Well one thing I can tell you, if your Gold has been off for 2 years WAAS will no longer work on it. It would have had to be on last summer to get the WAAS almanac update.
Ack! Wasn't expecting that. Oh well, sounds like it's time to work on justifying a new unit with the misses.

I haven't touched my Meridian Gold for a couple of years and now am itching to get back into geocaching. I pulled my GPS out of hiding and had to re-read the owners manual just to figure out how to use it again. I still can't figure out how to change my old address to my new address on the welcome screen though...
Anyway, the unit has version 5.12 on it. I went to the Magellan website and see there's a version 5.4 available for download. I soon discovered I am unable to hook it up to my laptop though due to no DB-9 ports on the PC. I'll go to RadioShack and pick up a DB-9 to USB adapter I guess. My question is this... besides upgrading to V5.4, is there anything else that has changed in the past two years that I should be aware of and is a must upgrade? Is this Magellan Gold still a viable unit or have the new GPS' on the market made such tremendous advances in usability that I should scrap this one and go buy a new model?
If I keep the Gold I have, what is the latest version of Magellan's map software that will work with this unit? I bought it while living in New Mexico and now live in Maine and would like current topo maps of this region to put on it.

But two of the three people who have found it have pretty much slammed the contents, saying they were unimpressive. I was hurt by the comments, especially because in *my* opinion, I thought the items were cool. Obviously I was wrong.
You weren't wrong. Besides, I thought the lure of geocaching was getting outdoors, the hunt, and the feeling one gets when the cache is located. If anyone is participating in this hobby just to get "cool stuff" from a cache then they are (in my opinion) in the wrong hobby and should keep their adolescent remarks to themselves.

Thanks CheesyD - I seemed to remember there was a workaround but couldn't remember what is was for the life of me. I'll give it a try.
No problem. If it helps, this is the directory on my PC that Topo saves the IMG files in...
C:\Program Files\Magellan\MapSend Topo US\EXPORT\IMAGES
I used the defaults when I installed the software so maybe your IMG files end up in the same folder on your PC.

I agree - if it was a free patch at one point why the change now? As a point of interest I have version 3.0 - when I first got my Meridian I was able to load topo maps no problem at all. Since then I upgraded the firmware in my GPS, now I can't upload maps any more - but I can still upload waypoints and routes. Wish I could get it to upload to a card reader though.
I figure if it was a free patch at some point it still should be. If anyone happens to be clearing out some space on their hard drive and wants me to put the patch in my Recycle Bin let me know
Yeah, that'd be a great thing to have if someone would by accident email it me.
To get the region on you SD card... can't you tell tell Topo to upload the region to the GPS while the GPS is not connected? Topo will create the IMG file and then give you an error when it can't find the GPS. The IMG file will still have been created on your hard drive. Just go into Explorer on your PC and cut and paste the IMG file to your removable drive (your SD card). That used to work anyway...

What is the latest version number? I'd like to know that I'm getting something that's up to date if I buy online...
4.20, but you can upgrade to 4.20 for free from version 3.X with a download from the Magellan website.
It's just a small patch that enables the program to write regions to the SD card via an SD reader/writer.
I had heard of the free upgrade as welll and contacted Magellan Support after being unable to locate a link to download the upgrade (I have 3.00a). Magellan emailed me back telling me they will supply the 4.20 upgrade if I send them my old Topo and a check for $25 plus $6 for shipping. I decided to pass.

Another possible bug in V2 Beta 2?
I've lost the ability to use the split screen function
. I can depress the button, the little 'split screen format' window is displayed but the screen no longer 'splits'.
Using the vertical arrow with 2 horizontal lines has no effect at all. No matter what I do to regain the lower window it don't want to come back.
I've tried minimising an maximising the main GSAK window & I've tried reloading the program but I still cannot get my lower window back
.Any ideas?
Weird. Splitscreen works fine for me (V2 Beta 2).

I've been out of caching for about a year and am now getting back into it. GASK looks like a good tool to be able to utilize so I downloaded and installed it. Now I have questions... sorry if these have been asked already.
I've loaded seven caches into GASK thus far. To do this I saved each individually as a .loc file, imported it into GASK, and then went on to the next one. None of these show up as "found" in the "LG" column".
Is there a way to import all of the caches I want as one GPX file or what is the best way to accomplish getting my caches (found and those I'm still seeking) into GASK?
The "Placed" date on all of them shows as today's date and I haven't found a way to edit that info so it is accurate in GASK. Also no "Last Log" info was imported. The cache type column is all question marks.
Do I have to have OziExplorer installed in order for GASK to function properly?
Sorry for all of the newbie questions.
LOC files don't contain all the info you require. You need to download a pocket query from Geocaching.com and you need to be a premium member to do so.

I have been out of geocaching for awhile. Sold my Meriplat and everything that I had to go with it. Now I'm looking to take geocaching up again and am considering a SporTrak Map. I have Topo loaded on my PC (but no CD) from when I bought my MeriPlat. Will I be able to utilize the Topo I have on my PC with a new SporTrak Map or will I need to buy another CD copy of Topo?

The waypoint direction is indicated by the waypoint icon on the outside of the compass dial. By lining the compass needle up with the waypoint icon I know I'm heading toward the waypoint. But the sun's position should not be affected by this. The problem I'm experiencing shows the sun icon on the opposite side of where it should be and the waypoint icon is shown in the opposite direction of where it really is.

My MeriPlat is acting strangely... or I'm doing something wrong. When I do a GOTO on a waypoint and then check the compass screen, the sun/moon indicator is often on the opposite side it should be. I have the North Reference set to "Magnetic". If I then set the North Reference to "True" or "Mils Magnetic" and then reset it back to "Magnetic", the sun/moon indicator will then move to the proper position. I'm having to go through this nearly every time (sometimes several times) I power on the unit while hiking and it's extremely frustrating. Am I doing something wrong? Why doesn't the unit "know" where the dadgum sun is everytime I power on?
Also, I thought these things were supposed to retain the latest "GOTO" waypoint when powered off? I'm having to re-do the "GOTO" on my current waypoint destination whenever I power off. Which of course then sends me spiraling into the North Reference quagmire outlined above. If this is as good as these things work I'll go back to paper map and compass.

All well and good but that still does nothing to prevent the city from being sued in the event something should happen. They are just trying to limit their liabilities and they aren't responsible if someone's mailbox gets blown up, but they are if they get injured in the park. Again, it's all about the money.

OK, so you guys are geocaching freedom fighters. Granted. But I still haven't read a legitimate solution to the litigation issue. Just because you "cheated death" this time, what about the time when someone does get hurt (or claims to have been hurt) in the park? Are you saying that is an impossibility? Are you willing to fork over the costs of defending the lawsuit and any resulting monetary awards? If so then just place a few million in a fund accessible by the city and I'm sure they'd be glad to let you place your canister in the park once again.
Look, I know you're pissed about the parks ruling but reality is reality. It's all about lawyers these days. Thank a Democrat for denying any real tort reform.
