  1. Garmin Legend Magellan Sportrak Pro Axim x3i PocketPC GPXSonar GSAK MS Streets and Trips Pocket Streets
  2. I know this has been discussed a few times, but I've never really seen an approver or GC admin give their opinion. Markwell, maybe you could help me with that? The GC guidelines page states: "Caches will be quickly archived if we see the following:" One of the things in the list is: "- Caches that are buried. If a shovel, trowel or other “pointy” object is used to dig, whether in order to hide or to find the cache, then it is not appropriate." My questions: Would a fake sprinkler head fall into this category? How about a cache buried in the sand (no "pointy" object is needed)? Or, what if the hole is already there, and you just put the container in it and cover it with dirt? Or leaves? I guess what I'm looking for is a little clearer definition of the guideline. I'd like to hear from everyone, but especially approvers or GC admin, if any of you happen to read this. We have a cache that would fall into this category, and rather than risk an archival, figured we should just simply ask. I'm sure our local approver has an opinion (we haven't asked yet), but I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks, too.
  3. I was in the middle of my reply and then started reading briansnat's reply. I'll ditto EXACTLY what HE said. Thanks, briansnat for saving me some work.
  4. We've done it, too. Went to take my brother-in-law geocaching for the first time. I'm thinking, "I'll take him to one of OUR caches. That way we won't have any chance of getting skunked his first time out..." WRONG! We looked for about 20 minutes and finally decided that it had been muggled. Luckily, I decided to wait a week or so to archive it. Two days later, it was found, just where it should be.
  5. Sounds good to me. Eraseek's suggestion for Minis sounds about right on the attribute description. I would add large prescription bottles and paintball canisters to that list.
  6. I can tell immediately which ones are bad by the size. The good ones are around 1.5 MB, while the bad ones are usually around 10-15 KB. It seems to be happening to me about once a week...
  7. I called Garmin about a joystick problem, but I did post here first. (BTW, Garmin repaired my Legend under warranty, even though it was actually about 3 months out of warranty. Kudos!)
  8. This particular PQ runs every day and once again, the problem went away the following day. I don't think the problem is with my PQ. Maybe a particular day?
  9. Twice in the past month, our PQs have contained erroneous information. The first time, I got caches for another state (CA instead of AR) and today my PQ contained only four caches (one in Missouri and three in Illinois). The first time this happened, it cleared up the next day without me changing anything. Anybody else having these type problems?
  10. Love the brochure, CYBret!! I'm still having a little trouble getting this thing to fold properly. Anyone else having this problem? What am I doing wrong?
  11. We got our Legend back a couple of days ago. Everything works great. Major KUDOS to Garmin and thanks to all of you who led us in the right direction!
  12. Cool! Hey, I just noticed that we've got an approved cache in Bell Slough WMA, and they didn't even mention it! Oh well...
  13. I use magnets out of old hard drives. They are small and very strong. In fact, I can put one on the back of my hand and it will pick up another one through my hand. I have access to a few ruined hard drives, so this is a pretty cheap solution for me.
  14. WOW!! I took your advice and gave Garmin a call. They agreed to repair my Legend under warranty, even though it's about 3 months out of warranty! KUDOS to the good folks at Garmin, and thanks for the advice!!! They also said they would have my unit back to me within two weeks. Can't ask for much better service than that...
  15. We LOVE the new TimeStamp button!! This software just keeps getting better and better...
  16. We've had our Legend about 14 months (just out of warranty... figures.) Just started having problems with the joystick. It won't work to move left or right. Up/down still works just fine. Garmin wants 99 bucks to service it, but I just can't see paying that. I'm willing to open it up and check it out for myself, but I don't really wanna do this without some idea about what to look for. Has anyone else had this problem with the eTrex series? Any advice for me?
  17. I posted this in another thread recently. Check out the Arkansas State Parks web site. They have a list of fun things to do in Arkansas State Parks. The last item in the list is GEOCACHING!
  18. Check this list of things to do in Arkansas State Parks. The last item is the most interesting, of course... This just shows how far we've come in the last year or so in Arkansas. Thanks to all of you who helped make this a reality!!!
  19. I'm running a separate query for each day, therefore the names are different. That's a good point, though, and would solve the problem. The only reason I'm doing this is because I was told that the queries would get higher priority if they were separate (a new query for each day). Would I be better off just running one query and set it to run for the days I want?
  20. I have recently become a premium member and am taking full advantage of the Pocket Queries (I LOVE those things!!!) Since we have gone paperless, I'm now trying to automate the preparation work as much as I can. I've set up a DOS batch file to unzip my PQ and copy the GPX file to my Pocket PC. This batch file also converts the waypoints to Streets & Trips format, so that I can see them on the map on my Pocket PC. The problem I'm having is this: Let's say that I have a PQ that runs the same query three times a week. When I run the batch file, I want to process the LATEST query, but not the other two. Anyone out there doing this, or something similar? What's the process that you use?
  21. This is an excellent resource!!! Great job! I can tell that you've spent a lot of time on the design and presentation. I'll add it to the geocaching materials that we have. I think we'll be using this a lot (friends, landowners, potential converts, etc.) I, too, am having a problem with the folds. In order to make the back of the brochure even, the left column seems to come out quite a bit smaller than the right and middle columns. Anybody else having this problem?

    Pocket Query

Agreed! I'm a network tech at a university and we do the same thing here. I think the problem is that my ISP is clearly NOT worth their salt. They've proven that over and over again.

    Pocket Query

Progress report: I've checked with my ISP and discovered that they are currently dropping ALL messages with a .ZIP attachment (due to the recent MYDOOM virus). Since the uncompressed file would probably be around 4MB, I doubt that they would deliver that, either. The support person could not say when or even IF this policy would be changed. Therefore, I'm looking for some suggestions from you guys. Here are the options that I can think of: 1) Change the delivery method to uncompressed and reduce the range of my query, thereby reducing the size of the email. 2) Have the query sent to a different email address. 3) Contact Groundspeak and see if they might consider offering .RAR, or some other compression alternative (although I can't really see it being feasible for them to change the web site for just one person, or even for a few, for that matter...) 4) Do nothing and just forget about getting PQs for a while. Any other ideas?
