again for the hint if I need it. When there are a lot of listings, I start the hint search backwards from the last page because the hints are last. It never takes more than a few seconds. I don't take the time to change my home co-ords, so Mobi always has it listed starting with the closest to my house. So when I'm away from home, I ask the GPSr for the closest cache, then punch the GC name into the Mobi and decide whether I want to go for that cache, or the next one and so on. If you read my logs you can see I do a lot of touring and only get around to grabbing a few caches, so it's important to be able to sort through and pick & choose. But I'm glad you like cachemate. The end result is the same!
  17. I'm still new, but I travel a lot. When I went to Minnesota recently I was downloading in batches of anywhere from 100 to 500. That would be pretty time consuming to make notes on, especially not knowing which few I would actually be able to go for. But everyone's free to use the method that works best for them!
  18. Find lots of caches, read the logs, and then decide how you would like yours to be the same or different. Best way to learn, and also the funnest. What are you doing inside reading this! Get out there!
  19. I think you're part of a very small group. Most of the people I've heard comment on Mobi say how much of a useless piece of trash it is. Probably would be most useful to stick with one's own experience, especially when there is no specific compaint there. Possibly, but you were suggesting it as an alternative, and I don't think its a very good one. The person asked us what we use. I think you're off base to shoot down another person's response. And in the first place, why not try it first before you give your opinion on it.
  20. That would be a great service. I would love to see your page when it's finished. May I be on your email list?
