  1. I thought most of the Ram mounts were made with Aluminum which would be lighter and wouldn't rust.
  2. quote:Originally posted by otterbuff:I am considering the purchase of a RAM Mount for my Etrex Legend for use on my bicycle (mountain bike). Sounds like it has more shock absorbancy than the Garmin mount (at twice the cost). On one of the suppliers web sites it states that model RAM-B-149Z-GA5U “This mount is perfect for rail mounting out of the elements.” Does that mean this unit should not get wet or dirty? I have determined that it is Zinc. So what is the deal with zinc? Willing to listen to any other recomendations as well. THANKS! Zinc uses range from metal products to rubber and medicines. About three-fourths of zinc used is consumed as metal, mainly as a coating to protect iron and steel from corrosion (galvanized metal), as alloying metal to make bronze and brass, as zinc-based die casting alloy, and as rolled zinc.
  3. quote:Originally posted by jtice:Traveling Jones ........ Do you, or can you, have the topo and metroguide on there at the same time? Can one be turned off at a time, .. example: can you have the topo on the lowest detail, or completely off,,, while having the netroguide on Most detail? ( and visa versa) ??? The answer to that is no, when you add a new map it replaces the one already on the Legend. So if you have Topo on it and want to put a map from Metroguide then it will replace the Topo and visa-versa

My eldest is only 8, so yours might be older than mine, but once they find one they are all set for the day and want to get back to show their treasures to mom. I've tried pushing them to do more, but its a case of diminishing returns. I guess what I'm trying to say is don't overdo it. Keep tabs on their mood and call it quits when they've had enough. If you get too ambious, they might start to resent being drug along to "just one more cache". If you keep it fun, they'll want to do it again and again, just not all in one day. Very good advice for everyone to follow. :&gt

WHAT SCREEN DO I USE? CAN ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THERE LUCK WITH THEIR LEGEND. AND IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER TIPS OUT THERE PLEASE PASS THEM ALONG. THANKS All CAPS means shouting, why are you shouting at us? please do not use all CAPS unless you want to be ignored.

We were presented with a written statement from the Wildlife Division of the Michigan DNR, on DNR letterhead, signed by DNR officers, MANDATING - not /suggesting/, that caches be removed immediately from Game and Wildlife areas. I think he was reffering to the MDNR is the one who jumped the gun, not you or any other cacher. But if the USF&W hasn't completed their own policy yet and already the Michigan DNR are saying "NO" to any caches on that land.

