  1. With GSAK you can open the Zip-file as well. So no need to unzip it before. GermanSailor
  2. A log is never a waste of space! Usually always something worth mentioning happens. What was the weather like, die you like the container, did you find it easily or after an exdended search? It's maybe those little things which might seem to trivial to you to mention. Still it's nice to read a little story. , I don't like copy & paste logs, you get them quite often if guy are on a "Power-Cache-Tour"... Very short logs are considered a form a criticism, so if you didn't like a geocache, but don't want to offend the owner a "+1" or only a "TFTC" might be something to write. The system does not allow to log without any text, if you try to do so, you get the error screen with the red text and asterisk. Technically you can only enter a full stop "." in the text field. But what's the point of that point? GermanSailor
  3. The mentionend regulations are not unique to Gemany. Australian Regulation And the German regulation: §57 StVZO It basically states that a speedomer should overread no more than 10% + 4 km/h (2,5 m/hr) Hope that helps. Commercial vehicles have to get their speedometers and odometers checked regularly. GermanSailor
  4. You need nothing except batteries. The mentioned cable make live much more convenient, however you maybe need an USB-Serial Converter als well. To start geocaching the Etrex H is just fine! GermanSailor
  5. As far as I know it's not possible directly via Geocaching.com. However you can report this person to Groundspeak, if he or she is abusing the system, Groundspeak will probably take measures. (Ban this person for a period of time or forever. It happened.) Every time you get an Email via Geocaching.com the subject is like this: So, just set up your Spam-Filter that it deletes all messages which include "[GEO] USERNAME contacting". That will work. If the person does this post note - delete note method. Just set up your spam Filter for "USERNAME posted a note". GermanSailor
  6. You can send the gpx file to the GPSr with. EasyGPS or event use the zip-file with GSAK EasyGPS ist Freeware, GSAK is free, but you get a "nag screen" after a while, but still can use it. I recommend you to start using GSAK since it has endless opportunities and features. GermanSailor
  7. You can alter the "Date Placed" field anytime. I usually set it to the date the geocache was published. Sometimes there is a delay of a couple of days since the reviewers are sometimes quite busy. GermanSailor
  8. You are right, the 60 series from Garmin doesn't support paperless geocaching. You need one of the Oregon or Colorado models. Or you get an additional PDA to do all the "paperwork" there. With the GPS 60 maybe the POI workaround could help. There the description of a geocache is put into several POI, so you have the information, but that's not very convenient. GermanSailor
  9. The GPS is more accurate. The speedometer gets its information from the gearbox, but isn't usually compensated for slight differences in the circumference of the (driven) wheels. On the other hand, car speedometers have to overread in order to prevent you from speeding. At least this is the law in Germany. GermanSailor
  10. Acceptable? I don't think it's fair to "waste" so much space. I usually use a stamp as well, it just looks neater. Said stamp was a present by a close friend. But this stamp fits into a single line of the standard micro logbook, so, no space is wasted. GermanSailor
  11. Don't return the unit. I'm sure it's fine. Maybe you just need to download the Garmin Communicator Plugin and then you can easily transfer the waypoints (Geocaches) from the Geocaching.com site to your GPSr. Additonally you can use software like EasyGPS to send and receive waypoints, geocaches, tracks and routes. Try this little program - It's worth it! GermanSailor
  12. With the new GPSMap 60CSx modell it's indeed as jkettu said. If you have the GPS 60, then I assume the procedure is the same as with the new GPSMap 60 CSx, but better check with the manual, which you can find here. GermanSailor
  13. I hope this links will help: http://www.cryptex.org/h_home.htm There is even a manual for building a cryptex, however it's only in German. Maybe the pictures are at least helpful. GermanSailor
  14. Try to use the "Send to GPS" feature so, typos and the mentioned false format (DMS instead of DM.mmm) won't be an issue. Also it's worth cross-checking the coordinates shown by your GPSr with Google Earth oder Google Maps. I don't really believe that a GPSr is off by miles. More likely there was a wrong digit entered in the Unit. GermanSailor
  15. Best caches are the ones you awak from a long hibernation. Actually that is the only stat I'm probabyl interessted in. Have to check which cache here in Jax is the one with the longest period of time without a somebody finding it... GermanSailor
  16. Hi, I'm surprised that we have people here who don't hesitate to be online, but have issues with a USB-drive? It's much easier to check a physical drive than to safeguard your computer against everything from the internet. I would definitely put a pic or text log on such a TB. But taking a notebook out just for one cache would be to much of a hassle. GermanSailor
  17. There are so many caches who wait for weeks until the first cacher finds them. Of course those are usually not the easy ones. I don't really understand your point. You can go caching without any restrictions without paying. But if you want extra service, you have to pay for it. I don't know a lot of businessis who let you use their services for free and just charge you for extras. And yes, some hobbies are more expensive than others, but you rarely find a hobby which is just $30 per year in fixed costs. The argument that many people can't affort the $30 per year is just plain ridiculous. You spent more on batteries for the GPSr every year than that. (For some reason the concept of rechargeable batteries hasn't made it to the geocaching communtiy yet.) I assume that you don't walk to all your caches so I assume that you are willing to spend a lot of money on fuel as well. I suggest to pay for a one month membership, get all the pocket queries for your local area and you are done. GermanSailor
  18. You are so right. I find it quite amusing that someone does a 200 mile roundtrip for just one cache. And then complains about the five bucks supporting a state park. I additionally find it actually quite fair to you taxpayers that there is a (very small in my opinion) fee for most parks, since if the money came only from taxes, no tourist would pay. All the state or national parks are so cheap compared to what you have to pay at an actual commerical park like Disney or SeaWorld. I wish we had parks with those facilities in Germany. GermanSailor
  19. I like the idea of people working together to achieve something. That's the type of cacher I want to meet while out geocaching. They did the cache together, so everybody should be allowed to log it! GermanSailor
  20. I don't think so either. And it definitely is not a "competitive" sport. So I don't understand why people get excited at all about the numbers of other people. Probably they are just bored. GermanSailor
  21. Are you aware that thousends of people were killed and you find that quote a good comparison to LPCs? GermanSailor
  22. I don't lighten up if someone plays down the what happened those times. You probably never spoke to someone in person, who survived "it". I just because the quote is often attributed to the wrong person doesn't make it right. How difficult is it check something before quoting? I just can't stand people who abuse the names of such great people to have a polemic argument in a stupid internet discussion. I especially get excited if they obviously don't have the faintest idea what they are talking about. Education is not a bad thing, and it is so easy to read up about everything on the internet. GermanSailor
  23. Wow, I always thought the US is a big country. But apparently not, if you already run out of cache locations. GermanSailor
  24. Well if they come after people who don't know what they are talking about then you should run: I guess you ment Martin Niemöller. Both were lutheran pastors and in the resistance movement. One could argue if it is good manners so compare the sacrifices those men made, just to have a very out of context "argument" for defending something so banal as LPC. I think the topic those two men were dealing with was / is much more serious than what we are talking about. I hope you uderstand what I mean and think a bit more before writing stuff like this, at least do your homework first and know whom you are quoting. GermanSailor
  25. Exactly, not every cache is the same and I guess that a cache in a remote location requires less work than a urban one. Who says I can't have a fellow cacher / friend / trained muggle who helps me with my caches or just checks them every now and then or just when necessary. In an ideal world caches would be self sufficent. On persons writes in his log: "cache needs a new logbooks, pencil, I didn't have one." the next finder brings a logbook or pencil along. I think 200 caches is a bit much, but I'm certain there are real committed people out there who can juggle that many easily. GermanSailor
