  1. According to the Arkansas State Parks director, Greg Butts, the Administrative Rules Committee favorably reviewed the policy directive on June 3rd. Details and permit should be out to the parks by the end of the month. Greg is supposed to send me a copy of the policy when it's published. He also said that he's looking forward to visiting cachers!
  2. Wow! Everyone is playing nice today! We've grown!

  5. quote:Originally posted by Jolly B Good:I like "stepped" hints. Say 1 to 5 hints (determined by the cache's difficulty) which start out vague and progressively give more clues. That's the approach we took on this cache. I like the "stepped" hints, too!
  6. We've been caching for over a year now, and we only have about 20 finds. However, we found 8 in one day a couple of weekends ago! For us, that's a huge number!
  7. Found it! Looked all over the forums for hours. Finally looked down and there it was! It's always in the last place you look, huh? Took leisure suit (for an important job interview today) and left a Popeil Pocket Fisherman and a book entitled "<Please Delete This>: The Thread That Almost Wasn't".

Tried this with a cache placed recently and it would not be allowed as the micros get placed in illegal places. I don't understand. Am I being thick or what? Surely you only wanted to give away something like a bunch of film cans with a log sheet or what ever inside. They would still need to be approved on a one at a time basis..... Or have I got this wrong? Can't speak for bigredmed, but that's exactly what I was thinking about. Just a bunch of micros made up (say, 35mm film canisters) with a log book and pencil inside. Finders would be on their own, as far as hiding and getting approval. This would just save them the trouble of assembling the actual cache. Of course, as Northern-Lights said, the main benefit would be that it might nudge someone to place a new micro (or micros) in our area! I'm sure the cache would eventually evolve to the point of being filled with other items, but these "micro kits" would be cheap enough that we could restock the cache frequently. Plus, assembly would be a snap, since we'd be doing several at once..... Hmmmm.... I think I've talked myself into it!
  9. We searched for a long while for a cache that was a 1/1. Finally decrypted the clue and it said, "Too easy for a clue." AAAARRRRGGGHHH! Now, there are different theories as to how revealing the clue should be. Some people will say that the purpose of the clue is to tell you precisely where the cache is when you can't find it otherwise. Other say that the clue should only be a vague hint. I guess I'm somewhere in the middle. I want the clue to point me in the right direction, but it's no fun if the clue tells you exactly where to look. IMHO, coming up with a nice clue is almost an art form. And, I would add, is one of the key elements of a memorable cache.
  10. Auction ends at $50,922. Don't suspect that teajay101 will ever see the money, though...
  11. Great accomplishment and an outstanding web site! Thanks to Jeremy and the crew for feeding our obsession!
  12. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:A CD cache is a good idea, but even those degrade. You can seed it with some decent, contemporary CD's and some classics, but pretty soon it's filled with stuff like Milli Vanilli Live at Madison Square Garden, William Shatner Sings Gershwin, Bo Donaldson and the Heywood's Greatest Hits and The Best of REO Spedwagon. Hey, now! Wait a minute! I'd take REO and Shatner out of a CD cache! REO because I actually like them and Shatner because, well..., because... ummmmm.... THE HUMOR!!! That's it! Nothing like a little Shatner singing, "Tambourine Man" to put me in a good mood...
  13. quote:Originally posted by solohiker:I am going to get off my duff and saturate one of the local State parks with caches. I'm with you. We should know something on the state parks issue sometime this month. We were thinking of doing a BookCrossing.com cache and a CD cache. I like the idea of pre-made micro containers in the cache, as well. Maybe that would encourage more caches in our area? I know it worked for us. We plan to use a micro container that we found in a cache last week (thanks, Mustard Devil!) to place a cache hopefully this week!
  14. quote:Originally posted by Jomarac5:Since the first two of my questions have basically been answered, I pose the third question once more -- do we as cachers, need to mark or identify these known locations to avoid placing caches there in the future? On the contrary, I'd think that we (as cachers) would do well to make MORE caches in areas like this. With more traffic in these areas, it will become a less appealing spot for "that other group".
  15. This Yahoo group is the closest thing we have to an Arkansas Geocachers page...
  16. quote:Originally posted by GeoCraig:It looks like the closest cache is at least 40 miles away. There are some caches around Rich Mountain, which is where Camp Pioneer is located. Check here...
  17. quote:Originally posted by nostafa:it would be great if the listings advised of the approximate length of the hike. Would help greatly in planning the cache. For instance it would be beneficial to know if the cacher is in for a 2 mile hike or a 10 mile hike. Yep, I'd like to see this on the cache page as well, along with an option to include other things, such as parking coords and an indication as to whether the cache is wheelchair/stroller accessible. Maybe when the new site goes online, we'll see some of these features...
  18. I've said this before, and I'll say it again here: In a cache-poor area like we have here, any cache is a good cache.
  19. quote:Originally posted by The Leprechauns:"Historical" would make a good cache _attribute_, but not a good cache _type._ That's because a historical cache will fit within one of the existing cache types (virtual, traditional, locationless, etc.) and it is desireable to keep the number of cache types down to a minimum. As a cache attribute, like "dog friendly" or "handicapped accessible," I'm all for it. There are plenty of good caches that happen to have a historical angle to them. They're among my favorites. But they're still part of a game called geocaching. Cache attributes are almost certain to be a feature of the new geocaching.com. It may be a bit late to add this one to the list of attributes, but who knows? It's easier to add an attribute than a cache type. x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x Some mornings, it just doesn't pay to chew through the leather straps. - Emo Phillips Absolutely! I like the "attribute" concept as well. This would also give us the opportunity to post other features of the cache that one might want to include. Specifically I'm thinking of things such as parking coords, whether the cache is stroller/wheelchair accessible, length of hike, etc... Not that you would HAVE to put these in, but to have that option would be nice.
  20. Me, too! That would be a great feature!
  21. quote:Originally posted by Cache_us_if_you_can:I guess we're lucky here in northern California... A place down the road from us sells ammo boxes $3 each or 2/$5, and we don't have to pay shipping! Same here. We can get them for $3.50 all day long...
  22. First of all, thanks to all of you who are willing to share your knowlege with the group in this forum! I've been lurking for a while, and haven't seen this addressed. I know these are probably pretty innane questions from a relative newbie, but here goes: Most of the marks that we've found so far (not that many) seem to be placed pretty randomly. There seems to be no real pattern. I know that some were placed at high points (I'm guessing for line-of-sight) and there seem to be an overwhelming majority of them along railroads. What I'm wondering is: What caused the marks to be originally placed where they are, and why are some marks very close to each other, while others are far apart? My second question: How were/are the marks used for surveying? I originally thought that surveyors used the disks to mount a tripod in a precise location, but then we found a mark mounted vertically in a bridge abutment. How would a mark like this be used?

GO and be FREE! Uh... yeah.
  24. quote:Originally posted by BrianSnat:Those people have to get it in their head that their reason for geocaching is different, but not necessarily superior. There ya' go! This has been hashed and rehashed, but it all comes down to the question, "Why do you geocache?" As for us, we believe that if you're in this for the "treasure", you're probably not gonna get rich. However, we DO enjoy finding (and leaving) nice items every once in a while. I guess you could say that we're "on the fence" on this issue. On related subject, I've seen some people say that when they find "junk" in a cache, they remove it and replace it with "something better". In fact, we have done this in the past as well. I think it's worth mentioning, however, that one must be careful when judging something as "junk". Everybody has a different opinion (as evidenced by the success of garage sales).
