  1. LO, I think a cache on private property would be great. I got an email back from the reporter and she said to call her Wednesday of next week and she would set something up. I emailed her about us all getting together... but I'm not sure what she's planned yet. She may want to go to a get together, and we could make one on the spur-of-the-moment if we had to. I would think that would be the best way for her to find out the most about it around here. Maybe someplace where there's a private property cache nearby? She seems very excited about writing this story, so this should be fun. Anyway, I'll be gone all weekend, but I'll post something as soon as I hear from her on Wednesday. Be on the lookout in case we have to set something up really quick! I keep forgetting to put my email on here. randy@jamzcheer.com Email me phone numbers, or email addresses, or just watch here for updates next week! -R

  3. Just to make it completely clear, I want EVERYONE to talk to this reporter. She just happened to contact me, and I'd like to see it happen. I'm thinking we can all get together somewhere, maybe even near a "famous" Central Valley Cache. I only asked for phone numbers so I could make a meeting happen. If she contacts me and says I want to meet you right away I'd like to be able to get hold of as many of us as possible. Any thoughts on this are ABSOLUTELY welcome. I don't want to take this thing over, but I'm willing to work to make it happen. Maybe we should get a logo made! lol Randy

  5. I was contacted last night by the recreational sports writer of the Bee. She wants to do a story on geocaching in this area. Was anyone else contacted? She emailed me directly, not through the geocaching site. Anyway, if I'm the only one who's been contacted, anyone who wants to be involved in this please email me your phone numbers so we might all get together for this story! I've already emailed her and left her a voice mail. I expect to hear from her today. I think this would be pretty cool, but I want to know who wants to be part of it. Someone may not want to and I want to know that before I start naming names! lol PS. I didn't know Tammi posted right when I did. I'll stop now. lol

  9. We just placed a cache here in our hometown last night. I don't know when it will be approved, but it's here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=32684&Nocache=0.7055475 We have a few of these little tupperware containers and plan to do a couple more, maybe after the weekend. We're trying to place them in interesting places around town. Turlock has recently "upgraded" the downtown area, and it's much nicer, so this cache will get you there. They're calling it "Visit HISTORIC downtown Turlock" I think that's pushing it a little, but it is nicer! lol

  11. Before the last event theObriens and we were talking about putting something on. Maybe we'll get those plans going again. Can't even think about it until after this weekend though. Have to drive 500 miles to the desert for work. Any caches in Brawley???

  13. Zach (my 9 year old) has really been enjoying the trouble some have had with Arrowhead! He's also excited that the "best cacher in California (Ron)" uses the same gps he does! He's really become good at finding caches, as long as they're not too high off the ground!! Anyone planning another get-together? Work is finally slowing down for me on the weekends, and I'd like to help...

