  1. Hey Vash, I think you may have left out the bio-suit, geiger counter, and the night vision headgear. ------------------------ STURGEON GENERAL WARNING: Fishing can decrease the risk of long-term employment, a meaningful relationship, and any chance of financial independence... Oh well.

  4. Yes, it will show you lat/long where your cursor is. I don't think it can be set for UTM, but I haven't checked that out yet. I haven't used any other mapping software(so I can't really compare features), but one thing I like about TopoUSA is that you can hook your GPSr into your computer and it will pan your position and trace your route on the map. This is fun when going on a road trip and you have a laptop with an auto adapter. ** Of course, be sure you have a copilot to do the navigating, as we wouldn't want any distracted drivers out there, now would we? hmmm? TopoUSA also exchanges waypoints and routes/tracks with most receivers. It doesn't, however, upload maps to your GPSr yet. Here's a quote from DeLorme's tech support: http://www.delorme.com/support/ "Unfortunately at this time, DeLorme software does not create maps that can be stored on a GPS device. DeLorme does however make XMap® Handheld Street Atlas USA® Edition and Solus® Pro which gives the ability to use maps on a PDA which can then be used with most third-party GPS devices." That's almost all I know. 6. I just bought an inverter so I could run my laptop on the road, and I have Delorme Topo USA Regional (~$40). I plugged my Etrex Legend into it and went on a camping trip recently, and WOW! With my buddy riding copilot/navigator, we found some really cool hikes up in the mountains. It was a blast to drive along and see the arrow move in real-time on the map as we went, and to see what kind of landmarks we were near. It really came in handy when I was trying to find an old camping spot, and the road came to a triple fork whereas I couldn't remember which one to take. I'm happy enough for now with the Delorme software, despite a couple of 'candy' features I'd like to see. It will exchange waypoints, tracks, and routes with most gpsr's, but it won't upload map info yet. I haven't really explored the map features in my Legend, so uploading maps isn't a priority to me at this point. -m Mike "mighkel" Underwood Boise, ID ------------------------ STURGEON GENERAL WARNING: Fishing can decrease the risk of long-term employment, a meaningful relationship, and any chance of financial independence... 7. When you're miles up the trail, the cloud cover is heavy, the trees are dense, it's getting dark, you wanna get back to camp, and you're Garmin won't get a lock to save your life... having a Mag 4000xl is PRICELESS! Sorry, I guess that's not the value you were looking for, but I couldn't resist! 11. Alan !!! Everyone else - I'll carry out truckloads of beer cans/bottles, foil, plastic, paper, etc... But I'll have to draw the line at carrying bags of turds around in my pack. As far as pee goes, if you're REALLY p-c, try this... RECYCLING: Build a vapor-catch. You pee in a plastic container and when the water evaporates, it is caught by a drip system so you can dispose of the salty solids properly (you decide how) and re-drink the water from your own pee! I'm sure you can find plans somewhere out here on the information super-wasteland for 'how to build your own outdoor urine recycling device'. Me... I'll go behind a tree. I'll give it some thought next time I think about peeing on or near a plant. This is not because I'm worried about deer digging it up, but more because I may have to use that plant to WIPE with! Don't get me wrong. When I'm in the mountains (often) and hiking the back-country, it tears me up when I see trash laying around. You almost expect it driving down the freeway, but in the mountains?! It takes a certain type of person to work his/her butt off to get to a remote high-mountain lake by foot. You'd think that if they're up there in the first place, they'd have some sort of appreciation for the pristine beauty of the area and not add the bright and shiney colors of urban refuse to the view. End of rant. Thanks for putting up with me. m Mike "mighkel" Underwood Boise, ID ------------------------ STURGEON GENERAL WARNING: Fishing can decrease the risk of long-term employment, a meaningful relationship, and any chance of financial independence...
