  1. I have seen the light. As I have stated publicly, I used to cache for other reasons, many altruistic. I am reborn. It's the money. It had better be a great cache for me to go there if there is NO money in it. I have read, listened, and learned.

Dagg: Right ON! I'm with you all the way. BUT! get to Prevost early in the spring; it gets archived in April.

About Guns at Macaulay: Once again, I point out that it is NOT a new cache. Everyone has been there, and the site is NOT as good as the KFWB site. IF YOU WANT TO PUT A CACHE THERE YOURSELF, GO AHEAD! Everyone knows where it is. C'mon folks, Anyone can place a cache here. Why do I have to maintain it?

Canadazuuk, re: Sumas Mtn: Throw a hundred bucks in it. I'll take the day off and go tomorrow, ferries and all. AND I'll sell ya the camera. Cheap.

I still have a soft spot for nice places, and if there is a geocache near one of those places I may, or may not, try for it. I will stick to Team K caches when I can, however, whether there is money in them or not. They are top of my list.

Yellowcode, as you say, to each their own. I will continue to enjoy this sport for my own reasons, whether or not other cachers agree with those reasons.

When I started this thread, I was curious if other cachers had ideas about caching for cash. I did have reservations about it, and now I do not. Some of you have convinced me. I will go for the money each and every time. If there is another bonus, like a nice site, or a great view, great. (But I won't post any more pictures. That's not what it's about for me.) I have thrown off my socialistic tendencies, and joined the 21st century.

If I'm not counting, it was a bad day.

  2. Geochamp:

It is obvious to me that you are simply not paying attention. If you were truly reading this thread, as you claim to be, you would know that:

    1) Not one person answered me directly when I asked if caching should be about money, or the site. Not one.

    2) Not one person would admit going to a cache because there was money in it.

    3) Not one person, except myself, has admitted to caching for cash in the future.

    4) Not one person came out in favour of the site, and the hide, saying caching should not be about the money. Not one.

    5) This thread was started because I was curious to see how people felt about this subject. I was quickly made aware that the overriding factor IS the money, not the chase, or the site. (No one contradicted me on this one fact.) I have changed my thinking accordingly, and realized that my previous way of thinking had no place in this new game. I am now out for the money, period. Did you get that? No whining, YOU WIN! I want the money, even worse than you do.

I note that you have ZERO hides, and have thus far contributed nothing to the sport. I do not mean this to be critical in any way, but I do not believe you have ANY right to tell me what I can, or can’t, do with my hides. It is my judgment that my cache is older, and all the locals who are going to go there already have, and the newer one is a better draw. THAT is my opinion, and I am entitled to it.

    6) I have never, nor shall I, demean any person or persons in this thread. There has been no attack on a person or persons, from this chair. Others have demeaned me, but I have suffered worse. As has been amply pointed out to me, “If you don’t like what is said in the thread, then DON”T read it.” (You don’t anyway. No difference.) I expect, and demand, the same treatment, however. You just attacked ME without reading my posts, because you felt like it.

    7) I am impressed that you offered your help at no cost to other cachers at “Watcher”. Very commendable. Did you notice, however, that your motivation was financial in that statement?

    8) I have proposed that we have a new game, based upon Team K caches. You obviously did not read that either.

    9) I have spent more money going to, finding, and enjoying caches than you could possibly know. I am not alone. All cachers spend money caching, not just you and Team K.

    Canadazuuk:

I agree… Team K caches should NOT be archived. They are now the backbone of the sport, here on the Island especially. Mine, however, will be archived, to make room for Team K caches. I believe that caches should not be mere metres apart, as mine was to “Buzzle’s Puzzle”. This is not sour grapes. My cache has simply outlived it's usefulness.

I also note that when other cachers archive a cache, it’s no big deal. Why are my caches so special? If you feel the need to place a cache 60 metres from “Buzzle’s Puzzle”, why not plant one yourself? I can’t see anyone objecting. I probably wouldn’t go myself unless there was some sizable coin in it, but I might if the view was good.

