  1. ...is the proper name for an oriental covered litter. I thought that I'd share that with everyone.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Olar:"...You should post it in the "General" topic forum and sit back and watch the forum hounds submit their own creations..." Oh geez, don't do that ! You'll get posts from folks critiquing/debating everything from spelling, to punctuation, to point of origin, to whether or not 'poetry' is an environmentally friendly cache item (according to a previous forum poll, it all depends on the type of paper you write it on )!
  3. /Edit/: Whoops, after posting this, I took a look at the cache's log and noticed that you've already bagged this one... quote:Originally posted by Decodoppler:"...While you're here though, recommended caches down in your area??? I expect to be down that way later in the week and need a quick and interesting fix... suggestions please..." You might want to try your hand at this one. We're by no means 'high volume' cachers (and the majority of those we do hunt are while we're up at the cottage or elsewhere outside of T.O.), but we did hunt/find this particular cache earlier in the summer. It's located in the north central part of the city (directly south of the 401), is still 'current' (last logged late in October), and - despite the urban setting - involves a suprisingly pleasant wooded venue. The tricky part about this particular cache is determining where exactly to park your car and access the hiking trail. Your best bet is to bring a city map along and to do a 'map recce' before you set out. If the cache is hidden the way it was when we found it, it's quite creative (you can be right on top [beside?] of it without realizing it).
  4. quote:Originally posted by umc:"...These are the ones I got. I have only used one so far but see where two would be so much better. I can't do that and hold my GPSr at the same time though. Nor do I want to look like a bigger dork than I already do..." Nice! Personally, although I purchased my Black Diamond's as a 'pair' as well, I've yet to ever use two at a time (which is fine, because it frees up one each for two of us). As you've already discovered, using a single pole as you would a conventional hiking staff (...and who uses two of those at a time?) is the answer if you want to keep one hand free for managing your GPSr (...or water bottle, or whatever). And of course, by using only one pole, there is the avoidance of the 'Over Equipped Dork' factor you mentioned !
  5. quote:Originally posted by leatherman:"...Hey what's up with the Motorola design?! That would be my very last choice in FRS radios. Ok maybe not the last. Audiovox, need I say more?..." You don't have too ...these folks said plenty . [This message was edited by Cache Canucks on November 18, 2002 at 07:52 PM.]
  6. quote:Originally posted by umc:"...Was going to buy a pair this week but spent my money on too many other things. Trekking poles, weather radio, cache goodies, 18 ammo cans so on and so forth..." I'm a huge fan of trekking poles ever since my son and I started using them this summer. If these are your first, I'm certain that you'll soon be wondering how you went so long without them! Then again, if I misinterpreted your comments and you were, in fact, making reference to a purchase related to some obscure Eastern European knock-off of a popular American science fiction television series, please disregard this post.
  7. ...if you hadn't already noticed it, there is a new addition to the 'GeoCaching.com' list of FAQ with regard to FRS radio usage (scroll down to the bottom of the page). Now all we need is an 'FRS Ch 2' car window decal to show up in the online store .
  8. quote:Originally posted by Decodoppler:"...What I guess I should have asked was: 'I wonder if s/he will post the decision s/he makes as a result of the poll'. I'm still curious about this competition idea..." You've been losing sleep at night too, haven't you...? Wondering if it's safe to turn on the lights and come out of your basement, huh...? Seeing 'totvos' behind every bush, right...? Waiting for the 'other boot to fall' so to speak...? I know... I know... if I don't 'suck it up' myself, I'm going to run out of KraftDinner and Freshie soon . Do you think 'totvos' would find me if I snuck out and ducked into one of those 24-hour grocery stores a 3AM...?

