  1. I just planted a cache out the Juan de Fuca Trail, and went by the rating system on the Hide/Seek page. It is a 2 mile walk, and some up and down, but not nearly as much as, say, Mt Work. The system gave it a 2.5, 4, which I changed to a 2, 3.5. After all, most of it is along a rock shelf ( a little scrambly, but not tough) I think maybe we DO underrate caches here, based upon my objectivity when preparing the cache page, I think maybe we are more accustomed to the longer hikes.

  2. I got numerous comments about how we rate caches here on the Southern Island, saying that we underestimate difficulty or terrain. A 3/3 is actually a 3.5/4, for example? Any of you care to comment, so that I, for one can be more accurate on my ratings?

  5. And so ends the most fun I think I have ever had with my clothes on. ( Doesn't say much, I know)

To all of you that we got to know well, Thanks.

To those that we didn't get as much time with, it was our great loss, and we thank you even more.

It is done, the machine is ended. Go In Peace.

Thanks everybody for a great weekend.

    And now we rest.

  7. I always had better luck on I-705 when coming to Port Angeles from Kent. Takes about 2 hrs 10, as I recall. Bear in mind that that was with my ex screamimg at me to slow down below 40, as anything faster is TOO dangerous. ( Yes, she's from Victoria. Does it show?)

Has anyone ever placed words on these pages to denote what a fantastic person cachewidow is?

You heard it here first, folks!

  9. In our rush to be politically correct, some of us have overdone the "protect the environment" thing. I too, have seen plenty of deer trails out there, and a bear flattening the grass. ( I felt it prudent not to tell him he that should NOT damamge the grass ) Should we give those nasty deer a time-out?

We are part of the environment, and have been for at least 3 million years, according to the Leakeys. Yes, we should take care not to do unnecessary damage, but bear in mind that that the ecosystem includes, not excludes, US.

We went through the pros and cons on that one GroundClutter, and it was just too unpredictable, as to where everyone would be at lunch time. It would also have taken some considerable time to do the cooking on site, as well as permission to do it, wherever that might happen to be. I see fewer problems with sandwiches and fixings, and could use help if you can spare it Saturday morning. After all, you will still be here, as will the caches, after our visitors are gone. We will be preparing lunch Saturday morning, to ensure freshness.

While eroyd would know this far better than I would, there are a number of options fairly close to town, namely Langford Lake, Prospect lake, Matheson Lake, and many others. I would check with the expert first, though. See above.

  12. Very cool trailer for your cache series! I have used DivX before, but only to view a flick or two on CD. Dasein, Macs are like appendixes. A Mac can only do you harm in the long run, and you will be much better off after it is removed.

It is, of course, a plot, to force you onto the BC Ferries, and make you order the infamous "Sunshine Breakfast", now banned throughout the civilized world. They really wanted to get rid of those eggs that showed up at Swartz bay, when the ferry system first started operating in 1960.

  14. Let's see. The sum of the square of the opposite sides equals the hypotenuse of the square of the distance between Mt Hood, and Pioneer Square. Of course, since Pi are not Square, but Pi are round, this brings us to the Yakima Cache Machine, used as a baseline for comparative puroposes only. This takes into account lack of Selective Availability, Ionospheric Interference, and The fact that TravisL does NOT use a Garmin. Ok, I have it. His driveway is in Hawaiii.

  15. Come to think of it, posting the distances in this thread might be more fun, as well as more public.

I will be attending. My distance is 1.8 miles. Hey, go ahead and laugh, but so far I'm second to PdxMarathonMan. If he doesn't want it, it's all mine so far. icon_biggrin.gif

  16. I think the important thing to remember here is that the VCM is about finding a lot of caches, but more importantly, about meeting other cachers and getting the benefit of that experience. Some people are loners, and some are much more gregarious, so that a Cache Machine suits them much more readily.

The above was a very wishy washy lead in to asking a favour of all who will be attending.

    In my possesion is

    Tonto's Fox

Tonto is meant to travel to event caches, and then go to the person who travelled the furthest to get there. Could those attending enter the VCM coords in their GPSr, then measure distance from their home to the VCM? The Travel Bug would then go to the furthest cacher(s) from home, unless they would rather it go to the next person.

Please email me from my profile above with distances. We have seen Tonto at other events near here, and are eager to see him off to another country, or province.

  17. The media's need to "sensationalize" a news story is a direct result of overzealous, reporters, editors, and even Media Moguls, who make everything a "crisis". Witness SARS, for example. One of my M.D. clients this week pointed out that 33 people have died of SARS in Canada (which is likely a mutated strain of influenza) while each spring and early summer, some 3000 on average, die of regular influenza. The media ignores this fact, in order to sell newspapers, and have people watch at 6 PM. I have noted that the media not only do not CARE to get the facts, if they are forced into the truth, will embellish, change, twist, or otherwise distort, any factual occurence.

3 Men did the logical thing, and assured their own well being. If that is sensational, then so be it. I call it being smart. Cheers, guys.

Another example: If 34 percent of accidents are caused by drunk drivers, then 66 percent are caused by sober people. Maybe we should get the sober people off the road instead. icon_razz.gif

This has been my editorial of the week, sensationalized for the geocaching community only. This Public Service Message was brought to you by our sponsor..or maybe just Team 3.

  19. Do I detect a definite Japanese bias in most of these posts? Except for the Ford Escort, the Jeeps, and the Chevy Subdivision, there seems to be a conspiracy here. icon_wink.gif Best cachecruisers I ever saw were a Pontiac Grand Am, (High ground clearance, 25 mpg) and an absolulely incredible 1980 Ford Bronco, owned by my friend BCRockcrawler. It gets about 8 mpg, though. Drive Local, Cache Global.