  15. I have Garmin's TOPO, MetroGuide, CitySelect 4.00 and 4.01, etc. For the most part I have been VERY impressed with all of them. No, the TOPO isn't that detailed, but overlaying routes and waypoints from DeLorme's TOPO on it is fantastic. I don't know about the DETAIL of Magellan's maps, but the screen shots I've seen sure don't look as good as the ones on my V and GPSMAP76. Also, I think it's unfair to compare the much larger Magellan unit with the Vista. They use different antennas, so reception MUST be different. My 76 and V receive better than my son's little eTrex. I've also been reading that Magellan units can lose signal and not let you know for quite some time, so you may not know that you're not receiving good data. I would rather KNOW when I lose signal than have the gps "fool" me into thinking it's receiving better. I'm sure the SportTrak and Meridian series are great units. I wish I had an extra $300 to play with. I'd buy one and compare it with my Garmins. But I definitely think the V is a better buy than the Vista. Sure it's a little bigger, but it receives better, comes with great maps, autoroutes in the car and comes with the 12v adapter, data cable, and car mount.
  16. I didn't notice this until the most recent update, but I keep my V on the "prompted" setting for automatic recalculation. I don't want it recalculating a 500 mile route every time I pull over to fill up the tank. anyway, with my V on prompted, it automatically recalculates. So I put it on "OFF" and now it prompts me - most of the time. Occasionally it will just recalculate anyway. I've noticed it almost always recalculates automatically if it's JUST come up with a route and I'm not on it. If I've been following it for a while it prompts me. Also, if I get WAY off the route, even if I've said "NO" to the prompt it will recalculate. Remember, during all this it's set to "OFF" which shouldn't recalculate OR prompt me. Strange, but it doens't really affect the usability of the unit. I just don't like it recalculating on a tiny detour. Usually when it now prompts me and I say NO everything is cool, unless I get too far away. Anyone else experienced this? I've only been using City Select 4.01 recently. Haven't tried MetroGuide or CS4 yet to see if it's a map issue.
  17. For whatever reason ever since my first GPS (a Garmin GPS 45 in 1994), Garmin GPS units have always seemed to be designed better. Until the new line of Magellan units came out they were always so ugly! The Meridian and SportTrak line does look good finally. But Garmin's maps look better on their screens, they almost always have higher resolution... If I get a couple extra hundred bucks to play with soon, I'm going to get the CostCo deal with the camo Meridian and software JUST to compare the two. No one on these posts seems to own both brands. Having said that, I LOVE my GPSV and my MAP76. And my 9 year old son's yellow eTrex is great too. Now he wants a Legend so he can load MetroGuide and TOPO himself. lol.
  18. I don't know about your 3000+ mile problem, but I definitely don't like how easyGPS works. I always SAVE the files when I download them, and then I can merge all these files with a program called GeoBuddy (www.geobuddy.com). GeoBuddy will save the merged file in many formats, the one I use is Garmin MapSource. This works really well for downloading hundreds of caches at one time into your GPS. I assume Magellan users can use GeoBuddy with their mapping software also.

  20. We tried to go to the new location with the unsavory activity to get the two new caches there and to give our $0.02 worth about the whole situation, but it was closed. It said the lot was completely full. what's up with that? We'll have to go back sometime when it's not so busy. by the way, we've got most of the Tuolumne River caches, and have been there a few times and haven't noticed anything suspect. Luck of the draw I guess...

  22. if I were to only get one GPS, it would without question be the Garmin GPS V. I'm sure you'll find LOTS of support from other users on this. It tracks really well, is the only inexpensive gps to give real turn-by-turn autorouting directions by itself, comes with a car mount, data cable AND 12V cigarette lighter adapter. AND it comes with MapSource and City Select (now version 4.01 - very good). all these extras would cost well over $150 on another gps model, so the $399 or so it goes for is very cheap (in my opinion). It is an amazing unit.
  23. You can do everything with the eTrex that you can with Garmin's better (or more expensive, should I say) gps units except load maps. My son has the eTrex, and I have a V and Map76. He hooks up his little eTrex and transferes his tracks daily into MapSource. Then he can see where he's been, etc. He also looks up places nearby that he likes (like the video store) and puts them in as waypoints on the computer. There's also a great program that will plot the eTrex's tracks in 3D and show you elevation profiles. I couldn't remember where I got it, so I uploaded it to my own site, if anyone wants it: http://www.randyjensenphoto.com/gps/height_dis.zip He kept his eTrex on during a recent trip through the mountains, and totally loved seeing the elevation. Also, another friend of mine puts his eTrex in his RC plane. Then he can see the route in 3D of the plane when he gets back home.

  25. All of you guys should have used a GPS 45 back in the day (around mid-1994). You would place the GPS outside with as clear a view of the sky as you could. Then you'd go back in the house, wait about 15 MINUTES, then come back out and HOPE it locked on at least 3 satellites. No joke. ALL the new gps units are great, if you've experienced the "old skool" daze. The first time I showed my father-in-law (who still has a 45) my 9-year-old son's yellow eTrex, he just about fell over. It locked in about 10 seconds....