Do you think 'totvos' would spot me if I snuck out and ducked into one of those 24-hour grocery stores at 3AM...? Maybe we could start GeoCaching again, just as long as we did it at night (...without using the backlight on our GPSrs, you can see those freakin' things from 100 yards y'know!). Geez, life was so much simpler before 'totvos' began his incessant campaign to hunt us all down and... and... and... and... I can't even bring myself to type the words... 10. quote:Originally posted by DisQuoi:"...If I walked past someone cheating at solitaire or having a chat with himself using two PCs, I'd laugh and maybe shake my head ...I wouldn't get upset..." "...Cheating? No ... Padding? Yes ... So what?..." Precisely.
  11. quote:Originally posted by Gwho:"...I agree w/Marc that it cheapens the sport to let this go on, and simply looking the other way only encourages it..." Fine ...if that's how you really feel, what are you (or anyone else) going to do about it? As unlikely as it would ever be, the most serious course of action available to GeoCaching.com would be to delete an offender's account. Then what? If a person was dishonest enough to warrant that kind of penalty in the first place, he/she wouldn't think twice to simply re-register using a different name/profile (but I'm repeating myself). With the tens of thousands of cachers worldwide, do you really think that the few confirmed incidents of cheating which have come to light in the forums represent anything more than a mere fraction of those which exist? And I'm not talking the fuzzy grey area incidents where the definition of a legitimate find may be subject to debate, I'm talking about full blown, out and out intentional deception and lying. I'd like to think that I have as much faith in the common decency of my fellow man(or woman) as the next person, but the math alone would suggest that these types of cachers probably number in the 100's at least ...the vast majority of whom you'll never know about. I'm not saying that it's right, I'm just again asking the practical question 'What are you going to do about it?'. quote:Originally posted by Gwho:"...It's one to say "it's only a game, I'll let this rule infraction slide." it's quite another to say "you don't have to follow any rules at all, do what you want..." ...where was that said? [This message was edited by Cache Canucks on November 17, 2002 at 05:14 PM.]
  12. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: quote:Originally posted by Cache Canucks:GeoCaching is just a game (and a free one at that - there's nothing 'at stake' here), not a competition ...those who cheat are only cheating themselves . Yes, it's a great game, but No, those who cheat are not only cheating themselves. At the very least, they are also cheating the owner of the cache and all those who made legitimate claims to the cache. I believe those who cheat are also cheating all responsible geocachers by cheapening their legitimate efforts ... especially when the cheating is overlooked (and therefore deemed acceptable) by a significant part of the geocaching community. Cheating is wrong, and it does matter. [end of today's sermon] I agree, cheating is wrong. However, where we seem to part ways is whether or not, in the grand scheme of things, does something like faking a cache find really amount to a hill a'beans? Were the cache hunts that you and I have done been made any less enjoyable? Is the satisfaction that comes from placing a cache and knowing that folks like you and I legitimately seek them out and find them been made any less rewarding? Was some type of prize or award falsely claimed as a result? Yes, cheating is wrong ...but there will always be those who cheat. For reasons discussed at length in the infamous 'faked photo' thread, when it comes to GeoCaching, there really isn't a whole lot that can be done about it (even if a user's account is deleted, there's nothing stopping h/she from re-registering with a different name/profile). So you're really left with two alternatives ...rant yourself into a knot and type forum posts in protest until your fingers turn numb (keeping in mind that cheaters rarely have a conscience and really don't give a dadgum what you think), or simply acknowledge that - on occasion - this sort of thing is bound to happen, but it needn't detract from the enjoyment that you and other honest cachers derive from the game (...unless of course, you let it).
  13. If this same cacher has been using questionable means to inflate his own 'found' count since the faked photo nonsense hit the fan this past summer, he truly is beyond help . Mind you, note my use of the word 'If' ...personally, I have neither the time nor the impetus to go hunting through cache logs and old forum posts to try and determine for myself whether these latest allegations are warranted. GeoCaching is just a game (and a free one at that - there's nothing 'at stake' here), not a competition ...those who cheat are only cheating themselves .
  14. quote:Originally posted by Firetrkdriver:"...I think putting a laptop in the front of a vehicle would be no more than many things already being done while driving..." "...Bottom line, whatever you're doing, besides concentrating on driving, can be dangerous while behind the wheel. Everyone will have to use good judgement to utilize accessories safely, and if needed, pull over to the side of the road when doing more than glancing..." No doubt, how 'safe' this type of thing is depends as much on how and where it's used as anything else. Personally, with the erratic driving that all of us already encounter on the roads these days with folks using a cellular phone in one hand and a steering wheel (...and sometimes manual gear shift !) with the other, I'd just assume not be driving too closely to any car where the driver is actively using a notebook PC 'enroute' (police cruisers with mobile data terminals included). Having a casual glance now and then while stopped, when traffic is light, or when driving off the beaten path out in the boonies is one thing, but how many of us have been in stop-and-go rush hour city traffic, glanced down briefly to tune the FM radio or change a CD, only to look up a second later to find yourself almost on top of a set of red brake lights that weren't there a couple of seconds ago ...? I dunno 'bout y'all, but my car insurance rates are high enough as it is without having any 'at fault' accidents on my record. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go out and cover my car in bubble wrap...
  15. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish:"...Based on the responses we'll get both the forest and the yellow jackets, though more of the forest will be ordered. They should be available within 3 weeks, give or take..." ...any more word on these hitting the streets soon ?
  16. quote:Originally posted by mrcpu:"...I always sign and if I have them with me, I put my Sig (look left) logo as a sticker in the log..." Had it made up in stickers, eh? Cool.

  18. quote:Originally posted by -=Elwood=-:"...You can see them here..." Also, since the 'buggyballs.com' URL in the photo appears to be 'dead', perhaps (good taste willing) the producer is now out of business .

  23. quote:Originally posted by Anders:"...This is true for the eTrex Vista and the eTrex Summit, but not for the Basic, Camo, Venture and Legend versions..." Whoops ...being a Vista owner, I sometimes need to be reminded that it's not the only member of the eTrex family (I thought that the Vista and Summit were the only eTrex's that had an altimeter). 'If the shoe fits' HEYBULLDOG. [This message was edited by Cache Canucks on November 14, 2002 at 04:16 PM.]
  24. Something new in the store window (in case I'm not the only one who just saw it for the first time).
  25. Also, since the eTrex's altimeter is driven by changes in barometric pressure (and factors other than changes in altitude can cause barometric pressure to change - ie: 'weather'), this can also contribute to altitude fluctuations while stationary.
