  1. Thanks! That was cool getting to the first big number! Tried to make it 51 last night but couldn't find "I think I smell chicken." It's only supposed to be a 1 1/2 difficulty, but we couldn't find it. We'll add to our 50 soon enough!
  2. Just sold my GPSV and ordered a Street Pilot III. I'd like comments from anyone who has one. I already have a GPSMAP76, which is my "when I get out of the car and go find the cache" gps, so I figured it would be nice to have the color display, more memory, etc of the SPIII since the V was now pretty much permanently in the car. Just want to know what to expect... Thanks in advance.
  3. George, That's amazing that someone would just say that. I also, like you, check out lots of forums and give my $.02, and have never had someone make any comment like that. Most people appreciate an experienced viewpoint, that's why they post in the first place. At least his reply wasn't TOO nasty. A little big-headed maybe. lol GA, Great post. I missed the whole thing and only got the edited versions when I got back into town. Any possibility you'll be at the BBQ? Just curious. I'd like to meet you.

  5. I hope to see some of you Bay Area cachers at our BBQ coming up. I know it's a little way to drive, but I wanted to make sure you all knew about it. It's here (when approved): http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=33542&Nocache=0.7055475 See you there hopefully! Randy
  6. I've posted the BBQ date and location - but it's not approved yet. It's here: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=33542&Nocache=0.7055475 I'm looking forward to this because we had to miss the last one! -R

  8. Just placed another cache last night. It's not approved quite yet, but here it is... http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=33500 With the recent Ace O Sob story, I can't wait to hear if something funny happens at this one! Probably won't though; it's not all that busy here. But you never know! Also the 14th is pretty much set for the BBQ. I will post an event cache probably tomorrow about it. I've had offers to help - thank you! I just might take you up on it!! Randy

  10. The Pilot III is for car ONLY, it's not meant to be handheld. it's color, has a huge (by gps standards) screen. The V has 19MB of internal memory which holds a LOT of map detail, but the SPIII has an external 128MB card and fast programmer (the V's 19MB takes a while to load). I LOVE the V. It's amazing. But I also have a GPSMAP 76, which is a GREAT handheld unit, so I always leave the V in the car, and the SPIII is just a little cooler. lol. There really is NO better all-around gps than the V though. It's been incredible in the car, caching, etc. I just have to have the latest and greatest. lol

  12. I know this isn't the most appropriate spot to do this, but I'm thinking about selling my GPSV with full USA unlock so I can get the Street Pilot III. I don't really want to ship it off (like on eBay), and it would be great to find someone looking for a good deal on one close by. I also have copies of TOPO and MetroGuide in addition to City Select 4.00 and 4.01 for it. I hope I don't upset anyone using this forum to try to sell something!!! Sorry if so! Randy

  14. Yes, TOPO will work with the V. You will see CitySelect only if it's enabled, but you can temporarilly "turn it off" and TOPO will show below it. BTW, I'm thinking of selling my V (with everything including full USA unlock - so it's a deluxe) to get a Street Piolt III. I already have a GPSMAP 76 for handheld. Anyone interested, let me know. randy@jamzcheer.com The nice thing about the TOPO maps is that they're relatively small, so a lot will fit.
  15. I was just in Brawley, California over the weekend and I got readings from -130 to -150, which is very accurate for that area. My topo maps were within 10-15 feet almost the entire time. From there we went to Palm Springs to the top of the San Juanito mountain, at over 8500 feet, so I got to see both extremes! I'm going to plot it with a program I have that does elevation profiles and 3D profiles. Should be interesing! My experience when driving with my GPSV is that the elevation is extremely accurate. When I see a "summit elevation XXXX feet" sign I usually check it and it's almost always within 10 feet or even closer! Pretty amazing I think.
  16. This is only tentative right now, but how does the early evening of September 14 (Saturday) look for everyone? I will change the date if it's a problem for too many.... I think this is going to be a joint venture between us and TheObriens, but it would be nice if everyone brought something. I think meat and chips will be covered... I'll update everyone when I know more. If you can go or not, please email me directly at randy@jamzcheer.com and let me know!!! Randy

  18. Photoshop 6, 7 and Elements all allow you to "Save for web." This allows you to see the effects of .jpg compression in real time, allows you to adjust the dimensions of the image, and doesn't try to save over the original file. I've also noticed that saving .jpgs this way almost always creates a smaller file than the standard Save As command, with no noticable degradation. It shows you the original .psd (Photoshop format) uncompressed image on one side and you can compare it to the one you're compressing. It also shows you the file size so you'll be sure to not go over 90k or so... Do you have 7 George? If not, and you want it, you know who to get it from...

  20. Pepper, I'm more familiar with Photoshop than I'd like to admit. lol. I use it daily at work and elsewhere. We're planning to have a bbq sometime soon so hopefully you'll be there and I'll give you some pointers. Randy PS. You could always email me also. randy@jamzcheer.com There's a really easy way to do what you want - among other things...

  22. Just got back into town. Wow, a lot has happened. I updated Ace O Sob to include a warning. George, the reporter's name is Clare Noonan. Is this the same one? I'd like a heads up also if so. I plan to call her this afternoon. We're talking bbq soon. I'll keep you posted when we have a free weekend. We went to Brawley over the weekend. It was 114 and HUMID! Never sweated so much in my life. There are very few caches near there and I can see why. You'd have to be way hardcore to cache there.

  24. Since I'll be gone, everyone discuss how this story thing should happen... I'm up for whatever, and I'll suggest whatever the 'collective' thinks. I'll get back into town on Tuesday and go through the posts and my email and figure out what to tell this lady... I am glad it seems like everyone wants to be a part of it. See y'all next week! R