I only deal with people who will accept CC or Paypal and use CC to pay for it.
  8. quote:Originally posted by 73.7West:GeoFool... Found it Amazon for $199 Am I missing something? 73.7West It is called a price increase, when the above message was posted the Legend was selling for $189 and came with a $50 rebate. It is now $199 and still has the $50 rebate. So it was a $10 price increase.
  9. It's back !!!! Before they changed the server for the forum there was left click option to see other's profile, then after the switch it was gone. Looks like it is back again, it sure is easier this way to contact another user.
  10. That's not a problem, that is a feature. Now you can show all your friends that your Honda Civic can run very fast after all.
  11. quote:Originally posted by Tradboy:Is there an easy way to look up a username? For example, my name is Tradboy....I can't seem to find a link or page on geocaching.com that allows you to search for a user, to view their page. The only way I can do it is to search for caches found by that user, go to one of the caches, find their log, then go to their page. [This message was edited by Tradboy on May 12, 2003 at 10:06 AM.] You got it figured out, that is the only way to find it right now.
  12. According to your profile you have only found 7 caches so far, so if you make a team name then go back to those 7 caches and log them again under the team name also (not actually go and find them again, just relog them and change the date to the same as the first time you logged them), make a note explaing what you are doing and I am sure it will not be any problem. Then from now on log as the team and under your own name also, this way if you find one on your own then the count will stay accurate. If you do not think you will ever cache without this other person then forget the personal log and just log the team name.
  13. A clever turn on a recurring problem that we see in our Citizen Patrol area. We have a pool that turns into a MIP zone at night. When we see the kids drinking beer at the pool, we call the police, and the kids scatter because they have scanners and can get the call going out the cruiser in time to blow before the police get there. It would be interesting to report events using GPS coordinates and see if we can beat them to the punch. Actually you can use the scanner to help you break the party up early, since the kids are listening to it all you need is the call going out to send a unit to that location, and since the kids are listening then the party breaks up and you don't really need to send the unit. Work this a few times until they wise up and then really have a unit respond (BUSTED)
  14. You can get a legend for $199 and get a $50 rebate along with free shipping bringing the total cost to $149. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000058BCQ/qid=1052269470/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-5590708-4248150?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846 Last week this was $189 plus $50 rebate.
  15. quote:Originally posted by DeerChaser & Poni: No need to piss people off or to be a jerk. Whats the point if no one can find it? It is easy to hide a cache where nobody can find it but what is the point? I want my caches to be found, not but noncachers but by people actually looking for it. None of my caches have been found by a non cacher yet and only a few cachers has had very much trouble with any of them. I do hide them in fairly obvious spots (to a geocacher anyway) and I make sure the coordinates are very close. But if anyone asks for a hint after trying it I will freely give them hints. I want the caches to be found, thet is why I hid them.
  16. All of the above plus you can also add a place that is simply a good hiding spot, with low traffic in the area and has public access. On some caches I hide at least 1/4 mile from parking area, others I have only a few hundred feet. Most people find the close ones and will pass on the ones that requires a hike. Just watch while you are caching and hide them the way you like to find them.
  17. quote:Originally posted by wanda texas:I LOVE THE EXTRA HINTS!!!!!....i dont have a gps yet...i dont even have a computer ..... ] You should pick up a good used GPS, if you look around you can find good beginners GPS's for $50 to $75. You may spend that much just on the many return trips to try again.
  18. Personally if someone asks for a hint after a no-find then I will give it to them. Maybe not the exact leaf it is hidden under but enough to help them locate it once in the area. Now I will not give a hint until they have attempted to find it and they ask for a hint. I have been stumped on some easy ones and walked right up to some really difficult ones.
  19. quote:Originally posted by Bluestarz:Wal-Mart here doesn't carry the yellow one anymore just the camo. I wondered if there was a difference between them besides the color. Also the camo runs about $20 higher. But if Wally World would let you have it for the regular price of the yellow Etrex then go for it.
  20. Is it still under warranty? if not I think the price to refurbish it runs $59 for the yellow Etrex http://www.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html Might be better off selling it as non-working and use the money to buy a better model (including the $60 to repair it) You can pick these up used for around $75 in good condition But it is your call.
  21. I may be interested but first I would like to know what is the price you are looking to get out of this. Please post the bottom dollar figure you are willing to take.
  22. quote:Originally posted by jaxxom:Well, thanks for the info from both of you. I tried both suggestions, but when I tried to load an earlier version the unit just kept turning off and when I did the other, it just mostly gave the ability to fine tune the screen resolution. I will perservere though and try to find more info, since I really do not want to have to send this in for fixin... If you followed the directions correctly then it should have reset the GPS back to default settings. Did you get the screen at first that shows: Bravo Version Software Version Time Internal temperature of unit Battery voltage External voltage Button presses If so then by pressing the "up"+"enter"+"on/off" keys at the same time should have reset it.
  23. That is out of my area (way out) but something you may be able to do to help this get moving. Try moving it to a cache near the interstate or to an airport, these are the areas that most traveling cachers will seek out first.
  24. To over write the file make sure you name it the same as the first file. Another way would be to get a 6-in-1 card reader ($10 to $15) and then you can use Windows Explorer to search the card and delete what files you no longer want on it. Usally faster to load files to card with a reader also.
  25. NO RUN, Run while you still have a chance!!! Oh too late, you are already "infected" Welcome and have fun. :&gt