It is my opinion that caches get old, especially these urban ones. There will be many more along to replace them. Never fear, the sky has not fallen.

Curious George: You may stop reading any time you like. A free country, remember? I, however, am enjoying a spirited debate with some intelligent people.

    If I ain't countin cash', I wasn't cachin'.

  3. Yellowcode3, if I sound negative in any way, then you have taken my post the wrong way. I am deadly serious. This is an opportunity to restructure the game, and make things easier for most cachers. KFWB is now doing Difficulty 1 to Difficulty 5, so there is something for EVERYONE! We should embrace this, archive all the ones that are by now so boring. (remember, you archived some of yours partly for that reason.)

I have the ability to see the silver lining in any cloud, as I hope you know. So let's get with the program, and go big! Then we can go home.

If I ain't sweatin', I ain't cachin. Are we there yet?

  4. Yellowcode3.. it impacts me thus:

I (and other cachers) have had caches placed extremely close to our existing site(s). As I recall, there was another cacher who used to do this, and he was ridiculed for it, but that is another topic.

I make an assumption here: I believe that the majority of us think that KFWB caches are the way to go. As such, the game should now be structured like an American Game show, such as Survivor, or The Amazing Race:

KFWB sets the rules, and places the caches where they see fit, regardless of whether there is an existing cache there. (Jeremy and Admin will have no say in this.)They will be final arbiter and referee in all competitions. In addition, all other caches will be archived forthwith, in accordance with these guidelines.

This makes competitions fair. All caches placed by the same Team. A level playing field.

It also frees cachers considerably; As I am now charged with maintaining my seven caches, as well as Plantman's twenty, this makes my life much easier. I no longer have to spend that time doing maintenance. (There will soon be a KFWB cache near these anyway, I would assume.)

I can never compete with the value of goods placed in KFWB caches. Mine are just silly and irrelevant beside theirs. As we have established, the location is FAR less important than the contents of the cache, therefore, an old style cache will not be missed in any way.

Guns at Macacaulay will be archived on Sunday January 12th, at 23:00 GMT, in favour of the far superior KFWB cache. I walk it, not just talk it.

  5. Oh but that it were true, money NOT be found in caches. Here on Vancouver Island, the whole game is now about 4x4's and FRS radios, Logging roads in blizzards, cutting each other's throats, and getting that $1000. ( Which is about 6 bucks US)

I am an old time purist, who goes for the place and the view, and yes, hopefully, the first find. I asked in another Forum thread if the Game is now all about the money, and was met with a resounding YES!!

Team KFWB GPS, and old time geocaching

I wish I lived elsewhere, so that I could continue without this insane frothing at the mouth going on here. You other folks should count yourselves lucky.

If I ain't sweatin', I ain't cachin. Are we there yet?

  6. I have a friend moving from Canada to Noosa next week. He enquired about buying a Garmin Legend in Australia, and discovered it to be about 40 percent more expensive. He bought it mail order here in Canada, and is bringing it with him on Tuesday the 7th. Maybe you folks need to have Geocaching Canadians buy them for you, and ship them to you. Ideas?

If I ain't sweatin', I ain't cachin. Are we there yet?

  7. I now note that there are at least 30 more KFWB caches to be placed in the near future. Now that we've established that the game IS about the money, I propose that the next topic be: Should I archive my caches, as KFWB seems to want to be the only game in town? I think mine have outlived their usefulness. Ideas?

If I ain't sweatin', I ain't cachin. Are we there yet?

  8. quote:
if you want something with mapping capabilities at entry level I'd say the etrex Legend is the best.

I agree with RobertM. I have used, and or, owned the Yellow eTrex, and a Venture. The Legend is by far the best deal out there. MapSource software really makes the Legend though, and, you get Metroguide (Points of Interest)stuff for Ottawa. We here in Victoria should be so lucky.

  9. I have two of those downstairs. I never realized that the ready made handle was so well crafted. I think I need to be taller, or trim the length. The guy who made it was a LOT taller then me.

If I ain't sweatin', I ain't cachin. Are we there yet?

