  6. Hi All

Sarah Farmer, weather presenter at BBC South Today based in Southampton, has contacted the GAGB.

She is researching a possible feature on Geocaching and is looking for people to talk to about the growth of the activity and its popularity in the South. As well as the real enthusiasts, her aim is to find unusual case studies, i.e. the oldest/youngest Geocachers, or perhaps someone who may have been to the most caches etc.

BBC South today covers Southern England including Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Sussex, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Surrey, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

If you are interested in participating her contact details are: Sarah.Farmer@bbc.co.uk

  7. to GAGB members, had an email from you last night to say that you had uploaded to the calender, the event for home coming scotland, mega 2014?? event. Thanks for the publicity. The next meeting is on March 5th, can we publish here the outcome and any further developments, as this is only a caching idea at the moment, which is moving very fast.

    regards

    Rose-&-Thistle

    Hi Rose & Thistle,

The GAGB forums are a very open and welcoming community, please feel free to add any updates you feel are appropriate. Alternatively drop an email to gagbcommittee@gagb.co.uk, we can consider any news you have to offer for future newsletters and the website. You may also want to consider the UK Geocaching Podcast.

  8. I have taken up the self appointed role of making sure UK CITO has its profile raised, with a view to bigger and better in 2011.....

2010 has seen 15 ‘CITO’ events held across the UK by the Geocaching community resulting in:

545 – Participants involved in litter collections

595 – Bags of litter collected

    30m² – Himalayan Balsam cleared

Plus numerous bulky items (tyres, bikes etc.) removed.......Congratulations to all of the event organisers.

I will be looking to raise the profile of the CITO next year and with your help surpass this years excellent figures.

If you are yet to attend an event the first of the year is currently 15th January (check out the GAGB calendar regularly).

If you have a hankering to organise an event - Do It! - I have a list of contacts who I am sure will be able to help you with advice.

Don't forget you can CITO every time you are out caching.

  9. My understanding is that this particular NT site currently has no geocaching offering and will be starting from scratch. Based on this I can only give you my experiences of the Clent Hills (NT).

Clent Hills have five (5) themed caches that they use to run geocaching 'taster' sessions last Sunday in the month – this involves pre-booked groups (Scouts, Brownies etc) loaning an NT GPS (deposit paid) and, after a Geocaching briefing, setting out for an afternoon of caching (unsupported). My volunteer role does not involve me in this.

The five caches each have a theme, with educational cards and activities, which the groups partake in. Clent has the themes:

    Soil erosion

    Grasses

    Clouds

    Bugs

    Trees

Each cache has a bag with National Trust contents to carry out these activities (Information cards, crayons, sketchbook, magnifying glass, tape measure etc), these are clearly marked as not swappable – although they do go missing!

My current role – to maintain the caches; ensure they have the relevant NT contents prior to the Sunday 'taster' sessions and to manage them as my own under an NT Geocache account. Apart from my time, there is no other outlay from me; this can be as little as one hour per month.

There are obviously lessons learned from this:

    • I was not involved in the original cache set up. This meant they were easy finds for the 'taster' groups but very vulnerable to muggling.

    • The 'taster' groups are encouraged to bring swaps, due to a lack of experience; this has meant geocoins/ travel bugs going missing!

    • The NT activity tools were included in the general cache contents and regularly went missing.

Plans are to develop the NT offering further with caches of a more challenging nature for team building.

I hope this gives you some insight into the role, let me know if you would like some contact details.

    Regards

  10. Hi All,

I currently donate around 4 hours per month working as a geocaching volunteer for a National Trust property in North Worcestershire. I have been approached with a view to getting expressions of interest from cachers local(ish) to Woodchester Park, Nr Stroud, Gloucestershire (Link) who would be willing to volunteer some time to work along similar lines as myself.

If your interested drop me a PM and I'll start the ball rolling.

  11. Its good to see such a positive response from members of the geocaching community, its times like these that you realise what a well balanced bunch we are!

Jacaru - I'm fully supportive in what ever actions you see fit to take, all the best!

  12.

I think I have an email template somewhere that a committee member from the GAGB created, give me a shout if you want a copy :grin:

uk89's request may seem daft, but its daft requests like that forced Groundspeak into a corner which heavily contributed to the death of iCache.

    Yawn....................

  13. I believe your Alderney event is on there if my memories serves right
It does; sorry, missed it as I flicked through. Here are the others:

  14. Anyway, having hacked the Groundspeak servers :) I then proceeded to open up my regular weekly notifications email and spent over an hour manually clicking on each event link, copying the details into the GAGB calendar and saving.

What we have is a calendar view of the events so far arranged across the UK, Ireland and various offshore tax havens (Simply <_< )

As I believe the vast majority of cachers get this email every week I am simply transferring it into a more visually useful format. Ideally I'd like to see all events logged in here by the organisers but I'm more than happy to keep this updated as a useful resource.

Incidentally, I think iCache is a valuable site and had no idea things would escalate into some petty 'rattles out the pram' sulk.

    Keep caching!

  15. Any chance of adding other British (but non-UK) events on; I'm thinking of the Isle of Man and the Channel Isles, where I have some next month. Otherwise, excellent work! Thanks for the update :)

  16. Hi All,

Just for information: I am trying to maintain a calendar of all forthcoming events across the UK & Ireland in the GAGB forums.

    GAGB

    - So if you have day trips or holidays planned take a look and see if there's an event you could take in.

    - If your planning an event please feel free to check out any clashes and add your event details to the calendar.

    Regards
