  1. When I click on an icon in Google Earth for a cache exported from GSAK as a GPX file and imported into Google Earth, I get "unpublished". I used to get the cache page. This has been happening for a while and I can't seem to find a forum thread anywhere on it. Can anyone tell me what is going on and how to work around it?

Have you dowloaded and installed the Geocache Browser for Google Earth?

Find the download link within the Google Mapping Features pane of your

My Account page. The link is -

    Google Geocache Browser

Not recently, and haven't had any troubles clicking thru the icons from the geocaching.com klm, just the icons from the GSAK gpx file format. But I'll give it a try!

  3. Say, I hadn't noticed the new cache containers on the geocaching.com website before today:

    http://shop.Groundspeak.com/productList.cfm?categoryID=13

They look pretty good, except I think I still prefer to put cammo tape on my lock 'n' locks and match containers. I guess that's not as "safe" since people can't see inside them. But I'd rather not have random people find them in the first place. Has anyone found an effective plastic paint instead of cammo tape?

By the way, a couple people have asked me about the cammo tape I use. I ordered a box of cammo tape a while back from this source and I've been extremely happy with how it looks:

    http://www.identi-tape.com/camo.htm

I mostly use the "desert" color, of course. I'm still not convinced the tape holds up to the elements long-term, though.

Since I am on the subject of containers, I never put ammo boxes out without painting over the ammo labels, and then I sometimes put a "geocaching.com" sticker on the outside. I partially paint them with a textured brown metal spray paint like this one:

    http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=31

The combination of green and brown makes them blend in pretty well under lemonadeberry trees, for example.

  4. I visited my From the Earth to the Moon puzzle series final cache today and discovered that, as reported, a really nice coin and a jeep I'd put there in Oct. 2007 were gone. I doubt this cache was muggled, I think it is the work of our local geocacher/coin stealer. This coin stealer must be smart enough to solve some puzzles, go there and solve a final puzzle, or someone gave them the coords. They weren't hard puzzles, but that does narrow it down a bit.

I think a lot of coins go missing because inexperienced geocachers think they are trading items, but I think it is clear that too many coins go missing in this area for that to be all of it. What a shame! It is so neat to find a beautiful coin in a cache and to be able to pass it along.

Would the coin stealer mind telling us what pleasure they get from having all these coins?

  5. I see that there is a cruel streak in many of you, who seem to take joy in making fun of my dyslexic inability to type.

Ummmm...you are only just noticing this now??? :)

Better to be dyslexic than to be dyxlesic, I always say...

What do you get when you cross an insomniac, an agnostic and dyslexic?

  6. I'm actually a big believer in logging "needs archived" on caches that look like they are gone and it looks like the owner isn't going to get around to doing anything about them, expecially when there are a bunch of DNFs and the owner hasn't disabled it. I also do it just to get the reviewers attention on something. Or as a kick in the pants to the owner to replace it because I want to go do it when its replaced. But I do it under my own name, on a pretty random basis, and without the histrionics.

This Kent Allard guy is doing way too much of it in an amazingly annoying way. Oh well, I'm sure or or she means well.

  7. ;) I hate it when my road is closed ALL DAY because BP shot at someone and the area is a crime scene and I can't get home and my GPS is at the house and I can't take the back way 'cause John has the 4WD. So what did I do? I did what all crazy people would do: parked at Steele Canyon High School and bushwhacked my way up the mountain...Changed out of the dirty clothes, grabbed my GPS and my bike and rode down the hill...Highway Patrol let me by..I guess CSI was wrapping up..but I would have ridden around them if I had to..back to the High School, loaded the bike and went geo-caching!!!! :)

    That's awesome!

  8. Does anyone know "Bruce and Jeremy" aka "Cheesehead"? Their Adobe Falls (GC2CE9) cache may soon be archived if they don't respond to the administrator very soon. Forced adoptions are no longer being allowed, so if there's anyway to contact them, we need to do it soon.

We have replaced the container for them, and will publish Adobe Falls II if indeed this one is archived, but we'd much prefer to see the original cache page remain.

Any ideas on how to contact these folks are welcome!

Sorry but I can't help you. It looks like TPTB are trying to purge caches that no longer have active owners. I guess there are a lot of them. They recommend having a link on the new cache page to view the history of the predecessor.

No forced adoptions? I hadn't heard that, but I found the thread:

    http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...5&hl=forced

Having read most of it, skimmed some of it, I still don't get why Groundspeak felt they had to make the change. I adopted a cache by forced adoption because the cache was way off in the coords and the owner was MIA. Seemed like a reasonable policy.

  9. Just a quick note that I just archived most of my GC's (too many to manage). Sorry for any inconvenience in advance. I had a blast with them and will pick up containers as soon as I can.

Travelita--I just noticed that and was meaning to ask you why! Such a shame, so many of them were in really beautiful locations around Mission Bay. I was working my way through getting them but hadn't finished. I can understand about there being too many to manage, but it doesn't look like you kept many active at all...

  10. Time to party!

Somwhere in Tecolote Canyon the 5th and last golden ticket to Mr Wanka's Chocolate Factory was located. Oooops, wrong story.

Congrats to Tom for being FTF on Tecolote "Puzzle" Canyon #20 - Finale! :P:):)

Awesome Tom... and I know exactly where that bush in the picture is! :P

    TA

    Very Cool! :P Congratulations!!!

    Congrats Tom, you earned it.

  11. Can someone please show a screenshot of a cache map of where this is?

I believe that this is roughly the area affected. If I can find an actual map, I'll post an update...

Please note: The locations of the "Dits" caches shown above are not the actual location of the caches!

I went out there after work and didn't find any explanatory signs posted yet but there is a whole lot of brand new orange nylon fencing out there.

Also, I found some information on the web that basically confirms that this development will connect the end of Carmel Mountain Road with Duck Pond (more or less what I show on the image above...)

Well, I guess one of us should probably go out and collect the containers for the Dits, since Shandon doesn't appear to be active. They were small ammo boxes, as I recall. Those were among the first 20-30 puzzles I solved--fun!

Congratulations on your 1000th. Here's wishing many more thousands in the future.

Yep, congrats Triple Crown!! A bit cold but fun hike today!!

    Whoo Hoo, Rob!!! 1000!!!

Congrats, Rob! I came on this thread to make sure this milestone hadn't passed unnoticed--no worries there!

  13. It looks like Unknown to U/Chaotic Cacher's habit of placing caches in plain view of muggles has finally caught up with him/us:

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...a0-b7d98ad07be7

I did a drive-by of that one recently and was glad I skipped it! I wouldn't have wanted to be surrounded by eight people with guns! It was in the median in plain view of a security guard so I skipped it and put it on my ignore list (along with about 25 other U to U's).

  14. You may safely dispose of the following calibers by sending them to me: .22LR, .308 Winchester, 7MM Rem Mag, .380, or .44 Mag.

And since I only have pre 1900s guns, I will take your .45-70 rounds

If you see any .577 cal cartridges like the three on the left of this picture you can send them to me.

.577 cal Minie' Balls (see below) are also gladly accepted...

How big of caliber do you need to take down a polar bear, anyway? :)
