  1. There are 2 things that make your gps not fun for geocaching: 1. It only receives one satellite at a time, unlike a modern unit which can "see" up to 12 at one time. This means you will have trouble even under light tree cover. 2. It will only allow you to input coordinates accurate to 1/100 of a minute. New units (and the geocaching site) list caches accurate to 1/1000 of a minute. That means there will always be a potential of 50-100 feet of inaccuracy. My advice is look for a used, beater yellow eTrex or a GPS12. You will be WAY happier, and they won't cost you much.
  2. Tell me if I'm completely wrong. The idea of the altimiter in the Vista and 76s is to give you ACCURATE elevation, right? And it uses barometric pressure to do this, right? But it NEEDS altitude info to get the correct barometric pressure (as opposed to ambient pressure - see above), right? So does it take the triangulated elevation to get this info? That would say to me that the gps satellite altitude is about as accurate as the other....
  3. If you look at his profile the caption is "locationless Kytrex". Pretty funny I think.
  4. I recently found this horrible forum thread of two active cachers in Tennessee who wound up absolutely hating each other. It's awful. Geocaching tends to bring together people of very different opinions and personalities, who tend to be intelligent. It's easy for this mix to become volatile. Our caching 'community' around here is no exception. Fun "ribbing" can turn to something bad. We need to respect each other's differences and appreciate them. We're lucky to live where there is a geocaching community. It sounds like our get-togethers and things are pretty rare, compared to the rest of the country. Let's make sure we don't spoil any of that. See y'all at the BBQ!!!

  6. I think the "competition" between Ron and George is fun. I just hope is it for both of them also. Until my current job, I was always in sales. We would have friendly "competitions" to see who could sell the most that day or whatever, but it was never "real" competition. We were both winners. If George and Ron both feel the "breath of the other on the back of their neck" they may simply find more caches than they would otherwise. Again, I think it's fun to read about. You both are SO FAR ahead of most of us it's ridiculous. Plus, you both hide such great caches. If either of you stop having fun, let's fix whatever the problem is. Just my $0.02.

  8. The 45 was the first gps I owned, before geocaching, and during Selective Availability's heyday. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think the 45 will only allow you to enter coordinates to the nearest 1/100 of a minute, not 1/1000 of a minute like current models. From what I understand 1/1000 of a minute is about 4-6 feet, depending on where you live, so 1/100 resolution would only give you an 'accuracy' of about 40-60 feet, even if the gps is "dead on." This will always be a potential error. Personally, losing accuracy by tenfold on my own gps would make geocaching less fun. So I wouldn't use it. Look for a beater yellow eTrex, it will work SO MUCH better and shouldn't cost that much. Plus you can turn around and get maybe $40 for your 45. Just my opinion.
  9. No, they're only for PCs. A few people on these forums are running Macs with gps units. They use a USB to Serial adaptor and run VirtualPC software. Some have good luck - others don't.
  10. The Legend and Vista will show you where an address is and direct you toward it in a straight line only. And they will only do this if you add the appropriate mapping software, such as MetroGuide. MetroGuide is $175 on Garmin's website (less somewhere else I'm sure). Since the GPSV COMES WITH mapping software AND gives you TURN BY TURN directions, I think the V is a better deal. Common prices for the Legend are around $250. With mapping sotware you're at least at $400 with a decent deal on the maps (unless you can find them used). Apparently the GPSV can be found for a little over $400. The Vista is even MORE. The turn-by-turn is amazing, by the way.
  11. Are you seeing the basemap maybe? That map is never erased. It's part of the firmware. You will always have that no matter what.
  12. My son is expecting some kind of geocaching party soon. The guests will probably know nothing of geocaching, so it's going to be pretty simple. We're going to have it in a big local park, and have the items usually in a favor back scattered in 3 or more "caches." We're thinking that 2 or 3 teams of guests try to find their own 3 cache locations (all similar difficulty of course) faster than the other team(s). That way there'd be a kind of contest also. My son is only 9, so I will program all the coordinates ahead of time. It will be the only 3 waypoints in each gps unit. As for the invitation, my son is going to hold his brand new Legend (his bday present from all the family) and I'll take a picture of him holding it up close to the camera with his face blurred in the background (but not so blurred that you can't tell it's him). Then I'll superimpose with Photoshop the party info as if it's on the Garmin unit itself. Those are all the ideas I've come up with so far. I'm waiting to see if anyone chimes up with any more!
  13. When I was refering to creative caches, I meant more how they're hidden and how the titles and locations and descriptions refer to them. Sometimes even the container itself. A Daliesque thing, if you will. I wasn't refering necessarilly to what's INSIDE the cache, but what you have to do to find it.
  14. I sure would like to hear from them and how they first decided to contact someone about this, and what information they first came across...

  16. I don't see that option. I have 4.09 installed. Where is it?!? Thanks!

  18. then you choose File- Export. It will give you a dialog box asing you for a name and file type. Call it whatever you want, and drop the little box at the bottom down to select Delimited Text (.txt) as the file type. Then open Height, and use the little icon that looks like a text box and you can import the .txt file you just created. Hope that helps!

  20. I ordered a Street Pilot III from them the other day. Their website said they'd have them to ship in 2 days from then. I emailed them to ask if they knew if there'd be any further delays that they knew of and I got an email back saying, and I quote: "I'm not driving the boat from Taiwan. They'll get here when they get here." I thought that was kind of rude when I just had a simple question and had just placed an order for about $800. Might be an isolated incident, but they wound up sending me THE SAME email again about 20 minutes later. Just left me with a bad feeling. I cancelled the order and went to eBay and found what I was looking for for $750 from someone who was POLITE. My $0.02

  22. Yes, we should all "put this to bed now." Everything that can be said has been said. You're right on every point. But... I can't stop reading it! And now I'm responding to it again! Uggghhhh! Make .... me ..... STOP!
  23. You can cheat anything, but I don't. And I can check my own caches that I've hidden for signed logs. Of course you could have someone ELSE log that for you, but SOMEONE had to make it out there! I want locationless to be its own count NOT because of any cheating reason. I just think they're different and should be counted differently. That's all. Has nothing to do with cheating or not.
  24. I recently sold my GPSV to a - a - dare I say it - a Mac user. lol. Anyway, I told him I'd try to see what everyone is using (Macwise) to transfer MapSource data to and from their gps using the inferior computer system. Sorry, I'm kidding! Any help would be appreciated! -Randy
  25. For the simple reason it's not categorized on geocaching.com as a locationless cache. And the cache creater even calls it a virtual.
