  1. I love that floppy disk icon, guess that's for saving your track to a 3 1/2" floppy
  2. City Navigator, auto mount & Montana gives spoken street names
  3. Slim, you of all people should know that you can drive a JEEP to a fillin' station, but you can't make it pump.
  4. I don't think the "extra bulk" is going to kill you on LP's. Maybe dropping your expensive Montana on the tarmac of a parking lot might change your mind. You can add a carabiner to the GizzMoVest with a: Black Diamond Oval Carabiner Clip it to a beltloop, and you can rotate it to view it without unclipping it, plus you have the leash to prevent you from losing it if you do unclip it. The other photo looks like a packstrap with an S carabiner. Drop by an REI or other sport shop that carries climbing gear.
  5. All Montana models have the lanyard connector. Why would you purchase a GizzMoVest case and not use it? Kind of defeats the purpose.
  6. it's kind of disappointing that there aren't some better apps out there that would a basic handheld a run for the money. BTW, if you get the opportunity on your next jaunt, snag some cloud pics and post them to this thread
  7. Yes that was yesterday's, I thought that's what you were asking about. You want today? Let's see what we can provide for you: How's the Motion-X? Can you adjust tracking interval settings like you can on your eTrex?
  8. Are you able to download a .gpx of the track? The following sequence is suspect: I don't know how you've got that bad boy packed, ever crash or have to ditch? For field use, I use the LZL method. 1. Liquipel tablet treatment. 2. Zagg black out kit. 3. Lifeproof nüüd case.
  9. If you haven't done so yet, download and install BaseCamp from GARMIN here: GARMIN BaseCamp.Next, give this GPSFileDepot map a look: California TOPO. You can get direct help from the GPSFileDepot website by creating a free account and logging into their forum here: GPSFileDepot forum
  10. That's how I ever did it. Generally, backup the device to BaseCamp for Macintosh, clear the GPSr, then send a fresh load. Worked with all 4 eTrex Vista HCx units I had. The old eTrex Vista's didn't work with BaseCamp for Macintosh as they were serial, the Vista HCx the OP has uses USB and works with BaseCamp. As far as Mass Storage Mode, see page 38 of your Vista HCx manual. You do not use this mode to access the internal memory where the waypoints are stored, it's used to access the archived tracks saved to the datacard among other tasks.
  11. Yes, the Garmin Montana will do all this. UTM posistion format, driving directions (you will want City Navigator or 24k Topo for your area & the powered auto mount for spoken directions). In auto profile and in the auto mount, it's like a nüvi, except you can also have BirdsEye images (etc) that a nüvi doesn't do. Great for caching.
  12. You will want to set up your Automotive Profile with City Navigator Active, and the TOPO off, and then you Recreational Profile with City Navigator deactivated and the TOPO Active. This is how your GPS and the maps were intended to be used. Any issues with using the TOPO maps, please post to the GPSFileDepot forum where the folk that have painstakingly created the TOPO can assist you.
  13. I don't think they have the 49 state version on DVD, if you want DVD, it's North America.
  14. Might also be the sensor, my Montana 650t and Oregon 450 have never had any issues with ANT+, but then again I only have Garmin ANT+ sensors.
  15. Go with the Oregon 450, within you budget and available currently.
  16. How are you going to get to the cache if the GPS is kept in the car mounted on the windshield? Maybe he plans to drive right up to the cache, more likely, he'll use his handheld:
  17. Google Earth is commonly off by 30 feet, sometimes hundreds of feet for a number of reasons. I like and use Google Earth and have maybe 10+ years experience with it. It's pretty good within the limits of the technology.
  18. As of Feb 27 2013 Update includes: Cloud support (GARMIN CLOUD) OREGON 600 series support Fixed reported app crashes Other miscellaneous fixes http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/basecamp-mobile/id556137122
  19. Might want to update your maps to City Navigator North America NT 2013.30 and give that a spin.
  20. Never had this issue with an Oregon, I use the GizzMoVest case. The Garmin case for the Oregon looks like it might also do the trick, What type of case do you use for your Oregon? Or are you just throwing it raw into your pack and hoping for the best?