  10. Having now played with all three features for a few days, I find that the Enhanced Basemap alone is worth the price of admission. The extra roadways help immensely, especially when used in conjunction with proper topo maps.

About those Topo maps: In Canada, we (our governments) charge MUCH more for this information than does the United States. They feel that information should be readily avavliable to all, while here, we must be forced to pay top dollar for the information that we already paid for with our taxes. This forces Garmin to pay unreasonably high prices for these maps, and the end consumer would have to pay the final price for this.

The answer would be, possibly, a different product for the Canadian market, open sourced. I presume the trick for MapSpsource would be to make it so that a US consumer could not just load US data into a Canadian product, thus rendering the US MapSource CD's redundant. Maybe Garmin has some ideas on this?

  11. Hmm... I have now had the time to do a few (well, four easy) KFWB caches. I have seen some nice spots, that I did not know were there. I did do a tougher one, just to show that I'm not completely pigheaded. Ok, KFWB, we're waiting to hear from you in here!

    Happy New Year all...

If I ain't sweatin', I ain't cachin. Are we there yet?

  12. Mery Xmas to all, and a very happy New Year! My Venture would have been 7 months old, but the new Legend is more better faster cooler, and it's only 2 weeks old. (Early Xmas present) No, cacherunner, you can't borrow it. icon_wink.gif

  13. Hey Medic P1, You are correct. This is a congenital defect, caused by textile manufacturers near where I grew up. The fallout caused a button-like growth on my left wrist. What I should have said was...:

    quote:
I keep my.. AHEM..eTrex Legend on a lanyard around my neck for easy decapitation. I also have the official handy dandy Garmin almost see through carrying case, with belt clasp, and I attach that to my vest at the shoulder, so I don't lose coverage as much in the bush. This is crucial when first becoming lost, as it is much easier to become more lost if you can follow your own track, and see where you haven't been lost yet. It also makes it easier to resist the temptation to check the GoTo distance...every 5 meters.

Just so ya know, I am forever lost and very proud of such. I have been extensively trained by the Province of British Columbia in First Aid, and Disaster Assistance. This means that I can be a disaster at any time, and am able to faint at the sight of blood on command. Just ask eroyd, Plantman, Dagg, bcrockcrawler, or Yellowcode3. They all have first hand experience in seeing me create disasters.

  14. Hey Curious George:

    quote:
Oh yeah, I'd like to check out your cache on Mt. Prevost. Any idea what shape the road is in?

The road is a little steep, but in good shape. Even the lowly cachecruiser makes it to the top without difficulty. The cache itself is easy, and has 3 really great views. I believe the views to be the best on the Southern Island..hmm I might even have to go with you.. icon_biggrin.gif

  15. Note to all:

I have an older relative, who watches these forums quite regularly. This person decided that I needed a new GPSr, and found the best deal to be at GPS Central for a new eTrex Legend, with the US $50 rebate. I am back in business! Another relative of mine then went to eBay, and found an eTrex Venture for Cacherunner at a sunstantially reduced price. We are now a TWO GPSr family! Isn't it funny how things work out for the best? If she had lost my Venture in May or June, I'd be hooped, instead, it was near Xmas.

Thanks for all the kind words from everyone. The relatives are watching these posts and I wanted to acknowledge them publicly here, without naming names.

Merry Christmas to all, and a Happy New Year.

PS ..eroyd...how did you get an eTrex out of the furnace repair guy anyway??

  16. Mariner's Log, Stardate 131202.8:

The knave "No Beard" is in retreat, far to the south, on a Class M planet called "Orey Gone". He is aware that starfleet forces are about to apprehend him shortly, and is in hiding. His 4th in command emailed me yesterday, to taunt me. icon_wink.gif

  17. I wanted to post a special thank you to all of you who cheered me while I was at work this evening! icon_biggrin.gif It sounded great! Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all, and may we all have many more Dagg caches to complain about in the coming year! icon_wink.gif Hey Fish, Cheers!

PS ..Kids Big, Small, and medium, you're on! Look out eroyd!
