  1. Did you look on Ebay? I have seen them available for as low as $10, here is link to one for 15 with free shipping. Look around and I bet you can find one for under $10 I did one quick search and found this on the first page, took me about 30 seconds total. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Garmin-Venture-PC-Interface-Cable-PN-010-10206-00-/350467876426?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item519983664a
  2. I'm not sure. My "geek guru" friend has tried numerous times a few years ago. I no longer talk to him to know exactly what the problem was but I do own a netbook, if that helps. Well it can be done and without knowing what your friend tried then we can't help you much. I suggest you try again, there is several tutorials on here that can help or you may want to seek out a local cacher who can help. If you have some extra money to spend and want a much better GPS then Cabela has the Garmin Oregon 450 for $249 on Black Friday (available online as well)
  3. Why can't you upload the coordinates? I used to have that model and I uploaded to it all the time, if your computer doesn't have a serial port or you don't have a cord, then you can buy a USB cord for around $10 on Ebay.
  4. WoW!!! Was I being rude? If you think that was rude then you are in for a surprise in this world. I gave honest advice which was to look for more caches before you place one yourself, this would give you the "experience" to know what you like to find and what you need to hide. You was the one who stated "I have found quite a few caches and am ready to place a cache of my own" all I did was point out 6 is not alot and you "are not ready" to place a cache yet until you have a better idea of what a good hide would be. You find enough and you will know what you like and what you need to do to make your hide a "great hide"
  5. You have found "6", that is not "quite a few" that is a couple hours worth. If you have no idea of what a good find is then you need to find more and more until you "know" what a good find really is. Ask your self the question, "what do you like to find when you look for a cache?" when you can answer that question then you have the right idea of what kind of cache to hide yourself.
  6. The easiest way is to meet with a local geocacher and get some pointers from them, this is the fast track to getting started. Look for meet and greet near you and go to them, I have yet to meet a geocacher who doesn't like to help a newbie out. Post your general location and maybe someone can offer you some hands on help.
  7. This is why I tell people to buy the correct model first, don't buy a cheaper model and then try to sell it and upgrade later unless you don't mind taking a little loss. That model is available for $199 brand new in box right now at http://www.megagps.com/garmindakota10.aspx Also they have the refurbished ones for $169 which is better then a used one because it has full factory warranty.
  8. These can be found for around $240 or so brand new so anyone who does a little searching will find one for that price. Use that as a guide for you to set a price to sell it. Remember the warranty starts when it is first sold. Your's is a used one even if it has never been out of box.
  9. Yep what a deal they are on sale at Cabelas right now brand new for $75, I will pick up a few and sell them for $80 each or 4 for $350 too. http://www.cabelas.com/product/Garmin174-etrex-H-GPS-Unit/741410.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch%2F%3FN%3D%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dgarmin%2Betrex%26Ntx%3Dmode%252Bmatchallpartial%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts%26WTz_st%3D%26WTz_stype%3DSP%26form_state%3DsearchForm%26recordsPerPage%3D80%26search%3Dgarmin%2Betrex%26searchTypeByFilter%3DAllProducts%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_srn%3DSeeAllItems&Ntt=garmin+etrex&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products
  10. I didn't know Garmin ever had a trade in program??? I know some other manufacturers have offered trade ins but I have never seen an offer from Garmin.
  11. I looked on Ebay under the completed auctions and they had them sold for $100 to $110, they had several with "buy it now" for more and none of them were sold.
  12. The biggest question you need to answer before someone can make an honest recommendation is how much money are you willing to spend? You can get many of the older (yet still working fine for geocaching) for $40 or so and up. If you have some extra money and want more bells and whistles then you can look for sales for some of the models just being replaced by a newer model. Cabelas has a Vista HCX bundle, regular price $349 going on sale this week for $199 ( http://www.cabelas.com/product/Garmin174-etrex-Vista-HCX-GPS-Bundle/708153.uts ) They also have the Etrex H model on sale for $75
  13. If you don't want the generic cables (which worked fine for me and much cheaper) then buy the Garmin brand cables. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=8705
  14. New seller with "0" feedback I would say this is an auction to avoid. JMHO
  15. If no one has one on here, then look on Ebay or even Amazon.com, I bought one a few years ago for mine for less then $10
  16. try this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-SINGLE-Data-CABLE-GARMIN-eTrex-eMap-GPS-NEW-/310262431697?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483d14ffd1
  17. I am interested in one of them if one is still available.
  18. Are you by any chance going to the Mega Bash at ASP ( http://coord.info/GC2AN4T ) If so I am interested in this GPS and we can set up a meet somewhere.
  19. Keep checking the sale prices at Cabelas, they have sold the 450 a couple times for $249.99 this year
  20. Do a search on ebay, you can find one for between $5 and $10 if nobody has extra one on here.
  21. Check out here: http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/state/wy These maps are free to download and use.
  22. Cabela's Had the 450 on sale a few weeks ago for $249.99 which is lower then most people want for a used one. keep an eye on them to have another sale before summer. this was the 450, not the 450T
  23. This unit will work great for geocaching, to load caches you either need a serial port on your computer or you can buy a USB to fit the older garmins for around 10 to 15 dollars
  24. Not all schools are alike no there is no single answer, you would need to ask permission from the dean or president of the school you would like to hide a cache at. Just being public property does not give you the right to place a cache there. I do not believe Goecaching.com approvers will approve one with out a statement saying permission has been given for cache to be placed there. Why not step up and get the permission and hide a few caches.
