  1. I had the same problem, and was unable to update my paypal account with the new credit card for that annual purchase. I was unable to do so. It seems that when Groundspeak puts it in it is permanent. The only way to do it as far as I know is to delete that purchase and start over at Groundspeak.
  2. This cache, GC8801, is one of mine. It has been found 16 times in the last 6 years. It requires a 700' climb, of which the last 300' there is not trail. When you get to the cache you are standing on top of a large stone arch. It is not as remote as some caches listed, but it is still pretty challenging.
  3. I never have deleted a log or a note, but since this question was raised I checked on one of my caches and was able to delete a note from a poster.
  4. If the difference is the same as between my older 60CS and my new 60CX, then there will be a big difference. In an open area you wont see much, but when under heavy tree cover my 60CS was always losing coverage. The newer chip never loses coverage. The other big difference is how quickly the GPS accesses satellites. It takes 4 or 5 times as long to access satellites using the older units. All that being said. The older unit will work just fine.
  5. My favorite has to do with a first to find. I had put out a cache called Fall Creek's 2nd falls. This is aways into a forest and was not visited right away. When a geocacher finally found and logged it he also left a note stating that he was not first to find. I checked on the cache and found a note in the logbook by a hunter. He had found the cache read the enclosed note identifying it as a geocache. After looking through the cache he found a computer game that his daughter wanted to he got something out of his pack and made the trade. Like a good cacher he traded up. I couldn't have asked for a better first finder.
  6. i am training some employees on new equipment. After the first day i just monitor to see that they are not having any problems. Since it is on the computer I can surf and monitor.
  7. If the cache description had really good hints and if I could get a fairly good feel of where it was using google maps I would go, but I have a hard enough time finding the motel I will be staying at for work much less finding a cache without my GPS.
  8. The deepest snow I have cached in was up to my waist. It took me and hour to go the 100 feet. Unfortunately I did not find the cache. The next fall when we tried again we found the cache was about 50 feet from ground zero. It was this cache that convinced me to buy snow shoes.
  9. If you have the budget I would suggest the Garmin 60CSX. If you also purchase City Navigator you will have a unit that can be used to auto route you to the caching area and then be able to use it out of the car to find the cache. Once you have one you will find a ton more uses for it other than geocaching.
  10. If you have actually lost City Navigator 2008 it would not do you any good to have someone send you theirs. You would still need to buy the unlock code in order to use it, and that is as expensive as buying a new copy of the software.
  11. You might look at the 60CX. It will be a bit cheaper, though maybe not cheap enough. It has most of the gadgets of the 60CSX. The only one you may really miss is the built in electronic compass.
  12. Log onto idahogeocachers.org. You should be able to find some local cachers there that would help you get started including taking you on a caching trip and showing you the ropes.
  13. Did you actually load maps into your GPS or just install the software. If not. you have to select maps segments that you wish to install onto your gps and then send them over. If you have purchased a memory card you can send over quite a few segments. I believe the limit is 2024 segments. I have a 1 gig card and have everything west of the Mississippi river and Topo maps for my home state of Idaho plust part or Wyoming, Utah, and Montana, and I still have some room left. I would suggest becoming a premium member and creating a pocket querie of the area you wish to geocache in. I havd 2 queries that run each week. The maximum number of caches it will run is 500. I have one that contains 500, and a 2nd that contains 450. I do this so there will be room enough left on my GPS to mark my parking places and in case I am doing a multi cache and need to add addtional waypoints. Remember your GPS will only hold 1000 waypoints at a time. I use EasyGPS to download the waypoints to my GPS. Don't forget to clear out all the old waypoints first.
  14. I don't know if they have the navigating kit for the Colorado, but that is the way I went with my 60CX. This gets you City Navigator and the car mounts at a reduced price from buying them seperately.
  15. I bought the 60CX and saved a few bucks over the 60CSX. I had the electronic compass in my 60CS and didn't think I would want it in my new unit. I WAS WRONG. Now you won't ever hear me repeat that last statement again, but it's true. I miss the compass and should have spent the extra $50.
  16. I believe that the Candian version of Topo will autoroute. It sounds like you do not have follow road turned on. Since I auto route with City Navigator I don't know where this option is found. I have my 60CX set up so that when I tell it to recalculate it will ask me whether I want it to follow the road or not. This lets me use autorouting until I get close then I can switch to the straight line distance and direction to the cache.
  17. Since you do not have City Navigator, Make sure the follow road is turned off. This will give you a straight line to the cache, but at least it won't mislead you into going aorund in circles.
  18. Are you doing paperless caching? Yes- I use an old Compaq Ipaq 3955. Are you using pocket queries? Yes-I run 2 queries weekly. One is 500 for my home area, the other is 450 for whatever area I am working in that week. Are you bookmarking the caches for the day? No Are you using any 3rd party software? I am lazy and don't care to do any fancy stuff so I just use EasyGps to download the caches to my GPS. I use GPX view on the Ipaq to view the caches pages and hints. Are you using a Smart Phone/Pocket PC? Pocket PC How are you finding your next set of finds? I press find next on the 60CX. This is not always the best method as it will continue to find the closest cache, but that is as the crow flies and it will take you away from the area you started in.
  19. The very first caches I ever found read 0 when I was at the cache. I thought to myself back then that this was going to be easy. It didn't take long for me to change my mind about that.
  20. Right now with 8 inches of fresh snow on the ground I don't seem to have much issue with those critters.
  21. For most trip I use a fanny pack with 2 water bottle pockets. Seems to work fine for me. If I am really going on a safari I have a 3 liter hydration pack by camelbak. This one is big enough for me to carry everything I need including the kitchen sink.
  22. I did not think I would use the Auto routing feature for geocaching, but once I had it I couldn't understand why I didn't get it sooner. It makes the trip to wherever you are going to park a much shorter adventure. In addition I can use it now for going on vacation. It is much nicer now to be driving along and have someone in the car ask when we are going to stop to eat. I ask what kind of food they want. Check on the GPS for places to eat by type and tell the GPS to take me there. This can be a life saver when you are in a strange town. I guess what I am trying to say, is that you may not realize it now, but the difference in usability between the the Etrex Summit and the Vista is more than worth the additional cost in the long run.
  23. I have done this without being able to project a waypoint. If you keep that waypoint and walk away from it you will get your distance from that spot. One of the screens on my GPS gave me a heading back to the marked waypoint, so if you subtract your new heading from 360 degrees that will give you the heading you should see back. This sound complicated, but I was able to get within 20 feet of the final leg without having a unit that would project a waypoint.
  24. Starbrand is right. No additional mapping software is required for caching, but it can make your day a lot easier. Depending on the unit you have you may be able to purchase software that will allow you to auto-route. This will save you a lot of trouble. I also have topo software on my GPS. It is nice to know which side of the creek the cache is on before you actually get there on the wrong side. None of this is essential, but sure can make your day go a lot better.
  25. I am lazy, and use EasyGps. I have 2 pocket queries created each week. one is for 500 caches in my home town area, and the other is for 450 caches wherever I will be working next. As long as all you want to do is load the caches onto your GPS without any special editing EasyGps will work just fine. The reason I only have 450 in my 2nd Querie is so that there will be room left for marking my parking locations, or it it is a multi and I need to add additional waypoints. I have a pocket PC for the hints etc.
